Lesson: My Five Senses Book


Unit of Study: My Five Senses
Goal of Lesson (Common Core State Standards/Division of Early Childhood where appropriate)
CCSS ELA-Literacy RI.K1
Key Ideas and Details:
1. With prompting and support, ask and answer questions about key details in a text.

Objectives: Student will be able to answer questions about the key detail in the text.
Pre-Assessment:
One on one reading with a teacher, assistant, or aide. Assessment to be documented.
Post-Assessment:
Have children present their work in a large group, small group or one on one.
Materials:
Pens
Crayons
Lined paper
Guided reading books (My Five Senses #1 boy (up and across) and #2 girl (down))

Use of Technology: N/A

Differentiation:
UP: Children will be able to answer the question at the end of the book (#1). (What can you taste, smell, touch, hear, and
see?) They will create their own five senses book. Children will create one page for all five senses.
Sample will be provided.
ACROSS: Children will be able to answer the question at the end of the book (#1). (What can you taste, smell, touch,
hear, and see?) They will create their own five senses book. Children will create a page for one, two, three, four, or all of
the five senses.
Sample will be provided as well as teacher assistance for dictation if needed.

DOWN: Children will be able to answer the question at the end of the book (#2). (Draw a picture here that shows you
using one of your senses.)
Sample will be provided as well as teacher assistance for dictation if needed.

Seating Configuration/Use of Physical Space:


1) Student will begin on the rug to listen to the story and instructions of the guided reading activity.
2) Student will stand up and stretch out their body (Brain break)
3) Students will be directed to their assigned table (tables are numbers, children divided by level of understanding) for the
small group activity.
4) Back to the rug for wrap up.

Teaching roles and collaboration:


Teachers Role
1. Will assist individual with reading of book and creating of their own five senses book. (Table 1)
2. Create a sample.
3. Prepare and send home an activity book to continue reading at home.
4. Take pictures individual work.
5. Send invitation home for book presentation gala.
Assistants Role
1. Will set up table with the needed materials. (All three tables)
2. Will assist with individual with reading and answering question.
3. Will take dictation where needed. (Table 2)
4. Take pictures during individual work.
Aide Role
1. Assistant any student that needs assistance with drawing (Table 3)
2. Take pictures during individual work

Teacher will review rules of the rug and of the table.


Teacher will review instructions of guided reading activity.
Teachers will use positive narration to identity which students are doing good listening and following instructions.
Teachers will reward students with stickers and or first choice for free choice play (depending on number of
children.)

Have children help set up for Book Presentation Gala for parents by creating an invitation and decorating of space.

Lesson Presentation:
Estimated Time: 20 minutes
1. Introduction to lesson (5 minutes)
Teacher will outline Guided Reading lesson for today.
Good morning class today we will be creating our own Fives Senses Book. Before we go and create our books
let me re-read to you the book called My Five Senses by Alki
2. Read the book, My Five Senses by Alki (10 minutes)
Questions will vary depending on cooperation and classroom dynamics
3. Brain break (needed to keep focus and on task) (2 minutes)
4. Explain instructions for Guided Reading Lesson, show books and send children to their assigned table. (3 minutes)
Guided Practice/Active Involvement/Small group work/Independent Practice:
Estimated Time: 30 minutes
Children will read their own book, then answer the question or draw picture at the end of the book. (depending on book)
When independent work is done, children will transition back to rug.
(A song will be use to transition to the rug.)

***Those that need transition time will be given a countdown verbally and visually using a 5 minute hour glass than a 1
minute hour glass)***

Estimated Time:15 minutes
Today you were radical readers and we wrote about which is our favorite five sense.
Give each child a chance to share. (If they chose too)
Teacher will ensure to those that did not finish that time will be allotted later for completion.
Announce to the children that next week we will have a book presentation for their family and school members.

Extension:
1. Send letter home to parents to discuss topic of the senses.
2. Invite the parents for the book presentation gala.
3. Send supporting activity book home to continue exploration for the five senses and shared reading.
