Inmanylessdevelopedcountriesstandardoflivingisbasedontheamountof
healthbenefitsthatthemajorityofthecountryhadaccess.Healthbenefitssuchasvaccinesfor
children,foodstampsandevenavailabledrinkingwater.Astimegoeson,countryseconomic
statusimproveswhichwillallowabiggerpopulationofsaidcountryaccesstothosehealth
benefitsandmore.Somytwovariablesarethepercentageofavailableimprovedsanitation
facilitiesinAngolaandtime,20years.IchosetouseAngolasdatabecauseeventhoughtheir
economicimprovementhasincreasedbydoubledigitseachyear,lifeformostofthepopulation
isstillrough,thelifeexpectancyinAngolaisoneoftheworstintheworldatarankof203
(CIA).TheamountofsanitationfacilitiesissignificantlysmallforLDCssuchasAngola,in
relationtotheirpopulation.Ichosethevariableofthepercentageofsanitationfacilitiesbecause
accesstocleandrinkingwatercorrelateswiththeamountofmalnutritionandjustsimplythe
wellbeingofthecountryspeople.Cleandrinkingwaterisoneofthemostimportantnecessities
thatcanbeunderratedoroverlookedbyMDCs.
Mydataisover20years,beginningat1992continuingonto2012.NowAngolas
economicstatuschangedsignificantlyinthattimeperiodbutthenumberofsanitationfacilities
inratiotopopulationonlygradually
increasedovertime.Atfirstglanceofthe
scatterplotIthoughtthataradicalfunction

wouldsuitmydatathebest.Butafterasystemoftrialanderror,Idiscoveredthataquadratic
functionbestfitmydata,whichaftermorethoughtmadealotmoresensebasedonthewaythe
numberschangeeachyear.
Bytheslopeofthegraphwecantellthatthenumbersdontjustgouplinearlybutrather
thenumberofnewfacilitiesincreaseseachyeargivingtheslopeofthelineacurvedquadratic
versusthedeadonlineofalinearfunction.Theyinterceptforthislineisabout28becausethe
dataIreceiveddoesnotbeginwhenAngolabuilttheirfirstsanitationfacilityinsteadthedata
beginswhentheyalreadyhave28facilities.
Whentestingfortheclosetregressionequationforafunction,onelooksattherofr
squaredvalue,thisnumberdetermineshowaccurateofafitthefunctionis.Thecloserthe
numberistoonethemoreaccuratethefunctionisforthatsetofdata.Formydatathersquared
valuewas.99868whichisremarkablyclosetooneandthebiggestnumberIreceivedforanr
squaredvaluewiththissetofdata.
Theregressionequationforthefunctionwasy=a(x^2)+bx+c.Thevaluesofa,b,andc
were.0054,1.354,and28.09makingthefinalequationbeingy=.0054(x^2)+1.354x+28.09.
Ifyouwantedtofindoutthenumberoffacilitiesatacertainyearnotonthegraph,youwould
substitutethenumberofyearsforthexvalueintheequation.Forexample,ifyouwantedto
knowhowmanyfacilitiestherewereafter5moreyears,soin2018,youwouldsubstitute25for

Thisveryimportantdatathatcanbeusedbymanydifferentcareertypesand
reasons.Environmentalists,doctors,sanitationworkersandhumanitariansaresomeofthefew
careerswherethedatacouldbeusedofhelpful.Doctorsofthisregionbecausethelackofclean
watercouldaccountformanydifferentdiseasesandhealthproblems,knowledgelikethiscould
helpthediagnosethecauseofsuchmedicalissues.Humanitariansbecausethiskindof
informationcouldhelpthemdeterminewhoneedsthemosthelpatleastwithaccesstoclean
water.
Thepercentageoffacilitiesinrelationshiptoacountryspopulationshouldbe100%,
worldwideitshouldbe100%becausethemorethenumberoffacilitiesisthelargerthe
possibilityisthateveryoneisgettingcleandrinkingwater.Itwilltakeseveralmoreyearsfor
LDCstohave100%,inAngolaitwillbeaboutabout2526moreyearsuntiltheycouldreach
100%.2526yearsisfartoolongforthemtoowait.Thiskindofinformationisimportant,
especiallyforhumanitarians,becauseitputsitintoperspectivehowfewpeoplehavesanitized
waterorevenjustfilteredwater,whichgreatlyoutweighsanyotherneedscountriesmightneed.
Thisisimportantinfo,sowecanhelpthenumberofmalnutritionanddiseaseinourworldgo
down.Lesssufferingandhealthierchildrenisallanyonecanhopefor,thisdatashowshowmuch
morepeopleneedtodotomaximizethat.
