Description of Activities and Setting

When you are reading 2 different stories, how are you able to keep track of the
storyline? (Books name, topic, theme, - prompt for all responses) So, if you
are comparing and contrasting two stories, what types of things would you
include? (Similarities and differences)
Today youre going to learn how to compare and contrast stories with similar
themes and topics. After we practice, youll be able to compare and contrast
stories on your own. Knowing how to compare and contrast helps you to be a
good reader because when you can compare and contrast what you have read,
you know you have understood it.
Compare and contrast means telling the similarities and differences of 2 or
more text. When we are comparing and contrasting it is important to include
your statement and the reason behind it. When we read text of similar themes
and topics it is important to compare and contrast so we do not get confused
of the two stories we read.
Explain that students will learn how to begin to compare and contrast when
they read using the information about the story. Ask students to identify the
elements of a story. (Characters, setting, events, problem, solution). Introduce
the Similar-Because-Reason, Different-Because-Reason framework by
writing it on the board. Use example to show how that framework can be
done.
