9. Learning Environment (LO 2.8 & 2.

9) (APS 8 & 9)
TWS Standard
The teacher plans for a structured, positive learning environment where students feel safe and
valued as contributing members of a learning community.

Task
Create a plan and explanation for how you will create a positive, safe learning environment
including the behavioral expectations, consequences and rewards as well as non-instructional
routines and procedures.

Prompt
A. Classroom Management:
Describe and explain activities that you will implement to create a positive climate
where students will feel like valued members of a learning community.
In my classroom I will implement the idea of a wizard wall. The wizard wall would be
used to post questions that students had during a lesson that may have been off topic some, or
we did not get time too. Having them post them on this wall will allow them to feel like their
voices have been heard. At the end of the week I will a lot a time frame to answer the
questions using my knowledge or having the students split up and use the Internet to gain
knowledge. If they were split up, I would have them write an exit slip about their findings and
share them with the class on Monday. I will also have a treasure box, fellow peers will use
this box for anonymous or non-anonymous complaints about bullying/harassment, and
suggestions students may have about something we are discussing in class. Lastly, an
important teaching tool I would implement in my classroom would be morning meeting.
Students would meet every morning and I would let around 4 students (drawn randomly and
never twice in one week) share something interesting to the class. During this time everyone
will be said hello or good morning too. This creates positivity in the classroom and shows my
students that I believe that everyone matters and are of value in my classroom.
List the 3-5 behavioral expectations or rules for all students in your classroom.
1. Students will be expected to raise their hand when answering a question or asking a question
during a lesson plan. I feel this rule is important to have because everyone needs a fair chance in
answering a question/asking a question, and if we allow blurting out answers students will not be
able to have that opportunity.
2. Students will be expected to follow verbal and non-verbal directions to the best of their
abilities. I will expect that during an activity that student listen/read first, so they know what to do
(pencils down) then preform a task or an activity to the best of their ability. Doing your best
work promotes confidence in a classroom for the student and allows the teacher to gain where
that students performance falls in an assessment more clearly.
3. Students will know the appropriate times to have side or non-academic conversations with
peer, and at what tone those conversations should be. For example: during independent reading,
students will be expected to remain quiet, but during centers students will be expected to talk with
one another at an appropriate inside voice. This allows all students to be able to focus during
times of instruction yet still have a chance to develop socially with their peers during times of
free play or centers.
4. Students will be expected to only say kind words to one another. I will implement the saying
If you do not have anything nice to say do not say anything at all. I will not tolerate clicks or
bullying between classmates. Everyone in my class will be expected to treat others with respect

and kindness that they would want to be treated with.

List the hierarchy of consequences that you will follow when infractions of the rules
occur in the classroom.
First Offence: I love the idea of a card system, if at any time a child acts up or breaks a rule I
will simply without calling him or her out place a card into their name slot. The cards will be
labeled and the students will know what card means what rule. When they see me place a card in
their name slot they know that they are breaking that rule and that is a non-verbal warning.
Second Offence: For example during the day they have received multiple cards for the
misbehavior or acting out during instruction, and it has been a constant problem over the last
couple of days. They will not receive any stickers they can use later in their data notebooks
(explained below.) They will also receive a note home stating that we had a problem with this
(state in note) and I will have them sign a statement on the same form stating they will work on
their specific disruptive behavior more tomorrow. I will also ask them how they are going to
work on it, and write that below on the form. This form will have to be signed by their parents.
Third offence: If the child continues to act up with the same disruptive behavior after I have sent
home a parent letter I will then call the parent to discuss the behavioral issue after school. I will
give examples and ask if the parent would be willing to work together to maintain or eliminate
this issue. I will ask for the parents to have a discussion with their child about the behavior and
the ways they signed they would work on to improve it.
Fourth offence: If after speaking with the parent about the childs behavior, and the child
continues to be disruptive. I would ask them to come in for a parent teacher conference and come
up with ideas that can be incorporated at home and at school, such as if the child behaves and
does not display disruptive behavior for the day they will be allowed to play video games, if not I
will send home a note to be signed and something they enjoy will be taken away not only at
school such as recess, but also at home. If the parent is not obliged to this I will then ask them if
they feel no recess, practice work, or exclusion from fun class activities such as parties would be
reasonable. I will ensure them that I want to work as a team to help the child be the best I know
they can be academically.
Fifth offence: The child will receive a write up that will go to the office and the parents will be
called in again to meet with me, guidance, and the principal of the school for further instruction
and intervention for the childs behavioral issues.
If the behavior is severe and will jeopardize the safety of the student and others I will skip to the
Fourth offence. I believe that the parents will need to know that the behavior is jeopardizing the
safety of other children and must be maintained and corrected in a quick and safe manor.
Ensuring I am again here to work with them on creating a solution to the issue to insure the best
possible outcome academically for their child. I will maintain communication with the family to
ensure progress is being made. I will also use different systems that will work in school and out
of school to monitor and manage behavioral issues.

List the types of intrinsic and extrinsic reinforcements that you will utilize in the
classroom. These positive and negative reinforcements should sustain or increase the
demonstration of appropriate behavior in the classroom. How will you recognize
students who follow the rules and routines to encourage appropriate behaviors?
Positive Extrinsic Reinforcement:
1. Data Notebooks: I love the idea of some sort of reward system. A good way to manage
this would be using a data notebook. Using the card system (placing behavior cards in the
name slots of children) I will give out one sticker to each child who behaved correctly, and
maybe even bonus stickers if they received positive behavior cards in their name slot. At the
beginning of the first 9weeks their data notebook will contain base 5 squares, towards the end

of the first 9 weeks and throughout the remainder of the year they the notebook will contain
base 10 squares. Once a row (5 or 10) has been filled up with stickers they will get to pick out
a reward they want during shopping time every morning after morning meeting. They will
be able to choose from options such as: stinky feet: while at your desk you cannot wear your
shoes when doing work, lunch with a buddy, free homework pass: wont have to do one page
(days worth) of their homework packet for the week. ECT. This is one way I will
acknowledge students who are doing the right thing without calling the negative behavior out.
2. Student of the Week: I would take a picture of a student who showed exceptional
behavior for that week and give them a coupon or a surprise/reward of some sort out of the
surprise/reward drawer. They would be able to choose their prize.
Intrinsic Positive Reinforcement:
1. Verbal Cues: I would do is simple say things like I like the say (students name) is do
(action). This will bring attention to the good behavior and create a positive reinforcement to
the student preforming the good behavior. I would never call attention to a bad behavior of a
child.
2. Non-Verbal Cues: Smile, thumbs up, pat on the shoulder or back, picture on the super star
chart ECT.
Extrinsic Negative Reinforcement:
1. Silent Lunch: I would take a privilege away that they would receive by doing good
behavior such as during lunch students are allowed to have conversations with one another. A
negative reinforcement would be to make that student have a silent lunch away from or with
their fellow peers. They would not be able to talk to anyone until I they explained to me why
they were having to eat silently and what they were going to do to improve their behavior,
then they would be able to resume talking.
2. Walking laps: Children love playing with others during recess, but if the child is
continually disrupting class by talking with their peers I would have them walk laps around
the playground the first 5-10 minutes of recess.
Intrinsic Negative Reinforcements:
1. Pulling a child aside: I would pull a child aside, one-on-one, during recess, or centers
(something they enjoy) and discuss the behavior they displayed, why it was not appropriate,
and that I will not have it in my classroom. Once they have told me they are not going to do
the behavior anymore or told me how they were going to refrain from displaying such
behavior they were free to go back to recess or centers.
2. Non-Verbal Cues: Because I believe that you should never bring attention to negative
behavior, I would instead look at the student till he or she notices me and stops doing what
they are doing, or I would shake my head no to them. If the whole class is being disruptive I
will remain silent until the disruption is corrected. I will look at individuals who remain
talking until everyone is silent and ready to learn.
B. Non-Instructional Routines and Procedures
Describe non-instructional routines and procedures that will ensure your classroom
runs safely (i.e. you are providing appropriate supervision) and smoothly.
1. I will began class with letting each student in with a hug if they are coming in from another
classroom etc. It will then be expected of them to read the morning message and do as it says and
copy their homework into their agendas quietly. After that I will call morning meeting and
everyone will sit on the carpet, during that time I will do lunch plans and attendance. The students

will give lunch plans verbally to me as I go by a checklist. They will say choice 1, choice 2, lunch
and I will mark it off on a check list. I will then tally up the results and write on dry erase paddles
the number of students who choose choice one and the number who choose choice two, then
during lunch use those paddles to help me organize line up for lunch. (One child holds up a
paddle and the children who chose that choice line up behind him or her) When I take lunch plans
I will review my check list and if I did not get a response I will say Are you here? and look
around to see if they are or not and mark on my check list A, so that I can later go into the
system during morning work and do role.
2. I love the folder system. Each child will have a cubbies (younger grades) and older will just
have a hanger for their book bag. The folder will be put in their cubbies or on their desks for
collection at the beginning of class. In the folder one side will say: stay at home the other will say
return to school. I will place homework and forms that need to be signed in the return to school
side of the folder. I will place all other forms or other student work on the other side of the folder
to stay at home. This is how I will distribute homework and papers that need to be signed by a
parent. Folders will be looked at every day morning and papers collected.
3. Each student will be assigned a job. Some of the jobs will be line leader, paper passer outer,
king and queen of the day, classroom librarian, board eraser, word wall manager, pet caretaker,
materials manager, message taker, and door manager. Each job will be switched weekly for the
first couple of weeks then daily after students get a handle of the jobs responsibilities.
Line leader: this student will be able to lead the line all day
Classroom Librarian: this student will be in charge of collecting the books students have
checked out of the library and placing them into a bin once they are done with the book. He or
she will also be responsible for carrying this bin to the library, when the class goes there.
Word Wall Manager: this student will be responsible for keeping up with the words that are to
be placed on our word wall (given by me) during the day. At the end of the day I will hand them
the laminated words and they are to place them on the word wall.
Materials Manager: this student is responsible for making sure that each student has at least 5
sharpened pencils in their coloring tool box, or at their desk. If not, he or she will collect the
unsharpened pencils and place them in one cup and replace them with sharpened ones located in
another cup.
Door Manager: this student will be responsible for going to the door when someone knocks,
opening the door if it is someone who I have told them can come in such as a staff member, and if
they do not recognize them telling me, so that I will open the door.
Message Taker: This student will pick another student to go with them to take lunch orders or
breakfast orders to the lunchroom and messages to the office.
I will utilize assistance by asking them to help me with materialistic preparation for the next
week, utilizing them in small group lessons with no more than 5 students at a time during center
time while I am assessing students performance on certain curricular aspects. I will also need
him or her to help with monitoring the classroom for disturbances and correcting them as I have
advised her to do (my system stated above.) I will also have him or her in charge of collecting
papers that need to be returned to school from their folders and organizing them by my filing
system.
3. Pencil sharpening will be done daily after school by me and pencils will be placed in the
correct labeled containers for the material manager job student to manage distribution. Bathroom
breaks will be taken upon entering the classroom, before lunch, and after recess as a class. If I am
in a younger grade I will have a bathroom in my classroom and students will only be allowed to
use it unless an emergency during center time. If they have to use the bathroom and its an

emergency they will raise their hand and ask. If this becomes a disruption I will limit their
bathroom access unless it is an emergency. Students will be taught how to walk in the hallways in
a straight line starting at the begging of the year based on how the school has instructed us to
teach. They will be expected to perform this without disturbances. If there are disturbances my
assistant, or myself will have the student walk hand in hand alongside us until we arrive at our
destination. Transitions will be called on by rows (if students are residing on the carpet) or by
sections of desks to line up.
4. In case of an emergency situation, my students will be told, have demonstration from me, and
practiced the routines of which they are to follow. My assistant and I will remain calm during
these situations to ensure that our students remain calm. I will make sure that regular head checks
are taken throughout the day especially before and after leaving the classroom to ensure safety of
our students. The head checks will be done as a daily routine, not just in a case of an emergency.
