EVALUATION 11

Note: All 4 tables constructed above are approximations. Air conditioner and light bulb usage
for one day is assumed to be 12 hours/day and the amount used is based on the average
weekly hotel occupancy/ 70%.

The hotels current usages of the appliances are not as energy conserving and eco-friendly as
they can be as the electrical bill is very high compared to other hotels. Additionally, based on
the hotel inspection, a lot of the models are outdated and do not have new technology
properties. Currently, the hotels electrical source is from fossil fuels, an unsustainable, non-
renewable and finite resource. The hotels electrical bill has also increased by 3% for the past
3 years.

However, this situation can be significantly changed for the better. Further research on
possible product improvements and implementations should be conducted.

Concluding, the quality and the electrical consumption of the equipment can be greatly
improved. If enhanced, impacts on the environment will be lessened and there will be long-
term economical benefits. This report will be concentrating on the changes that the hotel can
make to the guestrooms since guests consume a lot of the energy and there are varied types of
appliances used inside a room.

12 SOLUTIONS

In order to solve this problem, there are several ways the hotel can improve their
energy consumption by implementing the following ideas in the guestrooms:

1. Change of current light bulb model to Philips 5W LED
2. Change of current water tap model to American Standard Concept Square
3. Change of current air conditioner compressor model to Trane Rotary
4. Change of current refrigerator model to new Toshiba Minibar Fridge
5. Installation of SPR solar panels

Most of these products are newly improved models of the old ones. Each of the products will
include its specifications, possible benefits and calculated approximations of the energy
consumed and electrical fee is used in all guestrooms.

The price presented is based on the price per unit in the public consumer market, contact with
the individual companies itself will most likely provide lower prices if the product is brought in
a great quantity.

SOLUTION #1: LIGHT BULB 13

The current fluorescent light bulb used in Evason has

an electrical usage of 9W. This is a relatively high
consumption.

Suggested Model: 5W Philips LED Light bulb

Product Specifications and Benefits:

- LED or Light Emitting Diode have a longer
lifespan and a higher electrical efficiency
compared to incandescent and fluorescent
ones
- The consumption of this light bulb model
(5W) is significantly lower than the current
one in use (9W), especially once compared
in a larger scale
- Has a lifespan of 40,000 hours

Cost: 120 Baht / unit

16 SOLUTION #2: WATER TAP

The current tap water used in every Evason room is a standard model
that is commonly used in the hotel industry. However, the properties of
this model can be greatly improved.

Suggested Model: American Standard Concept Square
Water Tap (code A-0401-00)
Product Specification and Benefits:

-Includes a mixer faucet with plug, flexible hose and a stop

valve
-Has been tested to operate over 1.5 million on and off cycles
without any failure, ensuring drip-free use for a lifetime
-A very durable faucet body made out of brass, thick nickel
with a chromium finish. All materials are strong, tough and
resistant to scratch, rust, and peeling.
-Has an additional 20% of air pressure compared to the
current tap used. Once 20% of air is added, 20% of the water
consumption is decreased.

SOLUTION #2: WATER TAP 17

Since this model has 20% more air pressure, the American Standard Concept
Square Water Tap (code A-0401-00) will have a water consumption and expense
of usage in guestrooms as presented below:

COST: 1400 per unit x 1 unit per room x 180 rooms = 252,000 baht

To further increase the water-usage efficiency, the appliances used in the shower and bath can be improved to the model
suggested below. This model, also made by American Standard, has similar properties to this Concept Square Light Bulb
model. Both models should be used in all guestrooms to efficiently control the guests water usage.

COST: 3213 per unit x 1 unit per room x 180 rooms = 578340 baht

SOLUTION #3: REFRIDGERATOR 19

Currently, Evason is using an old Toshiba fridge, 1 unit in each room. In

reference to the evaluation of this model in page 8, the product should be
changed to significantly decrease the electrical consumption and electrical bill.

Suggested Model: Toshiba Mini Bar Fridge (GR-A706C(BK))

Product Specifications:
- Has a capacity of 1.7 Cu.Ft.
- Modern, suitable for any room styles
- Strong wired shelves that distribute cold air faster and more
competently

SOLUTION #4: AIR COMPRESSOR 21

Currently, Evason is using an old/outdated model of the Trane compressor, 1

unit in each room. In reference to the evaluation of this model in page 10, the
product should be changed to significantly decrease the electrical consumption
and electrical bill.

Suggested Model: Trane Rotary Compressor (QP306PAA)
Product Specifications:
- For 0.75 5 tons
- Rotary compressor

Evasons current model is a piston-type compressor; this new one is a
rotary compressor. The two types are very different as they have
different energy efficient ratios. The piston type consumes much more
electricity than the rotary type.

Rotary compressors have 2 rotating elements (similar to gears),
between which the refrigerant is compressed. The compressors pump
the refrigerant to lower or moderate condensing pressures. Since they
can handle small volume of the gas and produce les pressure, they are
used in fewer applications.

22 SOLUTION #4: AIR COMPRESSOR

(The cheaper 18,000 BTU model has been chosen)

TOTAL COST: 7500 baht per unit x 1 per room x 180 rooms = 1,350,000

SOLUTION #4: AIR COMPRESSOR 23

Below is a comparison table between the Evasons current compressor and the proposed one. Both of the models have the
same energy of 18,000 but the new Trane model has a lower energy consumption of 6 amps.

24 SOLUTION #5: SOLAR POWER ROOF

Sourcing renewable energy is often the solution to become more environmental friendly, renewable energy practices have
been more implemented in our society. An appropriate and reliable source for this is solar power as Thailands climate is
always hot and sunny, especially Pranburi/Huahin.

SPR or Solar Power Roof Co., Ltd is a hi-end solar roof service provider that specializes in installing solar panels to create clean
energy development for sustainable power security. The information presented below is based on product info provided by
SPR.

1. Highlights

3. The Solar Roofs Function

The solar roof system installed has a size of 3.8 kWp of electricity. The
system combines premium quality of solar modules produced by Kyocera,
Japan. Kyocera Corporation with no loss and cash reserved more than 3
billion USD has manufactured Solar Modules for more than 35 years, and its
modules have been used in the fields more than 30 years.

These solar modules convert solar energy into electricity (Direct Current)
and flow to the inverter converting it to electricity (Alternating Current). The
electricity then flows through the Main Distribution Board to power
electrical appliances in the home during daytime. Surplus electricity supply
can be stored to energy utilities to be approved by the Ministry of Energy.

It would be ideal for Evason to install solar panels on the roof of the lobby
building, dining building or even the villas. Electricity can possibly be
produced for generating warm water or lighting electricity.
Information on the cost will need to be obtained through contact with SPR itself.

28 FURTHER EVALUATION OF THE SOLUTIONS

IMPACTS OF THE SOLUTION:

There are countless benefits by implementing these solutions, in particular improvements to
the following aspects: society, economy, well-being, and the environment. These benefits can
be viewed in 4 different and distinct perspectives.

Economical

- Even though the products require a large
investment, there will be a higher return
for the long-run (payback can be
calculated)
- Since each of the products proposed
require less energy, the implementation
of them will lower electrical fees
- Savings can be re-invested in new
environmental measures to ensure a
continuous improvement
- Renewable energy will create more jobs
and promote this flourishing industry of
clean and safe energy

Well-Being and Society

- Creates a better overall environment for

guests and staff as making the hotel more eco-
friendly will promote a positive atmosphere
within the hotel grounds (especially with the
solar panels).
- Promotes the sustainable practice of operating
renewable energy systems and energy
conserving products within the Huahin and
possibly the rest of the world, as the hotel is a
part of the Evason/Six Senses brand.
- Create a domino effect in energy conservation
- Becoming more environmental friendly will
lessen environmental impacts, thus promoting
better health and an improved quality of
Living.

FURTHER EVALUATION OF THE SOLUTIONS 29

Environmental

- Significant and affirmative long term
impacts will be made if Evason reduces
their energy consumption and turns to
renewable energy
- Lower energy consumption means a
lower rate of fossil fuel burning and
release of greenhouse gases into our air.
- Will have lower contributions to climate
change and air pollution, which are two
very concerning issues for our future
- Will also create an environmental
awareness for guests and staff

Marketing and Sales

An additional point is the publicity about the
-
hotels action of becoming environmental
friendly that can be generated to raise the hotels
profile.

With assistance from the marketing team, hotel
can advertise their energy improvement through
social media and other forms of media. This will
undoubtedly enhance and progress the hotels
image to becoming more friendly and
respectable.

As guests are becoming increasingly aware of the
environmental issues and are getting more
sensitive to the environmental performances of
hotels, guests are more inclined to stay in more
eco-friendly hotels.

These improvements should be implemented
and publicized to potentially increase sales.

30 FURTHER EVALUATION OF THE SOLUTIONS

Examples of Environmental Friendly Beach Hotels with Great Performance

The increased popularity and noteworthy success of Eco-Hotels or Eco Tourism suggests
another reason for Evason to join the cause.

Including: Six Senses Con Dao, Spice Island Beach Resort, Park Hyatt Maldives, Rapa Lipas Ecolodge, Jean Michel Cousteaus Resort Fiji, Concordia Eco Resort

OTHER SOLUTIONS 31

Other than the five products proposed earlier, there are other type of solutions that should be implemented.

Below is a list of the other resolutions or behavioral changes that are believed to progress the hotels plan to
become eco-friendly even more.

1. Staff involvement + education

Since the staff is an important component in the hotels service, they should be aware of the issue and
become driven to maintain the environment and understand the different methods. To do so, this may
include lessons from professionals or possibly staff from other successful eco hotels to come and
explain the process and specific information on the impacts.

2. Guest involvement + enrichment

Educating the guests is also the key. Even though the majority of guests stay in the hotel for 2-3 nights,
the ecofriendly practices can be continued at home. Guests should be involved in conserving energy
and should understand the different methods the hotel is doing so. Additionally, guests can lower the
electrical consumption by turning off appliances when not in use. For example, there can be small
wooden signs to remind guests to turn off the air conditioner off before leaving the room. Or even a big
board in the lobby to present all the ways the hotel has been implementing better products and
sourcing renewable energy and the ways the guests can actually help. If guests understand the hotels

environmental commitments, it will create a more positive reflection on the hotel in which may lead to
better reviews, recommendations, perception, etc.

32 OTHER SOLUTIONS

3. Public Advertising of being an energy efficient/ecofriendly hotel

As mentioned earlier in the section above, the fact that the hotel is becoming more eco friendly will
change the hotels image and create good publicity if promoted properly. Since the eco tourism
industry is on the rise, guests will be more eager to support eco friendly hotels and with the right
publicity, the public will become aware of Evason Huahin and its sustainable practices. Advertising
methods may include for information to be spread on the hotels website, trip advisor, forums, CNN
travel, Yahoo travel, blogs, Instagram, etc. The effects of this point include better sales and a more
respectable and well-rounded reputation. Additionally, other hotels may look at Evason as a model and
become more inclined to implement similar practices, possibly other hotels under the Six Senses brand.
Undoubtedly, this will benefit the environment, society, economy, and future circumstance for the
better.

4. Advertising within the hotel

Advertising within the hotel will improve points 1 and 2 (staff and guest enrichment)
as everyone becomes more aware. A possible method of advertising would be to create
a visible, big board in the lobby, the pool or any public area in the hotel with
information on our effects to the environment, and the solutions that Evason has
implemented. Additionally, signs, pamphlets or artwork can be used to further promote
this idea.

Concluding, if these behavioral changes and education ideas are implemented

along with the energy-conserving products, Evason will find great success in
becoming eco-friendly.

CONCLUSION 33

By implementing these four products, the total cost reduction per year is 1326181.6 baht.
Clearly through all the calculations and tables, a significant amount of energy and money can
be saved. Even though all of the products require a large investment for it to be used in all of
the guestrooms, there is a high return and cost benefit.

Additionally, the solar roof panel should be put in serious consideration as Evason has the
ideal location, building and weather for these panels to be placed on. SPCG should be contacted
for more detail and information.

Not only should the products listed above be applied, Evason should also take further action in
becoming more eco friendly (as there are clear benefits) by applying more sustainable
practices. For instance, installing a small-scale wind turbine or even changing the washing
machine that requires less power.

As mentioned earlier, there are numerous benefits for implementing these solutions including
payback, possible publicity, sales created, awareness to both guests and staff, lower electrical
price in the long-run and the conservation of the environment.

Most importantly, Evason can be the leading eco-friendly hotel in the eco-tourism industry, as
other hotels will also follow the footsteps into creating a more sustainable environment.
