Brian, from Hatchet, is a 13 year-old boy who survived nearly 2

months alone in the Canadian wilderness after a violent plane crash.

Brian continuously put his fears aside and kept on going. He let his
survival instincts push him forward.
Brian is a brave character in Hatchet who faced many challenges while
surviving and thriving in the Canadian forest.
Brian risked his life in order to have the resources necessary to
survive. At one point in the novel, Brian dropped his hatchet in the lake.
Although the water was very deep, he kept on diving underwater until he
was able to reach the hatchet. Brian knew the hatchet was necessary for
survival. As the author states on page 174, Without the hatchet he had
nothing no fire, no tools, no weapons he was nothing. Brian also
risked his life when trying to retrieve the survival pack in the plane that
had crashed in the lake. He was able to cut into the side of the plane with
his hatchet so that he could enter the plane. He did this knowing there
was a dead pilot inside the plane and that he could drown. As the author
states on page 179, He held back for a moment, uncomfortable with the
thought of getting inside the plane. What if the tail settled back to the
bottom and he got caught and couldnt get out? Even though he was
afraid, Brian did it anyway because it was worth the risk to survive.
Brian also had to put his fears aside when he was attacked by various
wild animals. The first animal that Brian came into dangerous contact
with was a porcupine. The porcupine stuck Brian in the leg with eight
quills. Brian had to remove them himself. As the author states on page 81,
He grasped one of the quills, held his breath, and jerked. It sent pain
signals to his brain in tight waves, but he grabbed another, pulled it, then
another quill. Another animal that Brian encountered was a moose.
Brian was cleaning a fool bird after hunting when he was suddenly
attacked by a moose. As the author states on page 151, As soon as he
moved, the hair on her back went up and she charged him again, using her
head and front hooves this time, slamming him back and down into the
water, on his back this time, and he screamed the air out of his lungs and
hammered on her head with his fists and filled his throat with water and
she left again. Even while being attacked by a porcupine and a moose,
Brian fought to stay alive.
