Oil Change For A Change

If you had one mission what would it be? Would it

be to amass as much wealth as possible, become famous
so everyone would remember your name, would it be to
accomplish everything on your bucket list before you die,
or would you try to create as much change for the good in
the world as possible?

Well, a group of men and women from the Glasgowarea Churches are doing just that. Through an organization
called One Mission Society they will be heading down
to Port Au Prince, Haiti to build houses in earthquakedestroyed areas.
In January 2010 an earthquake devastated Haiti so
One Mission Society responded by creating a plan to rebuild
and build new houses for people who cannot afford to pick
themselves up after this tragedy. Even five years after the
earthquake there are still plenty of people who need help.
One Mission Society has asked the questions: if you had an
opportunity would you do whatever God asked you to do,
would you go wherever God asked you to go, and would
give whatever God asked you to give?
In February 2015 Glasgow area churches will be
responding to those questions by sending 15 men and
women to help build houses, build relationships and bring
hope to people who need help.

But how do oil changes help Haiti? We want to help
you with your car care for the winter months ahead by
changing your oil, checking your fluids and tire pressure,
as well as a vacuum and window washing. So call or text
Seth Runner @ 263-2753 or Nate Ramsey @ 230-0993 for
your appointment for Saturday, December 6th from 9 a.m.

Montana Fish, Wildlife & Parks is seeking public

comment on more than 50 fishing contests proposed
statewide for the open-water season of 2015. Four of these
proposed contests are in Region 7.
Participants must comply with state fishing
regulations, including daily and possession limits. Most
contests require catch-and-release fishing and participants
in these contests may not keep any fish.
Applications for contests may be approved, denied or
approved with conditions. Conditions placed on contests
may help to minimize fish mortality, regulate harvest,
reduce user conflicts or require additional access site
maintenance when needed.
For information on the proposed contests visit FWPs
website at fwp.mt.gov, choose Public Notices then Fishing,
2015 Fishing Contests; or call 406-444-2449.
The comment deadline is Dec. 28 and may be mailed to
FWP Fisheries Division, P.O. Box 200701, Helena, MT,
59620-0701 or emailed to fwpfsh@mt.gov.

- 3 p.m. or stop by Zerbe Brothers that day and we will fit

you in. We will supply oil and filters as well as other fluids.
Your donation will assist in expenses for the trip and help
with materials for the houses we will build, as well as pay
salaries for the Haiti locals who are there to learn skills
and provide for their families. So we invite you to bring
your car and help make a change in Haiti.

Six hurdles small retailers

face during the holiday season
by Wayne Gardella, SBAs Montana District Director
Locally-owned small retailers can earn 50 percent
or more of total annual sales during the critical holiday
shopping period between Black Friday and New Years
Day. The business choices made during this important
period can have direct effects on a small firms cash flow
for the entire year. The SBA surveyed several business
counselors from Small Business Development Centers
and SCORE to compile this list of the top six hurdles
small retailers face during the busy holiday shopping
season.
1. Lack of inventory control. Inventory control is
crucial for all small retailers, especially during
the busy holiday sales months. It is important
to remember that inventory equals profits, and
knowing how much product to order, when to order
it, and what items to order can make the difference
between having cash in the bank or aging inventory
on the shelves.
2. Hiring the wrong employees for critical positions.
There is a cost to hiring the wrong people for key
positions. Small firms tend to have less layers of
management between the owner and the employees,
therefore new hires must be able to perform with
less direct supervision and be motivated to get the
job done right the first time. Avoid this issue by
writing a detailed job description and training new
employees on how you want them to represent your
business.
3. Undercapitalization is a lump of coal no business
wants or needs. Cash flow is the life blood of all
small businesses. Cash flow allows a business to
make payroll, pay suppliers, and keep its doors
open. Business owners can immediately increase
cash flow by collecting accounts receivables in a
timely manner; not keeping too much cash tied
up in unnecessary inventory; and eliminating
unprofitable account relationships.
4. Not embracing online sales and social media. A
recent US Census Bureau report shows that more
than $75 billion in e-commerce sales were made
during the second quarter of 2014 a 5 percent
increase over the previous quarter. A 2013 study by
Forrester Research Inc. showed that by 2017 nearly
continued on next page

5. Not delaying the employee office party and social

events. It is sales crunch time from Black Friday
until New Years Day. Office parties can cause
distractions at a time when the business needs to
be especially productive. Too much food and drink
can not only cause a nasty hangover, but sidetrack
employee and managements focus. Consider
moving the company party until after New Years
Day and call it the annual thank-you event.
6. Innovation and creativity lost. Historically, locallyowned small retailers beat their big box competitors
by providing outstanding individualized customer
service. Black Friday creep has pushed large
retailers into flooding the market with lost leader
pricing on a wide array of holiday products. Small
retailers should take the offensive by selling creative
and innovative products that cannot be found at
the local mega mall. Create a unique customer
experience that will draw shoppers to travel outside
of their comfort zone and discover that out of the
ordinary shopping district with ten trendy stores,
not 100 traditional chain stores.
For more information on ways the SBA can assist your
small business this holiday season, visit www.sba.gov or
call the Montana District Office at 406-441-1081.

60 percent of all U.S. retail sales will involve the web.

As more consumers make holiday purchases using
the internet, it is imperative that small retailers
develop a retail web presence. Also, leverage
Twitter and Facebook to promote one-day sales
or plug special product lines and high inventoried
merchandise.

Seeking comments? Heres our comment: Git er done!

Have you driven across the Fort Peck Dam to the
spillway in the past few months? Those trucks hauling
gravel for the spillway project have about demolished
that stretch of road.

The Montana Department of Transportation (MDT)
would like to notify the public and seek comments on a
proposal to resurface approximately 7.4 miles of MT 24
east of Fort Peck in McCone and Valley counties.
The project begins just east of the Fort Peck Lake
spillway at reference post (RP) 52.2 and extends west
across Fort Peck Dam for approximately 7.4 miles ending
near the intersection with Galpin Road at reference post
59.6.

Proposed work includes milling the existing surface
where there is curb and gutter, applying a new overlay
throughout the project, and finishing with a seal and
cover (chip seal), upgraded pavement marking, and
signage. The purpose of the project is to extend the
service life of the highway and take a cost-effective
action to preserve and maintain the existing highway.

The project is tentatively scheduled for construction
in 2015, depending on completion of all project
development activities and availability of funding. No

new Right-of-Way or utility relocations will be needed.

District Administrator Shane Mintz at (406) 345-8212
