Alisa Permessur December 1, 2014 Modern Technology.. Good or Bad?
A journey of a thousand sites begins with a single click. Over the
years, technology has changed from pulp to pop. Technology has enhanced the way we look at the world. We used to wonder how the world was beyond time. Now with the use of science, we can now unravel the mystery of the past. Everyone has two sides, and so does technology. The debate whether technology is good or bad still goes on. Despite accusations, I believe that technology is good. About 2.5 million years ago, humans made the first tools from stone, wood, antlers, and bones. Humans discovered these tools could carve any material into shapes. 1-2 million years ago, humans discovered fire. It became easier for hunters because they sharpened their tools. From the 7th to the 15th century, windmills were constructed in eastern Iran and western Afghanistan. In 1094, a Buddhist monk named Su Song invented the tower clock in China. The clock tower stands for thirty feet high, and is designed to reveal the movement of the stars and the hours of the day. From 1698 to 1702,Thomas Savory designed the worlds first steam pump. It was designed with no piston, but it relies on the power of a vacuum. In the years of 1774 to 1800, John Wilkonson invented a machine, powered by a water wheel, which can drill extroadinary through the length of a cast-iron cylinder to create the barrel of a cannon. From 1837 to 1851, people became aware of cast-iron architecture. The public was inventing objects that contained glass, iron, and fabric. Thus, history of technology can speak for itself. Over the years, technology has enhance the methods of transportation and communication. Before, it was challenging to send mail internationally. However, with our smartphones and computers, we can stay connected to our family and friends across the world. The science of technology has created a whole new system of transporting goods and people from one place to another. The use of technology has cut distance between our loved ones. Because of the enhancement of technology, we have new systems of education needed. Children of all ages can use an app to learn how to read, write, and spell. Schools are embracing technological advances as a way to
improve the learning of every child on different curriculum levels. On a
2012 Pew Internet Project survey shows 75% of 2,500 teachers agreed that the internet and mechanics have a positive impact on research skills. Technology has also allowed children with disabilities are now able to use technology to overcome struggles they face with reading and writing. Despite my claims about the pleasant side of technology, technology has its rotten side. Technology has harmed the environment and natures beautiful creatures. Oils and fumes from vehicles and factories caused air and water contain pollution causing the life span of animals and plants to shorten. According to research, a majority of people does not know that the chemical called fluorocarbons, are used in refrigererators contribute to global warming. Children these days are spending way too much time on social media, not doing their work, and socializing friends and family. According to Dr. David Volpi, who is a specialist in sleep and snoring problems, describes technology causes fatigue, stress, and depression in children and teens. Depression can be caused by mostly cyber bullying. Cyber bullying has been a major issue concerning the majority of cyber bullying victims is young adults. Cyber bullying can cause the worst scenarios to young adults that could harm their bright future, and their everyday life. Texting while driving has become a dangerous pastime in the U.S. According to research, 81% Americans admit to texting while driving, while the other 20% of accidents are caused by this pastime. In 2011, at least 23% of auto collision involving cell phones thats 1.3 million crashes. Five seconds is the minimal amount of time the drivers attention is being taken away from the road. In those five seconds, anything could happen. In brief, technology has it twists and turns, but we cannot help it. Many people have faulted technology, but without technology, we
would not have jobs or a roof over our heads. Everywhere we go
technology have become a part of our lives. We, as human beings, have been changing. Because of technology, our lives our evolving in the good and bad ways.
