1 Introduction

This document constitutes a global assessment relating to Danube Group, KINGSA 90 minute fire resisting doorsets. The assessment uses established extrapolation and interpretation techniques in order to extend the scope of application by determining the limits for the design based on the tested constructions and performances obtained. The assessment is an evaluation of the potential fire resistance performance, if the elements were to be tested in accordance with BS 476: Part 22: 1987.

2 General S.pecification of Construction

The construction for Danube KINGSA 90 door leaves covered by this assessment comprises the foll.owing:

Element Materia'is Dimensions Density
(mm) (kg/m3)
Core Particleboard 60 thick 695
(2 x 30)
Stiles None ~ -
Rails None ~ -
Lippings Oak (all edges) 3 thick 660 3 Leaf Sizes and Configurations

Assessment for increased leaf dimensions is based on the margin of the designs over performance and the characteristics exhibited during test. Data sheets specifying the maximum assessed leaf sizes and graphs showing the permitted gradient between maximum height and width are contained in appendix C.

Doorsets containing leaves with smaller dimensions than those stated are deemed to be less onerous and are therefore automatically covered.

Based on the test evidence listed in appendix A, this assessment covers the following doorset configurations:

5 Overpanels

At this level of performance overpanels are not assessed for use with this doorset design.

6 Glazing

Glazing is not assessed for inclusion with this doorset design.

7 Facing Materials

7.1 Optional materials

The Danube KINGSA90 design is a homogeneous core and therefore alternative facing materials are not appropriate.

7.2 General

Additional timber veneers, foils and plastic laminates up to 2mm thick, in addition to planted timber mouldings are acceptable, since these elements would degrade rapidly under test conditions without significant effect. These products must not be applied to the leaf edg1es. Metallic facings are not permitted.

8 Uppings

The minimum lipping specification for both designs is as follows:

- SQUARE::

- ROUNDED =

-REBATED ::

3mm thick (maximum) Not pennitted

Not permitted

All edges of the leaves must be lipped using a hardwood with a minimum density of 660kg/m3and the timber must be to class J30 as specified in as EN 942: 2007 (see section 19).

9 Door Frames

9.1 Door Frame Construction

Door frames for Danube KINGSA 90 doorsst must be constructed from a minimum section of 90mm wide x 32mm thick hardwood, with a minimum density of 660kg/m3 and the timber must be to class J30 as specified in as EN 942: 2007 (see section 19). A 12mm deep planted or rebated stop is adequate for single acting frames

9.2 Door Frame Installation

Door frames must be fully contained within the structural opening thickness and fixed and sealed as detailed in sections 15 and 16 respectively.

1 o Intumescent Materials

It is of paramount importance that the type, size and fitling detail for the intumescent seals remains as tested. These products can often exhibit Significantly different characteristics which could alter the performances obtained during test and therefore they must not be considered automatically interchangeable, irrespective of whether the product has been tested and the seal dimensions are maintained.

The following intumescent materials have been tested and assessed for use with the Danube KliNGSA 90 doorset design:

Furniture Stainless steel handles - Fitted appropriate to the
latch 13 Alternative & Additional Hardware

13.1 Hinges

Hinges must be equivalent to the specification detailed in section 12. Doorsets with leaves below 2135mm high may reduce the number of hinges to 3.

13.2 Latches & Locks

Alternative latches and locks must be manufactured from equivalent materials and must not exceed the dimensions of the tested product detailed in section 12.

13.3 Automatic Closing Devices

Alternative automatic closing devices must be products that can demonstrate contribution to the required performance of this type of timber based 90 minute doorset design, whe n tested to BS4 76: Part 22: 1987 or BSE N 1634-1: 2000 (floo r spri ngs and concealed closers are not permitted).

13.4 Pull Handles

These may be surface-fixed to the door leaf provided that they are steel or brass and their length is limited to 1000 mm. No additional intumescent protection is required.

Report for: Danube Group Ref: ChiitlA09022

13.5 Push Plates/Kick Plates

Face-fixed ironmongery such as push plates and kick plates may be fitted to the doorsets provided that they require no removal of timber and do not return across leaf edges. These items of ironmongery must not amount to more than 15% of the door leaf area.

13.6 Acoustic, Weather and Dust Seals

Silicon based flame retardant acoustic, weather and dust seals (e.g. Lorient IS1212, IS1511, IS7025si etc.) may be fitted to this doorset design with out compromising the performance, providing their fitting does not interfere with the activation of the intumescent seals or hinder the self closing function of the leaves.

14 Door Gaps

If substantially different gaps are employed, the fire resistance performance of this doorset design may change. The following table is presented for guidance.

Location Dimension
Door edge gaps Minimum of 2mm and a maximum of 4mm
Alignment tolerances Leaves must not be proud of from the door frame by more than
1mm
Threshold 10mm between bottom of leaf and top of floor covering 15 Fixings

The supporting construction must be capable of staying in place and intact for the full period of fire resistance required from the doorset. The frame jambs are to be fixed to the supporting construction using steel fixings at 500mm maximum centres. The fixings must be of the appropriate type for the supporting construction and must penetrate to a minimum depth of 40mm. It is not necessary to fix the frame head, although packers must be inserted.

16 Sealing to Structural Opening

The door frame to structural opening gap must be protected using one of the following methods:

1. Max gap of 20mm tightly packed with mineral fibre and filled on both faces with a 10mm depth of intumescent mastic that has demonstrated 90 minutes integrity to 8S476 : Part 22 : 1987 or BSEN 1634-1 (between masonry and timber or mineral composite).

2. Full depth timber/timber based composite material or non-combustible subframe up to 20mm thick, with gaps up to 10mm between components sealed with a 20mm depth of intumescent mastic that has demonstrated 90 minutes integrity to 8S476 :

Part 22 : 1987 or BSEN 1634-1 (between masonry and timber or mineral composite).

3. Proprietary gap filling product that has demonstrated 90 minutes integrity to 8S476 :

Part 22 : 1987 or BSEN 1634-1 (between masonry and timber or mineral composite, for the required gap dimensions).

Report for: Danube Group Ref: Chi1VA0902.2

17 Smoke Control

If the doorset design is required to provide a smoke control function to comply with Building Regulations, then it must be fitted with a smoke seal, or combined intumescent/smoke seal, that has been tested in accordance with BS 476 : Part 31 :

Section 31.1 and demonstrated to maintain the leakage rate below 3m3/m/h when tested at 25Pa. Providing the smoke seals, door gaps, type/configuration of door is consistent with the tested detail, then the doorset wlll comply with current smoke control legislation and a suffix'S' may be added to the designation.

Note: The incorrect specification and fitting of smoke seals may impair the operation of a fire resisting doorset assembly such that integrity is reduced, or in the extreme case completely diminished.

1:8 Insulation

Insulation performance may be claimed for a doorset to this design meeting the following:

Type Details
Partially insulating Not applicable
Fully insulating Unglazed doorsets 19 Classification of Timber

Timber used for manufacturing door frames and lippings, must meet or exceed class J30 as specified in BSEN 942: 2007,. providing any defects are repaired.

20 Conclusion

If the Danube KINGSA 90 doorset design constructed in accordance with the specification documented tn this global assessment, were to be tested in accordance with 8S476: Part 22 : 1987, it is our opinion that it would achieve a minimum of 90 minutes integrity and insulation (subject to section 18).

The inward opening doorset B failed prematurely at 87 minutes due to flaming at the top opening corner,

In order that a full 90 minutes performance may be claimed for inward opening doorsets (relative to fire exposure), assessment is made to increase the volume of intumescent material contained in the leaf to door frame junction. This revision to the tested specificati.on will prevent movement of the leaf and erosion of the vulnerable leaf to frame junction.

The modified intumescent seal requirement is as follows:

• Increase the lorient LP2006 20 x 6mm primary seal' fitted in the door frame, to LP2506 25 x6mm.
