Haitians went through many hardships during the 18th and 19th century.

Haitians felt like it was

a time to stop slavery, because it was unnecessary. Toussaint Loverture felt like it was time to
show the white people that it was time to end slavery. The Haitian revolution started because this
man thought white people had too much power and felt like they were being oppressed. The
Haitian revolution was worth the bloodshed because slavery was really bad at that time so they
decided to fight for their independence.
The Haitian revolution was worth the bloodshed. This is because slavery was bad during
that time period. It had been a twelve-year struggle that they have now overcome. The Haitians
felt like it was time to make a group of people to go against the white people. They have been
enslaved for a long time. After the years have gone by a man named Toussaint Louverture had
enough of the slavery, so he formed a big group of slaves to fight against the white people. It was
during 1790s-1804 that they fought for their independence. It has been described as the largest
most successful slave rebellion of all time. It was a very complex revolution. There were about
30,000 black slaves freed, and the slave population was close to 500,000. They numbered 40,000
of the slaves. The reason why this happened is because they were tired of being enslaved by the
whites, they knew that they would outnumber the white people, and win the revolution so they
fought. They only people that were involved were the black slaves that thought that they were
going to win the fight. It ended with the slaves winning the fight and they being freed. This was
not surprising to me because they were living a horrible life compared to the white people; so the
Haitians fighting back is not shocking. I would like to get more in depth in the Haitian revolution
because of how interesting it is they were the only ones who fought against the white people.

There are multiple reasons why the Haitian revolution was worth the bloodshed. One
major is because they wanted independence. The slaves felt like they were being too controlled
by the white people. So, they went against them. In article WWW.blackpast.org it states
inspired by events in France, a number of Haitian-born revonlutionary movements emerged
simultniously. They used the French revolutions Declaration of the Rights Man as their
inspiration which gave the different colonies some independence at the local level. This
demonstrates that France gave the Haitians inspiration. Without France the slaves wouldnt have
thought about fighting the whites. They fought against them and gained their independence as
they wanted in the first place. Haiti was known as the first black republic in the world and the
second nation in the western hemisphere to win its independence from a European power.
Another reason why the Haitian revolution was worth the bloodshed is too free the
slaves. Toussaint Louverture was the leader of making the blacks unenslaved. He was the leader
of the fight. In the article from website WWW.blackpast.org states Led by former slave
Toussaint Loverture, the enslaved would act first, rebelling against the planters on August 21,
1791. By 1792 they controlled a third of the island. Despite aid from France, the area of the
colony held by the rebels grew as did the violence on both sides. Before the fighting ended
100,000 of the 500,000 blacks and 24,000 of the 40,000 whites were killed. This demonstrates
that Toussaint Louverture was helping free the slaves. He even expanded his journey, by
conquering their neighbor, Spanish colony which is called Dominican Republic. They did this
because too many of the black slaves didn't want to be slaves anymore. They helped out other
black slaves and gained freedom from the white people.
The Haitian revolution is related to the French revolution. The French revolution was
worth the bloodshed. Much like the Haitian Revolution, the French were trying to gain their

independence so the slaves could be free. This is because Haitians and the French felt like it was
a time for change. During the French revolution John Locke was a man like Toussaint
Louverture, he wanted to stop King Louis XVI because he was a horrible king. He felt like he
was king because god told him to be king and people followed him. But, John Locke felt like
God would not tell the king to be cruel but to treat people right; no one thought to go against the
king so when Locke came about it was very shocking to the peasants. So, this is similar to the
Haitian Revolution. The other slaves did not think of going against the whites until Toussaint
Louverture came about. If it wasnt for the French the Haitians would not have gained their
independence because they got the thought about having a revolution from them. This supports
my thesis because slavery and people suffering are two great reasons to start a revolution.
The Haitian revolution was worth the bloodshed because slavery was really bad at that
time so they decided to fight for their independence. Haitians felt like it was time to make a
group of people to go against the white people. It was much like the French revolution which
was also worth the bloodshed.
