WORKSHEET – POWERS AND ROOTS

o POWERS are a very useful shorthand:

6x6 = 62 six squared

4x4x4 = 43 four cubed
2x2x2x2 = 24 two to the power four
9x9x9x9x9 = 95 nine to the power five

an → a: base
n: index or power
RULES

1. When you multiply, you add the powers.

23 ⋅ 24 = 27

2. When you divide, you subtract the powers.

46
46 ÷ 43 = 3 = 43
4

3. When you raise one power to another, you multiply the powers.
(3 )
2 4
= 38

4. Anything to the power 1 is just itself.

x1 = x

5. Anything to the power 0 is just 1.

20 = 1

o SQUARE ROOTS

Square root means “ what number times by itsef gives ...”

Example: Find the square root of 49.

The square root of 49 is 7 ( 49 = 7 )

8 - 3 = 5 → eight minus three is five

eight take away three is five

8 is the MINUEND
3 is the SUBTRAHEND
5 is the DIFFERENCE

MULTIPLICATION (x)

8 x 3 = 24 → eight times three is twenty-four

8 , 3 are called FACTOR

24 is the PRODUCT

DIVISION ( ÷ )

8 3 → eight divided by three is two and the

2 2 remainder is two

8 is the DIVIDEND
3 is the DIVISOR
2 is the QUOTIENT
2 is the REMAINDER
ORDER OF OPERATIONS

You always have to do the operations in the same order. The word
BODMAS will help you to remember the correct order.

BODMAS

B: Brackets
O: Others (powers and roots)
D: Division
M: Multiplication
A: Addition
