Unit 3: Flash to the Rescue Film and Photography

Stop motion is a technique used in animation to make an object appear to move on its own. The object is
moved in small increments and captured though individual photographs/frames. When the series of
photographs are put together, the illusion of movement is created.

For this project, you will create a stop-motion animation. You will be divided into four groups of two and one
group of three. Each group will include at least one grade 12 student. The groups will be decided at random by
drawing names from a hat. Your animation will be a minimum of one-minute long and will play to a song of
your choice that fits your overall plot. Your animation will be created using an animation program of your
choice; we will discuss possibilities in class. You will focus on framing, editing and overall design. We will
look at several stop motion videos to get you inspired!

In this unit you will explore and study still photography, motion photography, key figures including Etienne-Jules
Marey, Eadweard Muybridge, Thomas Edison, Auguste and Louis Lumiere, Georges Mlis, Edwin Porter, the
storyboard, camera shots, angles and movements, production and planning and stop motion. You will familiarize
yourself and expand your knowledge of still and motion photography.

Plot: Create a day in the life of a fictional character.
Step 1: Brainstorm ideas.
Step 2: Designate roles.

complete a peer-evaluation as well as a self-evaluation at the end of the unit. Please note, you will be given an
individual and a group mark.
