Amir’s birthday gifts

Amir pitches all the gifts he

receives to the corner of his
bedroom with the exception of
Rahim Khan’s gift.
Ali and Hassan present their own gift.
Amir’s last
lie
•Amir tells Baba he is missing his wrist
watch and a couple of envelopes with cash.

•“Then I knocked on Baba’s door and told

him what I hoped would be the last in a long
line of shameful lies.”

•Ali and Hassan are called to Baba’s study.

They are both crying.

•Hassan confesses he is responsible for the

disappearance of the items.

•Baba forgives Hassan, but Ali decides to

leave

•Baba is seen crying for the first time.

Loyalty
•Hassan remains loyal to Amir until the
end. He confesses to a crime he does not
do---- another sacrifice.

•“Then I understood: this was Hassan’s final

sacrifice for me. If he’d said no, Baba would
have believed him because we all know
Hassan never lied. And if Baba believed
him, then I’d be the accused; I would have
to explain and I would be revealed for what
I really was. Baba would never, ever,
forgive me. And that led to another
understanding: Hassan knew. He knew I’d
seen everything in that alley, that I’d stood
there and done nothing. He knew I had
betrayed him and yet he was rescuing me
once again, maybe for the last time.”
