To Whom It May Concern:

Re: Mary Stang

It is a pleasure to write a letter of recommendation for Mary. I was her university supervisor
during her special education student teaching. Prior to working with student teachers, I was a
special education supervisor and then principal of two special schools serving disabled
students in the Des Moines Schools.
Mary completed her special education student teaching placement at Crossroads Elementary
School in West Des Moines, Iowa. She was in a resource program that served all grades and
provided very focused instruction on reading, math and writing. In addition, support was
provided for some students with social and behavior issues. There was diversity in the student
population and also in schools where she did practicums leading up to student teaching.
I really enjoyed working with Mary. She planned well and was always well organized. She
connected with the students and they responded very well to her. Her experience provided
great opportunity for her to refine her skills in direct instruction with small groups. I was
impressed by her ability to assess student understanding and to adjust instruction based on
that assessment. Mary also demonstrated skill in managing student behavior and in keeping
students engaged.
Marys placement gave her the opportunity to learn how a resource program gets organized
and how scheduling is done at the beginning of a school year. She also was involved in progress
monitoring, initial and review staffings, designing behavior interventions, and IEP conferences.
Mary had the opportunity to work with one of the most organized and instructionally focused
resource teachers that Ive had the chance to work with.
Mary will be very successful as a teacher and she will be an asset to any school community. She
has a history of leadership, academic achievement and an array of cultural experiences. You will
enjoy meeting her.
