Physical cell identities in the LTE system are used to differentiate between radio signals
of cells to ensure that PCIs are unique in the relevant cell overage. As specified in the
protocol, the cell ID at the physical layer consists of the cell group ID and the ID within
the cell group. there are 168 physical-layer cell groups and each cell group consists of
three IDs. therefore, there are a total of 504(0 to 503) cell IDs.
The formula for calculating the PCI is as follows:

(1)
(2)
cell
N ID
 3N ID
 N ID
(1)
N ID
indicates a cell group ID, ranging from 0 to 167.

(2)
N ID
indicates an ID within the cell group, ranging from 0 to 2.

In the LTE system, the positions of pilot symbols in the frequency domain are related to
the PCI allocated to a cell. Staggering the pilot symbols of neighboring cells in the
frequency domain can decrease the interference between pilot symbols to a certain
degree, thereby improving the overall network performance.
