Veterans Day ceremony honors nations heroes

Service includes
wreath presentation,
Veterans Walkway
acknowledgment
By ZANE CLARK
The Sun
History has taught us all that
freedoms are never free, but require vigilance and commitment
from us who enjoy them," said Fr.
Richard Regan of St. Joan of Arc
Parish, as he delivered the opening prayer at the Evesham Township Veterans Day ceremony and
asked those before him to lift up
all the men and women who have
defended the nations freedom.
With Regans brief prayer,
along with the national anthem
sung by Carmen Malatino and a
presentation by the Cherokee
High School JROTC color guard,
a crowd gathered at the township
municipal building on the sunny
Nov. 10 morning and honored the
men and women of the United
States armed forces.
Those gathered for the ceremony included members of township
council,
Assemblyman
Christopher J. Brown, members
of the police department and firerescue, residents and multiple
veterans from the township.
The ceremony included a
wreath presentation from Operation Yellow Ribbon of South Jer-

Mayor Randy Brown told the
crowd they were there to honor
the nations heroes, and to remember their achievements,
courage and dedication, and to

give thanks for their sacrifices.

Thinking of the heroes who
join us today, and those who are
here only in spirit, a person cant
help but feel awed by the enormity of what we encounter, Brown
said. We stand in the midst of

patriots and friends who have

nobly served. You have made our
armed forces the most respected
in the world.
Brown also spoke of how the
service members honored on Veterans Day come from all walks of
life, but share those same fundamental qualities of courage,
pride, determination, sacrifice,
selflessness and a dedication to
duty and integrity.
Brown said those qualities
were those needed to serve a
cause larger than oneself, both in
those who volunteered and those
who never asked to leave their
homes.
They didnt go to war because
they love fighting; they were
called to be a part of something
bigger than themselves, Brown
said. They were ordinary people
who responded in extraordinary
ways in extreme times. They rose
to the nations call because they
wanted to protect the nation
which has given them and us so
much.
Resident Viki Honeywell attended the event, accompanied by
her dog Trevor, an Airedale, wearing a patriotic red white and blue
ribbon with his collar.
I brought him because they
used Airedales in World War I to
carry messages from the trenches, back and forth between the
trenches, Honeywell said. They

Local novelist Pam Jenoff
grew up in Marlton, currently resides in

her life.
From

Poland, to graduate of the

much.
However, throughout that long list of
accomplishments
was Jenoff s lingering desire to

That desire
eventually
came to forefront
of
Jenoff s life
in September

after the

Its the season to help others; let us know about your fundraiser or drive
Dan McDonough Jr.

orry to say this so early, while 60degree days were here just a few
days ago, but, alas, the holiday
season has arrived.
The good news is that means many
good-hearted people and organizations
will be gathering food, clothing, toys,
money and other items for those less
fortunate.
At The Sun, we want to help make
your event or drive as successful as
possible. But to do that, we need your
help.
Many retailers count on Black Friday to help put their business in the
black for the year. If holiday sales are
strong, they have a good overall year. If
sales are soft, they struggle to get by.
The same theory can hold true for
nonprofits and other groups that de-

effort or donation drive, and well tell

pend on the publics generosity during

the holiday season to see them through
the rest of the year. People, naturally,
are more giving during this time of the
year. So, in the coming weeks, youll
see bell-ringers, donation drives and a
lot of other efforts to help those in
need.
We salute everyone who holds a
drive to help those in need. But we also
want to help make those efforts as
grand and successful as possible.
To do that, we need to know about

your event as soon as possible (at least

two weeks is best). We need to know
what types of items you are trying to
collect, who will benefit from the drive,
and, most importantly, how people can
get involved to help you.
Email is the best way to send us this
information, and youll find our news
email address to the right.
Then, after we get your information,
well take it from there. Well get it into
the paper and let everyone in town
know what it is you are trying to accomplish and how they can be a part of
it.
Many families are still struggling
with the economy. There always are
people in need. Let us help you to help
them. Send us your event information
and lets make this a big donation year.

Council approves new four-year police contract

Agreement includes salary increases, patrol moving to townships self-insurance program
By ZANE CLARK
The Sun
After months of negotiations between
the township and the police patrol, the two
sides finally came to an agreement, and the
Evesham Township Council ratified a new
four-year police patrol contract at its Nov.
12 meeting. The new contract spans 2014,
2015, 2016 and 2017, and has three primary
features, according to township manager
Tom Czerniecki salary increases, the consolidation of salary increase step guides
for offices hired before the 2008 recession
and those hired after, and, most important
of all, an agreement for the patrol to move
to the townships self-insurance program.
Basically, higher copays, higher deductibles, a greater emphasis on proactive
management of your benefits packageit

really encourages people to use Teladoc, to

visit urgent care clinics rather than go to
emergency rooms and participate in our
wellness program, Czerniecki said.
Mayor Randy Brown also extolled the
virtues of having the patrol in the townships self-insurance program, or gold plan
as the township calls it, and said much of
the negotiations were ensuring the patrol
understands how the gold plan would benefit them and their families.
The gold plan doesnt harm their families, it actually helps them by the different
things of which the gold plan entails,
which is generic prescriptions, urgent care
and things that will make life easier for
them and even quicker for them, Brown
said.
Regarding the salary increases, Czerniecki said those would start retroactive
for 2014 at 1.95 percent, the second year

with 1.95 percent, the third year with 1.75

percent and then the fourth year again
with 1.95 percent.
Czerniecki said the other feature is consolidating the two salary guides, which he
likened to steps, where officers go into the
steps system until they reach top grade.
We have two guides, one for officers
hired before the 2008 recession and one
guide for those hired after, and we knew it
was inevitable that we would have to consolidate those two into one 12-step guide,
Czerniecki said.
Chief of Police Christopher Chew said it
took cooperation to get the contract done,
and everybody worked as a team.
It wasnt easy, but cooler heads prevailed, Chew said.
Chew also thanked former township

Jenoff has written

seven books
JENOFF
Continued from page 2

Jewish Emma Bau and her life as

the Nazis invade her native
Poland.
Seven years later, and now having written seven books, Jenoff s
life as a writer is still in full
swing.
As recently as last week, Jenoff
was once again a guest at the Katz
JCCs Arts, Books and Culture
Festival, the annual weeklong series that brings Jewish authors,
speakers, artists, events and activities to the center.
As a member of the Katz JCC
and author whose books all have
the epicenter of World War II,
Jenoff said appearing at the ABC
Festival in Cherry Hill was special.
I always joke that I could
stand in the middle of Barnes &
Noble holding a sign and not get
recognized as a writer, but if Im
in the locker-room here getting
dressed, someone will be like
arent you? so its special on
many levels to be here and talk to
my home community.
And while Jenoff said she
wouldnt necessarily describe
herself as observant, she said Judaism is essential to her identity
and work.
I think my years in Poland, really seeing what had happened
there and the way people were
trying to hold on to that last little
bit of Jewish life over there, really cemented it for me, really cemented my identity much more

so, Jenoff said.

With that in mind, Jenoff describes the Katz JCC as a type of
home field shes always excited
to play.
I use the expression in Jewish
its the Shtetl, which is like the
village, so this is the modern-day
equivalent of the village where
we come and we know everybody
and its a safe and inviting place
that we love.
Jenoff also extends that love of
connecting with people to those
outside Cherry Hill, both when
visiting book fairs across the
country and interacting with
readers online.
In the Internet age, Jenoff said
shes able to connect with readers
on a sustained, meaningful basis,
video-chatting with book clubs or
just seeing how her books have
touched readers.
Smart, engaged groups of
readers like this are kind of my
happy
place
for
a
conversation...for me thats really
it, Jenoff said. I develop these
relationships so its about the
books, but its about so much
more than the books. Its about
the connections.
In addition to the The Kommandant's Girl, Jenoff s novels
include The Diplomat's Wife,
The Ambassadors Daughter,
Almost Home, A Hidden Affair, The Things We Cherished
and her newest work The Winter
Guest.
This is a very happy place for
me, having these two things, this
duality, Jenoff said. Its a little
bit busy, but its definitely worth
the stretch because I feel like I
work for myself.

Honeywell said her father, Lt.
Col. Richard Pindell, served as a

She attended the ceremony to

their country was important to

It was important to hima

at Winterfest on Dec. 5
SANTA
Continued from page 7
Life on Nov. 28 and 29, and the
following week on Dec. 5 and 6.
All shows start at 7:30 p.m. and
will be held at the Lenape Regional Performing Arts Center at 130
Tomlinson Mill Road. Tickets for
students and seniors will be $8,
with tickets for adults priced at
$12. As the township moves into
December, the Evesham Celebrations Foundation will once again
partner with the Evesham Fire
Department to host the annual
Winterfest on Friday, Dec. 5.
Located at the Main Street
Firehouse, the festivities will
start around 5 p.m., and will include free hot chocolate and other
crafts and foods that can be purchased from vendors. Then
around 6 p.m., after his long trip
from the North Pole, Santa Claus
will arrive for free pictures with

kids.
I think the highlight of the
event is children seeing Santa
and getting their picture taken
with himI still get a kick out of
seeing him coming down the fire
pole, Evesham Celebrations
Foundation member Sandy Student said.
On Saturday, Dec. 6, residents
looking to give back to those serving in the armed forces will have
the chance with Operation Yellow
Ribbon of South Jerseys holiday
cookie and baked goods drive.
From 10 a.m. 2 p.m. at the 8th
Legislative District Office at 176
Route 70, Suite 13 in Medford,
members of OYRSJ will be onhand to receive donated baked
goods and treats from members of
the community to be used in care
packages for those overseas.
Store bought treats are also accepted, although OYRSJ requests
that all donations are in layers in
large plastic bags or in disposable
containers.
Also throughout December,

Eveshams elementary schools

will host the following different
concerts for parents and family:
Wednesday, Dec. 3: DeMasi Elementary vocal concert at 7 p.m.
Tuesday, Dec. 9: Van Zant Elementary winter concert at 7 p.m.

manager Bill Cromie and the current township manager for their
hard work, and said the contract
ratified by council was well
earned by the patrol.

It was well earned by these

guys, Chew said. Everybody
benefited.
Brown said with the contract
expiring in 2014, it wasnt difficult to reach a new deal. According to Brown, during negotiations, many of the comments the
township received from the patrolmen were the township works

hard to give them almost everything possible to protect them

when theyre out in public doing
their jobs.
Weve got a first-rate police department, Brown said. They
know it, they like it, which was
probably one of the main reasons
why we were able to get a deal
done.
