PART I: PLANNING
The Changes the Seasons Bring

Title of Lesson
Is this lesson original idea? If not, from what source did I
borrow this lesson?
Source

The video and the final assessment came from the website
BrainpopJr.com. The idea for the anchor chart was an original
idea.
Science

Subject Area (s)

2nd
Grade Level

2.E.2A.1 Analyze and interpret data from observations

and measurements to describe local weather conditions
(including temperature, wind, and forms of
precipitation).

Curriculum Standards
What will students experience during the lesson? What is
the content to be taught?
Description and
Background Information

Students will learn about temperature as it relates to the seasons.

Students will also learn about different types of precipitation and

discuss what season you would experience each type of

precipitation in.
What will I need to teach this lesson? What do students need
to participate?

Materials

Smart board

Sticky notes

A board or a big sheet of paper

pencils

What will students be able to do at the conclusion of this

lesson?

Students will be able to:

Lesson Objectives

Differentiate the seasons by the temperature

Read a thermometer

Discuss different types of precipitation and what season

they are found in.

How will I vary these objectives for students who do not

understand the material?
How will I vary these objectives for students who have
already mastered the concept?
Varying Objectives for
Individuals Needs

How will I vary these objectives for students who are

presently learning English?
I will vary these objectives for students who do not understand the
material by relating it to something they know. I will use pictures, a
video and written chart so that students can make connections to
the material and comprehend the lesson.

For students who have already mastered the concept, I will

combine word problem math with reading a thermometer. Instead
of students just reading the temperature on the thermometer
students will use word problem with addition and subtraction to
determine the weather.
For my 2 ESOL students, I will use pictures to help them better
understand and make connections to the material they are
presented.

Part II: IMPLEMENTATION

How will I find out what students already know about this
Pre-assessment

topic?
At the beginning of the lesson, I called out the names of the
seasons to see if students recognized what they were. I then had
students to tell me the type of clothing we wear during each
season and why.

What will I do to make a connection between students and

Motivation

this lesson?
I will have students get in small groups and discuss their favorite
season and what things they like to do during that season.
What will I say to explain the importance of learning this
lesson?

Statement of Purpose

The importance of this lesson is that the weather can affect our
everyday lives. The way we dress and the activities that we can
participate in are all affected by the weather.
What will I do to show students what is expected?

Teacher Modeling or

I will write about snow and stick it under winter on an anchor

Demonstration

chart. I will also write a temperature on a sticky note and put it

under the season that it corresponds to. I will also draw a picture
of a piece of clothing and place it under the corresponding
season. This will give students an idea of what I mean by
characteristics of each season. By allowing students to contribute
information in different ways it will allow all students to be
engaged in the lesson.
What will we do together as they learn how to succeed at the
new task?

Guided Practice

As a class we will create an anchor chart to serve as a visual

display as we complete our task. Students will be responsible for
writing facts about each season and placing it in the appropriate
area on our chart. We will then go over the facts that students
have come up with as a class.
What will I ask to know if students understand so far? What

Checking for
Understanding

techniques or strategies will be used to determine if students

understand so far?
My informal assessment during the lesson will be creating an
anchor chart of the seasons. Students will write a characteristic of
each season on for different post it notes and place them under
each season.
What will students do to internalize the knowledge?
To internalize knowledge, students will create a web for reference.

Independent Practice

Students will make a chart in their notebook. They will label each
section with a season. They will write down at least four points
from our anchor chart under each section.
What will students do to demonstrate what they have

Assessment
(attach to lesson plan)

learned?
At the end of the lesson students will complete a test that was
provided by the website Brainpop jr.
How will I conclude the lesson and relate it to future

Closure

experiences?
I will conclude the lesson with students looking up the forecast for
the following week. Students will take turns at the end or
beginning of the day reporting the weather to the class. Students
will include the season, the temperature and also what students
should wear.
What can students do at home or in the classroom to apply

Extension Activities

the knowledge or skills? How could you use your colleagues

or community agencies to improve student performance?
Students could watch the news at home with their parents and
use the weather report to pick out their clothes for the next day. I
could use community agencies such as local news station
meteorologist to come out and talk to students about how the
weather affects people.

How is technology meaningful to this lesson?

Technology will be used to show students examples of how a
Technology

thermometer works since they did not have access to a real thermometer.
By watching the video clip students were also able to make visual and
mental connections to each season and the type of weather that occurs
during each season. Students also got to see the way that we dress during
each season so that they could make connections to how the weather
effects the way we dress.
How could this lesson connect other content area across the

Connection Across the

Curriculum

curriculum?
This lesson could tie into math. The students are currently learning to
compute word problems. They could use word problems to determine the
temperature. Students could also tie this lesson to ELA by writing a short
paragraph or narrative about the seasons and their characteristics such as
the temperature or the type of precipitation that falls during that season.
Students will incorporate the arts by drawing a picture to illustrate each
season. Students will incorporate health by discussing how the weather
during each season can affect the foods that we eat. Students will also
incorporate P.E. by acting out the different activities that they during
each season.

PART III: REFLECTION

Describe the strengths of my instructional techniques, strategies and
classroom management.
Strengths

Describe the strengths of student engagement.

The strength of my instructional techniques used for this lesson was that
I related my lesson to something that the students were familiar with. I
challenged students to make connections with the material they learned
and the way people dressed during each season. This allowed students to
make connections and think on a higher level.
Describe the weaknesses of my instructional techniques, strategies
and classroom management.

Weaknesses

Describe the weaknesses of student

engagement.
The weakness of my lesson was that I did not manage my time as well as
I would have liked to. If I had prepared a little more and gave the
students more hands on activities, I could have engaged them more and
cut down on disciplinary issues.

What specifically can I do to improve?

Suggestions for

To improve next time, I could add a more hands on scientific activity for

Improvement

students. I would like to find small thermometers for students to use.

They could find the temperature of different objects such as ice or room
temperature water. Students could also make rain gauges out of cups and
the next time it rains we could put our cups outside to measure the rain.
