Special Education Teachers
Research shows that in 2012, there was a 6% chance of someone to get a job as a special
education teacher (Special Education Teachers). People interested in special education must
realize that children with special needs have a different understanding of things than regular
students do. Most special students with Autism use facts and pure knowledge to decide on
something instead of using emotions and experiences. Special education teachers also must know
that their students have individual needs and different learning disabilities and cannot just teach
them as a whole class but must also focus on individual students. Ellyn Sanna states that children
with an intellectual disability called Autism are easily amused with simple objects like record
players or puzzles, but a student with Aspergers Syndrome finds it difficult to use emotion
instead of logic for many situations like music or games (61-62). The question is, would anyone
not prepared to help individual students one at a time in a classroom of 20 be fit to be a special
education teacher?
The most important rule whether you are teaching special needs students or general
education children is patience (15 Important Things Every Special Ed Teacher Should Know).
This rule sets a standard knowledge for people wanting to become a special education teacher
because that person needs to understand that not every student is going to do something

immediately or understand something instantly, it takes time and a lot of patience. Patience is not
the only thing a special education requires though, a special education teacher must also be able
to respect a students emotions and thoughts. Teachers of emotionally disturbed youngsters
need to be sensitive to students feelings of anxiety, depression, and isolation (Special
Education Teacher Ellyn Sanna). Emotionally disturbed children often have normal
intelligence- but their disability may interfere with their ability to learn reading and other basic
academic skills. Some students might also have a tendency to annoy a special education teacher
but this is where the patience and tolerance comes into play because it would be wrong for the
teacher to show anger towards the child because the child does not understand what the teacher
may find annoying. It should be known, that as a teacher, a students success should come

Special needs children are very prone to not understand something right away and thats
expected, whats not expected is for a teacher not to teach them when they need it (Ellyn
Sanna 74). Any teacher should know that when a student needs something academically they are
entitled to help them in any way possible and put them on the route to success, and if the teacher
cant do that, they should probably pick another career. Special education teachers are supposed
to help every child in the class individually, in small group, or as a whole class, this is really
expected of every teacher. In special education classrooms there are usually an assistant, so to
speak, called a consultant; this persons job is to help the students on an emotional level as well
as help the teacher with their daily duties (Ellyn Sanna 35). Students with learning disabilities
need more than for a teacher to point and give instructions, they need help through their
frustrations and other emotional disabilities because if they are not helped, they may refuse to do

their work or may even show physical distress and anger. Even though a teacher should know
what to do in these situations, they should avoid it as much as possible.
