STAT CORNER
WHO ARE THE BEST PERFORMERS IN BLACK COLLEGE SPORTS
LUT WILLIAMS
BCSP Editor
If October is "Homecoming Month" in
black college football then this week should be
labelled "Homecoming Week" with 16 of the
special games on tap.
But the homecomings take on added signif-
icance this week as they involve teams locked in
heated battles for conference honors.
HOMECOMINGS
Grambling State (4-3, 4-0) pulled off a
shocker in the SWAC with a 28-21 home win
over East Division leader and former BCSP
No. 1 Alcorn State Saturday and must avoid
the proverbial "trap game" at its homecoming
against Arkansas-Pine Bluff (1-4) Saturday (2
p.m.). The Golden Lions (0-3 in the SWAC) are
looking for their frst conference win.
Under frst-year head coach Broderick
Fobbs, Grambling has rebounded from two off
years and an embarrassing debacle that made
national headlines last season to be the only
undefeated team in the SWAC and the current
leader in the West. No one projected the G-Men
to bounce back so quickly but they've done just
that under Fobbs's direction.
BCSP No. 4 Alcorn State (4-2, 3-1) looks
to bounce back from its frst conference loss in
a tough date at its homecoming (2 p.m.) vs. No.
7 Texas Southern (5-1). At 3-1 in the SWAC,
TSU is tied with idle Southern just behind
Grambling in the SWAC West.
Mississippi Valley State (2-5, 1-4) also
has its homecoming (2 p.m.) vs. Prairie View
A&M (2-4, 2-3).
The other new coach sharing the head-
lines is Jerry Mack of North Carolina Cen-
tral whose Eagles went into Orangeburg, S. C.
Saturday and stunned perennial power South
Carolina State and the rest of the MEAC with a
48-35 upset win Saturday.
The Eagles, who now sit tied atop the
MEAC with Bethune-Cookman at 2-0, must
hit the road to play at Morgan State's home-
coming (1 p.m). Morgan State, 3-3 overall under
new coach Lee Hull, is one of fve teams now
tied for third in the MEAC at 2-1.
Also in the MEAC, Delaware State (2-
5) and No. 6 North Carolina A&T (5-2), two
more of the 2-1 teams in league play, tangle in
Dover, Del. at the Hornets' homecoming. How-
ard (1-6, 0-4) looks for its frst conference win
at homecoming (1 p.m.) vs. Florida A&M (1-5,
1-1).
The CIAA North battle is between Virginia
State (4-2, 3-0) and Bowie State (2-4, 2-1) at
the BSU homecoming at 4 p.m. VSU is current-
ly tied with new BCSP No. 10 Virginia Union
at the top of the division with 3-0 conference
records. BSU is in third at 2-1.
VUU (5-1, 3-0) plays at Chowan (1-5, 0-3)
in a non-homecoming East Division game.
In the CIAA South, division leader and
BCSP No. 2 Winston-Salem State (5-1, 3-0)
has its homecoming (1:30 p.m.) vs. Saint Au-
gustine's. The Falcons (2-4, 2-1), have gotten
back in the division race since Michael Morand
took over as head coach winning two of its three
league games. The game will be carried live on
the CIAA TV Network.
In a SIAC East Division tussle, leader Al-
bany State (3-2, 2-0) is at second-place More-
house's (4-2, 3-1) homecoming (2 p.m.).
In the West, Miles is lurking just behind the
West Division leaders Tuskegee and Stillman at
2-0 headed into its game at homecoming (1:30
p.m.) at Kentucky State (2-4, 1-2).
SIAC
Tuskegee and Stillman are both 3-0 and
atop the SIAC West and will lock horns for di-
vision supremacy in Tuscaloosa, Ala. at 1 p.m.
Saturday.
Stillman is averaging 51.5 points over the
past two weeks with QB Josh Straughan set-
ting the league on fre, throwing 11 TD passes
over that span. He connected for 488 yards and
fve scores in last week's 48-36 win over Bene-
dict just one week after connecting for 292
yards and six TDs in a 55-16 win over Lane.
Straughan's primary weapons are running
back Jovantae Thurmon (90.7 ypg., 7 TDs)
and wide receiver Dondre Purnell (38 recep-
tions, 2 TDs).
He should have a harder time against a stin-
