Beautiful stories of Baja
Las bellas historias de La Baja

he most beautiful stories are often shy. It happens that
they are so obviously visible, that you look at them, but
don’t really see them. If you don’t pay attention, if you
don’t dream about the beauty, if your look is not as
calm as the sky, they might slip away from you.
This time we slowed down our tempo and spent a beautiful day
(actually two) at El Rincon, a private premier residential ocean
view community in Pedregal de Cabo San Lucas. We fell in love
with the home and the view. Whales have been passing by, ocean
breezes have been playing with our hair, while Chase and Paola
were playing on the 3rd floor terrace and Gold Retriever Luke
enjoyed sunny day. The time seemed to have stopped.
Followed by the wind and water, we found another hideaway on
the mere south of the peninsula, in Los Barriles. Our hosts moved
to this small vivid town from cold and beautiful Alaska, exchang-
ing their winter lifestyle for morning walks by the ocean, kite surf-
ing, hiking, pleasant climate, great positive energy and so much
more. They set up their home by feng shui rules, very intuitive and
with common sense. Ocean front home embraces you with ener-
getic colors and furniture brought from many winds of the world,
on the inside; and lush gardens and inviting outdoor area on the
outside. When you enter their home, you feel like at home indeed.
Do you like silver? We explored its history, which helped make the
small village of El Triunfo briefly become a capital of Baja Califor-
nia Sur in years 1828 and 1829. In our guest columns you can learn
about contemporary urban spaces, real estate market, and you
can pursue your dream home with our real estate guide that covers
whole of Baja Sur.
Together with the growth of our magazine, our Gourmet section is
growing, also. We are introducing a guide with selected restaurants

as historias más hermosas usualmente pasan desapersi-
bidas. Sucede que al ser tan obvias, uno las ve, pero real-
mente no las observa. Si uno no presta atención, si uno
no sueña con la belleza, si su vista no es calmada como el
cielo, es probable que no las perciba.
En esta ocasión bajamos nuestro ritmo y nos pasamos un hermoso
día (de hecho, dos días) en el Rincon, una comunidad privada exclu-
siva con vista al mar dentro de Pedregal de Cabo San Lucas. Nos
enamoramos de la casa y su vista. Las ballenas estuvieron pasando,
la brisa del mar se divirtió con nuestro cabello mientras que Chase y
Paola jugaban en el tercer piso y Luke, un hermoso golden retriever,
disfrutó del soleado día en la terraza. El tiempo simplemente pareció
detenerse.
Seguido del viento y el agua, encontramos otro escondite en el sur
de la península, en Los Barriles. Nuestros anfitriones se mudaron de
la fria Alaska, a éste pequeño y vívido pueblo, e intercambiaron su
estilo de vida invernal por caminatas cerca del mar, kite surfing, un
agradable clima, una excelente actitud positiva y mucho más. Se
basaron en los principios del Feng Shui para establecer su hogar de
forma intuitiva y con sentido común. Este hogar con frente de playa
te recibe en su interior con colores energéticos y muebles traídos de
varias partes del mundo, mientras que en exterior te acoge con jar-
dines lozanos. Cuando uno entra a ésta casa, realmente se siente
como en su propia casa.
¿También le gusta la plata? Exploramos la historia de éste lustroso
material y encontramos que convirtió al pequeño pueblo de El Triunfo
como la capital de Baja California Sur en 1828 y 1829. En la columna del

Upon entering El Rincon’s model home Villa Cantamar, the ocean
welcomes you already through the main glass door. Main level is
actually a range of spaces, which together combine a great living
area, but function perfectly also individually. First foyer – straight
and right a living area with salt water aquarium – spacious kitchen
with top appliances and an isle which continues to the dining
room - terrace that verges through the whole length of the main

ballenas, a pescadores a la orilla de la playa o hermosos cruceros
dirigiéndose a otro destino. Si se cierran, separan la terraza y brin-
dan privacidad e individualidad a las áreas.

he ceramic plate at the entrance of this burgundy home wel-
comes you with a toast “Roinische”, a composition of two Gaelic
words, meaning “share water”, and giving a warm welcome to
every guest. Active life by the ocean, rich and colorful waters
of the Sea of Cortez, friendly town and relaxing environment
brought Betsy and Kevin from cold but beautiful Alaska to this piece of land
south of the border, under the sun.
The story goes back to 1994, when Betsy and Kevin discovered a calm bay
with beautiful sunrises and merlot sunsets. This was the place they chose to
build their future home at. Previously non-inhabited area, the bay was named
after Kevin’s origins, Bahia de Irlanda, or Irish Bay. Now, Bahia de Irlanda has
become a small friendly neighborhood, located on the coast road to Punta
Pescadero, with beautiful ocean front homes, each offering calm refuge to
their dwellers.

da la bienvenida con un brindis “Roinische”, una composición de
dos palabras gaélicas las cuales significan “compartir agua”. Una
activa vida al lado del océano, las pintorescas aguas del Mar de
Cortés, un amigable pueblo y ambiente relajado es lo que trajo
a Betsy y Kevin de la fría y hermosa Alaska, a este lugar al sur de la frontera,
bajo el sol.
La historia se remonta a 1994, cuando Betsy y Kevin descubrieron una tran-
quila bahía con hermosos amaneceres y atardeceres color merlot. Este fue
el lugar en el que decidieron construir su futuro hogar. Previamente un área
sin habitar, la bahía fue llamada en honor a los orígenes de Kevin, Bahía de
Irlanda. Ahora, la bahía se ha convertido en un agradable vecindario en la
costa en el camino a Punta Pescadero, con hermosos hogares frente a la
playa, ofreciendo un refugio para sus dueños.

 Our hosts built their home from scratch. When imagining their
future home, they wanted a healthy house, the one which will take
the advantage of everything that nature had to offer. It was there-
fore natural that they designed it by feng shui rules; somewhat by
the book, but mostly following their own intuition and common
sense. And although it sounds more complicated than that, that’s
what feng shui is all about.
When you enter their home, everything seems to be in place,
organic and natural. Lush gardens lead you to the heart of this col-
orful home, full of energy and good spirits. Dog Keno welcomes you
wagging the tail curiously, while cats faithfully execute their tasks;
the head of the cat crowd Max will check you up by slowly opening
her right eye and appearing to care less about your presence, but
thanking you with gentle purr if you pet her; playful and youngest
Pepperoni will be watching your step from under the chair and will
approach only for play; and Rika – you will see her white coat and
cat-ish appearance only when the clock ticks the feeding time.
Literally, the word feng shui means “wind” and “water”. Like wind
and water, it involves movement and circulation of the energy
(ch’i) through the home (or environment) so that its movement

Cuando imaginaban su futura casa, soñaban con una casa salu-
dable, la cual tomara ventaja de todo lo que la naturaleza puede
ofrecerle. Fue por ello que de forma natural diseñaron su propie-
dad acorde a los principios del feng shui, algunos tomados del
libro, pero en su gran mayoría, siguiendo su intuición y sentido
común, ya que de eso se trata el feng shui, aunque suene mucho
más complicado que ello.
Cuando uno entra, todo parece estar en su lugar, orgánico y natural.
Jardines floridos los guían al corazón de este colorido hogar lleno
de energía y buenos espíritus. El perro Keno los recibe agitando
curiosamente su cola, mientras que los gatos fielmente ejecutan
su tarea: la mayor, Max, lo revisará al abrir muy lentamente su
ojo derecho con un sentimiento de desenfado, pero se mostrará
agradecida y ronroneará cuando uno la acaricia; el juguetón de
Pepperoni lo estará observando por debajo de la silla y se acercará
para jugar mientras que a Rika, sólo podrá admirar su blancura
cuando el reloj marque la hora del almuerzo.
Literalmente, la palabra feng shui significa “viento” y “agua”. Como
viento y agua, eso implica movimiento y circulación de energía

 resembles a gently flowing stream or a pleasant breeze. Betsy
designed their home where ch’i flows freely from an octagonal
spacious room with dining area, living area and kitchen to other
spaces in the inside and connects them with the outside area.
In order to enable the energy to flow, the Roinische home incorpo-
rates round corners and octagonal spaces. The house is oriented
in a way to accommodate the local winds. An angled roof and
windows on all sides mean that the house brings cool breezes
through one end and out the other. Air-conditioning is used only
seldom in this home.
When creating their home, Betsy paid special attention to col-
ors, which play an important role in feng shui. They help enrich
every area of our lives, aesthetically, psychologically and physi-
cally. Yellow is representative to the sun and its life-giving warmth.
It encourages feelings of optimism and cheerfulness, which you
will find plenty in the main room. Kitchen is colored in red, a color
of luck, strength, activity, passion and positive energy. Green, the
color of plants and associated with growth is a calming color. Betsy
used it in an alternative dining room, office and game room. Main
bedroom is dressed in purple, a color which by many cultures is

su hogar para que el ch’i fluyera libremente de un área espaciosa
octagonal con comedor, sala y cocina, a otras áreas interiores y
que los conectara con el área exterior.
Para que la energía fluya, el hogar Roinische incorpora esquinas
circulares y espacios octagonales. La casa está orientada de forma
que acomode los vientos locales. El techo en cierto ángulo y las
ventanas en todos los lados significan que la casa atrae una fresca
brisa a través de un extremo y fluye y sale a través de otro lado. El
aire acondicionado rara vez se utiliza en éste hogar.
Cuando creaba su hogar, Betsy puso mucha atención y cuidado a
los colores, los cuales juegan un importante papel en el feng shui.
Los colores permiten enriquecer cada aspecto de la vida estética-
mente, psicológicamente y físicamente. El amarillo representa
al sol y la calidez con la que da vida, motiva los sentimientos de
optimismo y alegría, los cuales encontrará en el salón principal. La
cocina está pintada de rojo, un color de suerte, fuerza, actividad,
pasión y energía positiva. Verde, el color de las plantas y asociado
con el crecimiento, es un color relajante. Betsy lo utilizó en un

 considered a royal color, reserved for the wealthy and powerful.
In China purple is considered to be a fortunate color – some say
even luckier than red.
Furniture in Betsy and Kevin’s home seems a mosaic of old and new,
of origins and traditions, of different cultures, habits and events,
brought together from many winds. You will find pieces of furni-
ture brought from Alaska, where Betsy and Kevin lived for 28 years,
some inherited from great grand father, grand mother and parents,
others brought from mainland Mexico, and some handcrafted with
indigenous and local artisans. Terrace boasts with a compass point-
ing the sides of the sky; under the palapa you will find a Celtic nod,
a reminder of their roots. Betsy will proudly show you some great
pieces of famous Corning glass, and her collection of glassware
inherited from her mom, grandma and great great aunt.
Big open spaces, great energy flow, colors that boost your mood
in every space, inside and outside decoration and lush gardens
make the Roinische residence a very pleasant retreat. The home
is strategically located next to the ocean; the mornings invite you
for long walks, day ocean breezes offer diving and kite sailing trips,
and at nights the sound of the waves lulls you to sleep. And as our
hosts would say: it cannot get better than that!

Se encontrarán muebles traídos de Alaska, donde Betsy y Kevin
vivieron por 28 años, algunos heredados de sus antepasados,
otros traídos desde México y otros más hechos a mano por artis-
tas locales. La terraza ofrece una brújula apuntando los lados del
cielo; debajo de la palapa, encontrará un nudo céltico como recor-
datorio de sus raíces. Betsy orgullosamente le mostrará algunas
piezas de vidrio de la ciudad de Corning, y la colección de vasos
heredados de su mamá, abuela y tátara tía.
Grandes espacios abiertos, gran flujo de energía, colores que
motivan los sentimientos en todos los lugares, decoración interna
y externa, y los jardines floridos, que hacen que la residencia Roin-
ische sea un retiro muy agradable. El hogar esta estratégicamente
ubicado junto al mar; las mañanas lo llaman a tomar paseos por la
playa, las brisas marinas lo incitan a bucear o practicar el kite sail-

ry to describe Mexico in five words. If you ask a Mexican,
the answer would probably be something like “colors,
flavor, history, people, traditions”, but if you ask the same
question to a visitor on Baja streets, you might hear
something like“beach,party,tequila,tacos,silver”.Mexico
has many faces, flavors and treasures. In each town or Mexican state
you can find different most representative characteristics. But one
of them, common to the whole country, is silver.
Mexico has been commercializing silver on and off ever since the
country was discovered by Cortes in 1521. Between 1600 and
1800, Bolivia, Peru and Mexico grew to produce about 85% of the
world’s silver production. With the War of Independency in Mexi-
co, many Spanish barons destroyed their mines before they were
taken by the revolutionaries.
Afterwards, the ancient art of silver was forgotten for a while. It was
brought back by Mr. William Spratling in the late 1920’s when he
arrived to Taxco, a charming colonial city with cobblestone streets
and red tiled rooftops in the state of Guerrero, to study Mexico
and its culture. He visualized the potential of silver and saw the tal-
ent of local artisans, motivating them to develop their skills. Their
creations and quality of work was soon noticed around the world,
making Taxco the most renowned producer of silver in Mexico,
widely known also as Mexico’s “Silver city”. In 1953, to honor the
silver artisans, Mexico’s president declared the last weekend in
November as National Silver Day. Today, Mexico is one of the top
five producers of silver in the world; much of it comes from famous
mining districts in Zacatecas, Durango, Guerrero and others.

pregunta a un mexicano las posibles
respuestas serían “colores, sabores, his-
toria, gente, tradiciones”. Pero si le pre-
gunta a un visitante en las calles de Baja,
es posible que escuche algo como “playa, fiesta, tequila,
tacos, plata”. México tiene muchas caras, sabores y tesoros.
En cada pueblo o estado mexicano puede encontrar dife-
rentes características representativas de cada lugar. Pero una
de éstas características, común en todo el país, es la plata.
México ha comercializado la plata desde que el país fue
descubierto por Cortés en 1521. Entre 1600 y 1800, Bolivia,
Perú y México llegaron a producir cerca del 85% del total de la
producción mundial de plata. Con la guerra de independencia en
México, muchos Barones españoles destruyeron sus minas antes
de que fueran arrebatadas por los revolucionarios.
Después de ello, el antiguo arte de la platería fue olvidado y no fué
sino hasta finales del los 1920’s, que el Sr. William Spratling llegó
a estudiar México y se establece en Taxco, una pequeña y encan-
tadora ciudad colonial con calles empedradas y techos de tejas
rojas en el estado de Guerrero. El visualizó el potencial de la plata y
vio el talento de artesanos locales, los motivó para desarrollar sus
habilidades y a enseñarles a los jóvenes sobre la belleza del arte
de trabajar con la plata. Sus creaciones y la calidad de su trabajo
fue reconocido alrededor del mundo, haciendo de Taxco (también
conocida como la ciudad de plata), la cuidad productora de plata
más importante en todo México. En 1953, para honrar a los arte-
sanos mexicanos, el presidente de México declaro que el último
fin de semana de noviembre fuera la Feria Nacional de la Plata.
Actualmente, México es uno de los primeros cinco productores de
plata en el mundo; mucho de ello proviene de los famosos distri-
tos mineros de Zacatecas, Durango, Guerrero, entre otros.
También la Baja, donde se puede encontrar muchas tiendas que
ofrecen bellas piezas de plata, se ofrece una historia de explo-
tación minera. Las minas de plata cerca de San Antonio fueron
trabajadas en 1784, y el auge en B.C.S. sucedió entre 1850 y 1890.
La mina mas productora de éste metal era llamada El Triunfo de la
Cruz, dando pie al nacimiento del pueblo minero de El Triunfo. La
plata era entonces tan atractiva que trajo al sur de Baja muchos
trabajadores, los cuales en pocos años, fundaron una ciudad con
una población de 10,000 habitantes. El Triunfo fue entonces la
ciudad más grande en el sur de le peninsula y brevemente sirvió
como la capital de Baja California Sur en 1828 y 1829.
Gradualmente, la calidad de la excavación declinó. En 1918 el
huracán inundó la mina, y aunque se trató de rescatar su operación,

Also in Baja, where you can find many beautiful and inviting sil-
ver jewelry stores, we boast with history of silver mining. The silver
mines near San Antonio were worked in 1784, and the Baja Califor-
nia Sur boom happened from 1850 to 1890. The most productive
silver mine was called El Triunfo de la Cruz, giving the birth to a
mining town of El Triunfo. The silver in fact was so attractive that
it brought to the south of Baja many workers, which within a few
years formulated a city with a population of 10,000. El Triunfo was
then the largest city in the south and briefly served as the capital
of Baja California Sur in 1828 and 1829.
Gradually, the quality of the dig declined. In 1918 the hurricane
flooded the mine, there were tries to resurrect the operation, but
it was finally abandoned in 1926. If you would like to explore more,
visit San Antonio and El Triunfo. The ruins of the silver mine are
still there. A huge round brick chimney jutting into the Baja sky, a
reminder of the once importance of this now small village.
Since ancient times, silver has played an important role in human
culture throughout the centuries: used as a currency first by some
western Asian cultures, believed to have beneficial healing and
anti-disease properties by Hippocrates, some silver compounds
were used to prevent infection in World War I before the use of
antibiotics, and so much more.
New applications for silver are being explored in areas such
as water purification and solar energy. With new technologies
emerging, it will come as no surprise the use of this valuable metal
will expand in the future.

fundiéndose en el cielo de Baja, cual vestigio de la importancia
que una vez tuvo ese pequeño pueblo.
Usada desde tiempos antiguos, la plata ha jugado un importante
papel en la cultura de la humanidad a través de los siglos: fue usada
como moneda por algunas culturas del este de Asia, Hipócrates
creía que la plata tiene propiedades benéficas y curativas, algunos
compuestos con plata fueron utilizados para prevenir infecciones
durante la Primera Guerra Mundial antes del uso de antibióticos,
entre otros usos más.
Nuevas aplicaciones de la plata están siendo exploradas en áreas
como la purificación del agua y la energía solar. Con las nuevas
tecnologías emergentes, no será una sorpresa que el uso de éste
metal se expanda en el futuro.

for the seal “925”. In Mexican silver you will most of the times find
another seal “Mexico” or “Mex”; and some jewelers mark their jew-
elry with their seal too.
To care for your silver, store the unworn silver jewelry in a sealed
bag, so as not to tarnish. A silver cleaner and soft cloth will easily
remove any tarnish, and small chains can be shined using dry bak-
ing soda and a toothbrush.

n previous edition of Escapes we introduced social respon-
sibility theme and presented two institutions, which show
how good deeds of companies and individuals play impor-
tant role in the growth and development of our community.
You have learned about Colegio El Camino and Galento
Foundation. There are several social responsibility organizations
in Baja, but this time we’d like to pay special attention to the
Humane Society, a non-profit organization from Cabo San Lucas,
which started in 1991 and have successfully managed to make a
difference in the field of animal care through all these years.
Immanuel Kant said “We can judge the heart of a man by his treat-
ment of animals.” It is true that a responsible and successful society
is the one who takes care of its children, young ones, elderly and
also, of its animals. Pet and animal care culture allows the human
being to grow and give children the opportunity to develop in a
harmonious and respectful nation.

E
n previas ediciones de Escapes introducimos el tema
de responsabilidad social y presentamos dos institu-
ciones, las cuales muestran cómo es que las buenas
acciones de empresas e individuos juegan un impor-
tante papel en el crecimiento y desarrollo de nuestra
comunidad. Brindamos información sobre Colegio El Camino y
Fundación Galento. Hay muchas más organizaciones socialmente
responsables en Baja, pero en esta ocasión queremos brindarle
nuestra atención a La Sociedad de Animales (Humane Society),
una organización no lucrativa de Cabo San Lucas, la cual comenzó
en 1991 y a través de los años, ha logrado de forma exitosa hacer
la diferencia en el campo del cuidado de los animales.
Immanuel Kant dijo “Podemos juzgar el corazón de un hombre
dependiendo de cómo trata a los animales”. Es verdad que una
sociedad responsable y exitosa es aquella que se ocupa de sus
niños, jóvenes, adultos y también de sus animales. La cultura del
cuidado de las mascotas y animales permite que el ser humano
crezca y se desarrolle en un ambiente en armonía con sus seme-
jantes.
La Sociedad de Animales de Cabo San Lucas es una organización
no lucrativa que tiene como objetivo principal el ayudar a perros
y gatos enfermos y sin hogar que andan sueltos en Cabo para que
así, puedan ser atendidos, cuidados y adoptados por una nueva
familia. El hacerlo, evita que éstos anden por las calles y que se
conviertan en un foco de infección para todos. Esta organización
comenzó en 1991, cuando un grupo de personas decidieron hacer
algo en relación a todos aquellos animales callejeros. En 1997, la
familia Ceseña donó un terreno y gracias a la ayuda de locales

Humane Society’s main objective is to promote the humane treat-
ment of stray animals through education, pet population control,
rescue and adoption. They first started in 1991, when a group of
people decided to do something regarding all the animals on the
streets. In 1997, the Ceseña family donated land and with the help
of local people and tourists, a shelter was built in 1998. It was then
when a program was established in which stray animals are rescued,
spayed or neutered and adopted by loving people. Because of this
program, hundreds of animals have found a home in the Los Cabos
area, and even outside Mexico; several families from the United
States and Canada have adopted a cat or a dog into their homes.
The Humane Society is dedicated to inform and educate about
animal pet control to everyone, so from a young age people learn
to respect, attend and love them. Everyone can support this admi-
rable work one way or another by donating money, through pro-
motion or by being a volunteer at the shelter. Over the past ten
years, the shelter has grown to reach the low income families by
visiting their neighborhoods and educating people on the ben-
efits of spaying and neutering their dogs and cats. Their involve-
ment serves as an educational tool to raise the community’s
awareness of the humane treatment to all animals and to prevent
the births of unwanted puppies and kittens.
If you know of an animal that needs immediate care, you can call
the shelter and they will help any way they can. If you want to
know more about the different ways you can help and get help by
the Humane Society of Cabo San Lucas, or if you are looking for a
loving pet to adopt, visit the shelter knowing that you are contrib-
uting to a good humanitarian cause.

Fue ahí cuando se estableció un programa en el cual se cuida,
atiende, esteriliza, vacuna y entrega en adopción a saludables y
felices gatos y perros. Hoy en día, este programa ha beneficiado
a cientos de mascotas, las cuales han encontrado un hogar fuera
y dentro de Cabo San Lucas, ya que el mismo programa permite
que familias extranjeras adopten a un perro o gato.
Humane Society está comprometido a educar sobre el cuidado
consiente hacia éstos animales, buscando que desde pequeños,
los niños aprendan a respetar, atender y amar a los animales. Todos
podemos apoyar de una u otra forma esta noble labor a través de
donativos monetarios o en especie, o fungiendo como voluntarios.
Poco más de diez años después de su establecimiento, el albergue
está llegando a las colonias populares para continuar con la edu-
cación sobre la importancia de las vacunas y esterilización de las
mascotas. El programa permite que las personas de bajos recursos
paguen una cantidad significativa por la atención a su mascota,
propagando con ello el cuidado de éstos animales.
Si se encuentra algún animal que necesite cuidado, puede hablar
para reportarlo y alguien se encargará de buscarlo y darle las
atenciones necesarias. Y si desea conocer más sobre las diferentes
formas en que puede ayudar y ser ayudado por La Sociedad de
Animales de Cabo San Lucas, o si esta en busca de una mascota
que adoptar, puede acudir al albergue con la certeza de que está
apoyando a una buena causa.

uring the XX century, cities were thought as a clear
organizational scheme, with a simple and predictable
order, capable to be designed and planned in such
way that the life quality of its residents could be
modified manipulating the physical shape of the
city. The result was a tragic social engineering effort, fueled by a
scientific method in the form of urban planning that have domi-
nated western societies the last 60 years, and now, unfortunately,
the developing world. Urban systems everywhere are just way to
complex to be reduced to what conventional science can focus on.
The Contemporary city is the amalgam of invisible fluxes and vis-
ible materializations of information that operate simultaneously
in spaces of global nature as also in spaces of local nature. To rec-
ognize these forces, fluxes and potentials is the challenge of any
contemporary urban design or planning.
In September 2008, at Dalian China, the 44th International Con-
gress of Urbanists took place. The main subject was “Urban Growth
Without Sprawl”, one of the fundamental problems of urbanism
these days together with the indiscriminated territorial expan-
sion and the occupation of natural reserved areas, which destroys
important natural resources and the lack of long-term projects for
population distribution.
We will mention 2 out of the 7 Mexican projects presented:
The project for the Development of Playa del Carmen, in Quin-
tana Roo, takes as starting point the concepts of City and Region
generating identity at different scales: neighborhoods, parks and
dwellings with simple solutions and integrating low-cost innova-
tive construction systems, using local materials and workers as also
eco-technologies and integration of the infrastructures with public
spaces. Makes also emphasis in pedestrian mobility, the different
areas of the plan are not more than 5 minutes far from each other,
the urban development enhancing social interaction.
The STRATEGIC PLAN FOR URBAN DEVELOPMENT 2030 for Cancun
(awarded with the Excellence In Urban Planning prize in the same
congress) where It’s key aspects are the master plan for the Hotel
Corridor as the integration of irregular housing to the territorial

urante el s. XX, las ciudades se plantearon como un
esquema organizativo claro, con un orden simple y
predecible, capaces de ser diseñadas y planificadas
de tal manera que la calidad de vida de sus residen-
tes podía ser mejorada manipulando la forma física
de la ciudad. El resultado fue un absurdo esfuerzo de ingeniería
social, auxiliado de un método científico como lo es el planea-
miento urbano que ha dominado las sociedades occidentales los
últimos 60 años y ahora, desgraciadamente, el mundo en vías de
desarrollo. Los sistemas urbanos, son demasiado complejos para
ser reducidos a los que sustenta la ciencia convencional.
La ciudad contemporánea es la amalgama de flujos invisibles
y materializaciones visibles de información que operan simul-
táneamente en espacios de naturaleza global así como de natura-
leza local, reconocer estas fuerzas, flujos, y potencial, es el reto de
cualquier diseño o planeamiento urbano contemporáneo.
Durante septiembre del 2008, en Dalian, China, tuvo lugar el 44
Congreso Internacional de Urbanistas. Con el tema principal:
“Crecimiento Urbano sin Extension”, uno de los problemas
fundamentales del urbanismo actual junto con la indiscriminada
expansion urbana y la ocupación de áreas naturales reservadas, que
destruyen importantes recursos naturales y la falta de proyectos a
largo plazo para la distribución de la población.
Mencionaremos 2 de los 7 proyectos Mexicanos presentados en
este evento: El proyecto para el desarrollo de Playa del Carmen,
Q. R., el cual toma como punto de partida los conceptos de Ciudad
y Region, generando identidad a diferentes escalas: barrios, parques,
habitacion, etc., con soluciones simples integrando sistemas
constructivos inovadores, materiales y mano de obra local asi como
eco-tecnologias, y la integracion de estas infraestructuras con los
espacios públicos. Hace énfasis en la mobilidad peatonal, las dife-
rentes areas del plan estan a no mas de 5 minutos unas de otras, el
desarrollo urbano motivando la interacción y los vinculos sociales.
El plan Estrategico de Desarrollo Urbano del 2030 para Cancún
(se le otorgó el premio a la excelencia en el planeamiento urbano
dentro del mismo congreso) tiene en sus principales aspectos la

reserves for year 2030. Including the revitalization of downtown
and its connection with the hotel corridor, also contemplates to
improve the traffic infrastructure as public transport system and
the integration of bicycle paths. On the environmental side it aims
to protect the wells and the generation of lineal parks to communi-
cate the city, once again the public space as city articulator.
This are just the beginnings of new futures, the development of
new urban strategies will deliver better and more efficient urban
areas, specially for those like us who live in a coastal setting with
specific situations and agents that are not macro-scale settings like
Mexico City or New York. Its convenient to mention the emergence
of young new groups of study about Coastal Cities, academic insti-
tutions like the IaaC (Barcelona), the Intelligent Coast group (Spain)
and the SUPERSUDACA collective (Latin America) are among the
research groups in sustainable urban development for tourism-
based areas.
In our own very area of Los Cabos the young CAPA collective
(formed by 3 young offices of Los Cabos with international cre-
dentials) has been studying new alternatives for the sustainable
development of our Baja territory, will be hearing more of them
soon and hopefully in this column we will be able to show you
some of their work.
Most of this proposals are still theoretical, but they are a huge
resource of ideas for what the future of the human settlements
and territories can become. Urban strategies should always think
ahead the administrative territorial capacities, it has become
urgent to implement strategies for economical and social devel-
opment, unfortunately, most of times there’s no effective political
and legal frame for the management of the urban settlements
and its resources (natural, economical, social, etc); Today’s territo-
rial management should be based in collaborative and relational
processes which wont compete but complement each other. The
coordination of local governments, social participation, the view of
a common project, and the efficient instrumentation is basic for
the successful development of proposals.
The difference between socioeconomic layers in the area makes
all of this even harder to manage, most of urban strategies and
plans fails for the lack of proper management and not because of
a wrong planning. A good planning without proper management
becomes “plain good ideas”. And good management without good
planning only generates wrong realities.

Estas propuestas son solo el principio de nuevos futuros, el
desarrollo de estraegias urbanas generaran mejores ciudades y mas

o Nueva York. Cabe mencionar, el surgimiento de nuevos grupos
de estudio sobre las Ciudades de Costa, instituciones academicas
como el IaaC (Barcelona), el grupo Intelligent Coast (España) y
el colectivo SUPERSUDACA (Latinoamerica) son algunos de los
grupos de investigacion urbana para el desarrollo sustentable de
las areas costeras basadas en turismo.
En nuestra propia area de Los Cabos, el colectivo CAPA (formado
por 3 jovenes oficinas de Los Cabos con experiencia internacio-
nal) ha estado estudiando y generando nuevas alternativas para el
desarrollo sustentable de nuestro territorio sudcaliforniano, espe-
ramos escuchar mas de ellos en un futuro proximo y mostrarles, en
esta misma columna, algo del trabajo de este colectivo.
La mayoria de estas propuestas son aun teoricas, pero son una
fuente de ideas sobre el futuro de los territories y asentamientos
humanos. Las estrategias urbanas deben pensar siempre más
allá de las capacidades administrativas territoriales, se ha vuelto
primordial la implementacion de estrategias para el desarrollo
tanto social como económico, desafortundamente, la mayor parte
de las ocasiones no se cuenta con un marco político y legal para
la correcta administración de los asentamientos urbanos y sus
recursos (naturales, economicos, sociales, etc); La administración
territorial actual debe basarse en procesos relacionales y de
colaboración, los cuales se complementen en vez de competir.
La coordinacion de los gobiernos locales, la paticipacion social, la
vision de un proyecto común, y la eficiente instrumentación son
base para el exitoso desarrollo de nuevas propuestas.
La marcada diferencia entre estratos socioeconomicos en el area,
hace todo esto aún más dificil de manejar, la mayoria de las fallas
en planeamiento y estrategias se deben a la falta de administracion
y manejo adecuado más que por haber sido malos planteamientos.
Una buena planificación sin una adecuada administración se vuelve
solamente “buenas ideas”. Así como una buena administración sin
un buen planeamiento de desarrollo solo genera malas realidades.

t’s not just about the market, it’s also about the state of
mind. For several months already we are reading and listen-
ing about the so called global economic crisis. It is true, chal-
lenging times have come. On the other hand, we eagerly
read experts opinions and their predictions for better times,
we read analyses of previous crises and try to imply the lessons
learned to today’s conditions.
And although here in Baja we were able to avoid the crisis bubble
for a long period of time, we now also feel the effects of the hap-
penings in the world. But, as the saying goes “good fortunes have
been made in bad times”; these times give us an opportunity to
build firm bases of our business and future. When trying to navi-
gate this downturn, we find some real estate companies closing
their doors, and our client’s properties longer time on the market.
But, buyers are still out there, searching to get the very best deal,
and developers on the other hand are eager to sell. I see develop-
ers become more flexible, offering their own financing, with fixed
interest rates, and other solutions to serve best a cautious client.
In Grupo Riveras, formed by a group of real estate companies
like high-end residential communities Pedregal in Cabo and La

de nuestro negocio y nuestro futuro. Cuando tratamos de navegar en
estos tiempos, encontramos a varias empresas inmobiliarias cerrando
oficinas, y propiedades que duran mayor tiempo en el mercado. Aún
así, los compradores están ahí afuera, buscando encontrar la mejor
propuesta, mientras que los desarrolladores buscan vender. Veo que
los desarrolladores se vuelven más flexibles, ofrecen financiamiento
con tasas de interés fijas y algunas otras propuestas para servir mejor
a sus prudentes clientes.

Peruan, but raised in Japanese tradition, he studied
in acclaimed French culinary school Le Cordon Bleu

and Cuba. Now we finally got him to Mexico, Cabo San Lucas. Fer-
nando Soeda Takeuchi is the chef of Asian restaurant Bohai, the
only restaurant which under one roof offers food from 7 Asian
countries: Japan, China, Vietnam, Singapore, Thailand, Burma and

talentoso chef, el cual llegó a Baja California Sur hace
ya casi un año. De origen Peruano, pero educado en las
tradiciones japonesas, estudió en la aclamada escuela
culinaria francesa Le Cordeon Bleu en Canadá, y perfeccionó sus
habilidades desde los 14 años en Perú, Canadá, Estados Unidos y
Cuba. Ahora, finalmente lo tenemos en México, Cabo San Lucas.
Fernando Soeda Takeuchi es el chef del restaurant Asiático Bohai,
el único restaurant que ofrece sabores y platillos de 7 países
Asiáticos: Japón, China, Vietnam, Singapur, Tailandia, Birmania y
Camboya. Con sus frescas y originales ideas, Fernando renovó el
menú de Bohai, trayendo recetas originales llenas de sabor para

 Tuna tartare
200 gr. fresh tuna
25 gr. finely chopped garlic
30 gr. white onion
15 gr. finely chopped ginger
5 gr. masago
5 ml. sesame seed oil

Sauce:
1/2 oz. japanese plum licor
1 gr. wasabi
15 ml. soy sauce
1 gr. hondashi
55 ml. water

Mix together chopped tuna, garlic, onion

and the ginger. Add sesame seed oil, salt and
pepper to taste. Incorporate well without
overdoing it and preserve in the fridge.
In a mixing bowl, combine all the sauce
ingredients and leave aside.
To serve, put a previously greased metal ring
in a deep plate and put the tuna mix inside.
Slowly, remove the metal ring and add the
sauce to the dish and around the tartar. You
can decorate with masago and chives.

200 gr. atún fresco
25 gr. ajo picado
30 gr. cebolla blanca
15 gr. jengibre picado
5 gr. masago
5 ml. aceite de ajonjolí

Salsa:
1/2 oz. licor de ciruela Japonés
1 gr. wasabi
15 ml. salsa de soya
1 gr. hondashi
55 ml. agua

Mezclar en un recipiente el atún picado, ajo,

cebolla y jengibre. Agregar el aceite de ajon-
jolí, sal y pimienta. Mezclar bien y reservar en
el refrigerador.
En un recipiente aparte, mezclar todos los
ingredientes de la salsa.
En un plato hondo colocar un molde de aro
previamente engrasado y en su interior colo-

aja California Sur is a place you can easily fall in love
with. Beautiful nature, dreamlike weather, plentiful of
activities, friendly people and so much more. Many
people come here to vacation, and many of them
return here to stay. Connie Worth’s love story with
Baja started when she was 17. She came to vacation to Cabo San
Lucas with her three girlfriends. It was 1988, when Cabo was still a
small fisherman town with only 4 hotels. Connie felt in love with
the place, which kept pulling her back. This year she is counting
ten years living and enjoying Baja full time with her family.
Connie was born and raised in Vancouver, Canada, in an Italian
neighborhood. Having been raised in a city, the theatre and arts,
cuisine, and of course hockey are in her blood. In Cabo she enjoys
whale watching, snorkeling, swimming, boogie boarding, read-
ing, camping, taking photographs, and exploring the surrounding
areas such as Los Barriles, Todo Santos, La Paz, Santiago, and Mira-
flores. “The beauty that can be found by simply taking an off road
towards the mountains or the sea truly amazes me. Every now and
then you encounter some charming little town that you wouldn’t
imagine could be there. I really enjoy life here,” she adds.

What does your weekend look like?
Saturdays have become our family day and my fondest memories
and favorite weekend pastimes are at the secluded beaches along
the Pacific and East Cape. I remember to embrace the elements
wherever I am. Swimming in the ocean, watching the whales’
breach, soaking in the hot springs in Santiago, collecting shells
etc., are things that allow me to stay connected with myself, my
family, and nature.
How did you get started in the real estate business?
The real reason why I got into real estate is for the flexibility. When
I received news 6 years ago that I was going to be a Mother, my
world had to change from structured to flexible so that I could
enjoy those precious moments with my daughter. My background
has been in Human resources, I have always enjoyed working with
people so Real Estate seemed like a natural fit. I completed the
Real Estate course and after learning about the various compa-
nies here, it was apparent that Coldwell Banker Riveras would be
the best choice. What I like most about the company is that it’s a
hands on family run business and it is an extremely vibrant com-
pany. And, my clients are amazing! Each person has a story to tell
and a reason why they want a piece of Cabo. The opportunity to
assist people with their lifestyle plans is very rewarding.
This year you were praised with CB Riveras Award as a Top
producer for their San Jose Office. Can you tell me what this
means to you and how do you see current market conditions?
Winning this award is very special to me and I am thankful to my
clients for the opportunity to earn their business and to remain
confident with my abilities. In today’s market, property owners are
more willing to entertain offers, and that is good news for buyers
who are in a position to capitalize on these opportunities. Nobody
knows how things will develop, however history shows us that
real estate is the safest and most profitable investment. Los Cabos
is a hot spot and will always be a desirable location. There are
many reasons why the best time is now, and why people should
not deny themselves their lifestyle or investment goals and, and
wait until we reach another boom.
Who was the biggest contributor to your success?
I owe much of my success to my Mother. She always trusted my
decisions and encouraged me to believe in myself. I learned to
excel and adapt to any given situation and handle any challenges
that come my way with tact, self discipline, and a positive attitude.
This might be also the reason that I somehow always manage to
find the most incredible clients to work with! I look forward to the
future, meeting new people in Baja, and continuing my career.

aja California Sur es un lugar del cual fácilmente te
puedes enamorar. Hermosa naturaleza, clima soñado,
una gran variedad de actividades, gente amigable y
mucho más. Muchas personas viene de vacaciones, y
muchas de ellas regresan para quedarse. La historia
de amor de Connie Worth con Baja empezó cuando tenía 17 años.
Vino a Cabo de vacaciones con 3 amigas. Fue en 1988, cuando
Cabo todavía era un pequeño pueblo pesquero con tan sólo 4
hoteles. Connie sentía la atracción a este lugar y la empujaba a
quedarse. Este año ella cuenta como el décimo año el cual está
viviendo aquí con su familia.
Connie nació y creció en Vancouver, Canadá, en un fraccionamiento
italiano. Habiendo nacido en una ciudad, el teatro, las artes, la
cocina y desde luego el hockey corren por sus venas. En Cabo
ella disfruta ver la migración de las ballenas, nadar, leer, acampar,
tomar fotografías y explorar las áreas circunvecinas como Los
Barriles, Todos Santos, La Paz, Santiago y Miraflores. “La belleza
que puede ser encontrada al simplemente tomar una vereda a la
montaña me sorprende. De vez en cuando te encuentras con unos
pueblitos que jamás imaginaste estarían ahí. Realmente disfruto la
vida aquí,” agrega.
¿Cómo es tu fin de semana?
Los sábados se han convertido en nuestro día familiar y mis más
queridos recuerdos y pasatiempos favoritos son en pequeñas pla-
yas a lo largo del Pacífico y en Cabo del Este. Para mantenerme
saludable, recuerdo tomar los elementos de la naturaleza en
donde me encuentre. Nadar en el mar, observar las ballenas, dis-
frutar las aguas termales de Santiago, coleccionar conchas en la
playa, etc. En fin, todo aquello que me permita estar conectada
conmigo misma, con mi familia y la naturaleza.
¿Cómo comenzaste en el mundo de los bienes raíces?
La verdadera razón por la cual me metí a esto fue por la flexibi-
lidad. Hace 6 años, cuando recibí la noticia de que iba ser mamá,
mi mundo tuvo que cambiar de estructurado a flexible de forma
que pudiera disfrutar esos preciosos momentos con mi hija. Mi

experiencia ha sido en recursos humanos, siempre he disfrutado
trabajar con las personas, por lo que intuí que los bienes raíces
serían una buena opción. Completé el curso y después de ver las
diferentes empresas inmobiliarias en la región, era aparente que
Coldwell Banker Riveras era la mejor opción a tomar. Lo que más
me gusta de la empresa es esta dirigida por una familia y que es
siempre muy activa. Además, ¡Mis clientes son sorprendentes!
Cada uno tiene una historia que contar, sobretodo del porque
desean estar en Cabo. Es muy gratificante el ayudar a las personas
con sus planes de vida.
Este año fuiste premiada como el agente con mayor producción
de Coldwell Banker Riveras en su oficina de San Jose. ¿Que
significa eso para ti y cómo ves el mercado actual?
Ganar éste premio es muy especial para mí y estoy agradecida
con todos mis clientes por la oportunidad de representarlos y
perfeccionar mis habilidades. En el mercado actual, los dueños
de las propiedades estás más dispuestos a recibir ofertas, lo cual
es una buena noticia para los compradores, los cuales están en
posición de capitalizar esas oportunidades. Nadie sabe cómo se
desarrollarán las cosas, aún así, la historia nos muestra que el bien
inmueble es la mejor y la más redituable inversión. Los Cabos es un
destino de moda y siempre será una ubicación deseada por todos.
Hay muchas razones por las cuales el mejor tiempo es ahora, al
igual del porque las personas no deben negarse el estilo de vida o
los objetivos de inversión y esperarse a que haya un nuevo auge.
¿Quién fue la persona que más ha contribuido con tu éxito?
Debo gran parte de mi éxito a mi madre. Ella siempre confió en mis
decisiones y me motivó para que creyera en mi misma. Aprendí a
adaptarme a cualquier situación y a manejar cualquier reto que
se me presentara con tacto, autodisciplina y una actitud positiva.
¡Esto también puede ser la razón por la cual siempre me las arreglo
para encontrar los más increíbles clientes con los cuales trabajar!
Espero con ansía a los meses y años venideros para conocer más
personas en Baja y continuar con mi carrera.
