Geography (1 Week.)

Classroom Diversity:

The class consists of 30 students with a variety of learning capabilities, including two students with low literacy and four
students who have been identified as highly capable based on their NAPLAN test results. The classroom is diverse and has
students with EAL/D

Unit Description:

This is the first unit of two dedicated on the topic, Environmental Change and Management over a ten week period. The unit is
taken from the Australian National Curriculum and focuses on; the human induced changes and the Aboriginal and Torres Strait
Islander approaches to land management.

Revision:

This unit is building upon the Introduction Unit to Year Ten Geography, which focuses on teaching students the basic
geography skills of; sketching, map reading etc.

Assessment

Formative: Worksheet and class debate based on the movie, Mabo by Rachel Perkins (2012)

Students will attend a field trip to Glenelg and Formative


Sellicks Beach to look at the effects of long shore Assessment
drift, coastal erosion, and to observe the effects of
human development.
Students will be required to complete a Field Trip
Handbook. Students will then use this information
to create a Field Trip Report.

Advanced Students: Will be required to use a local


and overseas example to support their argument.
Learning Difficulties: Students will have the task
modified and word limit reduced or a Negotiated
Learning Plan will be used.

Students will be required to write down 10


facts/observations for their Fact Swap activity sheet
during the double period.
Students will be confirming their learning attainment
through a class debate on the importance of the
landscapes in media/film for the remainder of the class.

Students will be required to use their data to


support their recommendations on human
development on the beach.

Differentiation

Students will be required to watch the movie, Mabo


directed by Rachel Perkins (2012) during a double period.

Students will have to hand in their Fact Swap activity


sheet for formative marking.

Differentiation

Advanced Students: Will be made class adjudicators and


time keepers.
Learning Difficulties: Full participation is expected for this
activity.
