LICENCE CATEGORIES

LIGHT RIGID

For any rigid vehicle with a rear axle, and with a GVM of 4.5 to 8 tonnes, including a bus registered to carrying
more than 12 adults including the driver.

To be eligible to obtain a light rigid licence, you must have held an Australian Driver’s Licence for at least 12
months.

MEDIUM RIGID

For any rigid vehicle with 2 rear axles, and with a GVM of greater than 8 tonnes; including the capacity to tow a
single trailer to a maximum of 9 tonnes GVM.

To be eligible to obtain a medium rigid licence, you must have held an Australian Driver’s Licence for at least 12
months.

HEAVY RIGID – SYNCHROMESH OR NON-SYNCHROMESH

For any rigid vehicle with 3 or more axles, and with a GVM of greater than 8 tonnes; including the capacity to tow
a single trailer to a maximum of 9 tonnes GVM.

To be eligible to obtain a heavy rigid licence, you must have held an Australian Driver’s Licence for at least 24
months.

(Non-Synchromesh – heavy rigid vehicles with a road ranger or crash gear box)

HEAVY COMBINATION

For prime movers or single semi-trailer with a GVM greater than 9 tonnes, or rigid vehicles with a trailer greater
than 9 tonnes GVM.

To be eligible to obtain a heavy combination licence, you must have held an Australian Driver’s Licence for at least
24 months, including an MR or HR licence for at least 12 months.

MULTI COMBINATION

For heavy combination vehicles with one or more additional trailers.

To be eligible to obtain a heavy combination licence, you must have held an Australian Driver’s Licence for at least
24 months, including an HR or HC licence for at least 12 months including the completion of an approved course.
