Products/Performances:

Monitor groups playing together. Respectful communication skills will come out by the
way they help each other or tell each other what to do. Since we will have discussed what
working in a group and respecting each other looks like, I will expect students to remember
and out it into practice. If groups fail to participate respectfully, I can reserve the right to
take away one of their friend cards in the game.
What are some ways we can make friends? Explain.
What are some ways we could lose friends? Explain.
How can we keep friends just by how we talk? Show me how.
What is one way we can be disrespectful to other people? Why should we not do that?
No products will be collected.

SPONGE ACTIVITY

Prepare the classroom with drawing on board/instructions ready. Since you have a prep
before this, use it wisely.
Introduction
Time
I need everyone to put their heads on their desks and be very quiet for a
moment. Then, I want you to think of one word: Friend (is everybody thinking
about friend? No peeking). Now, without making a sound, take out your
health duotangs and turn to _________ page (check when in school during
3 minutes
prep). Make sure they have the t-chart in their duotangs. If not, give copies.
Tell them that today, we will be playing a board game called Face a Friend.
Then we will talk about what we have learned with the game.
Body
Time
1. Tell them how to play the game. Have the steps written on the
2:59 PM
board. Get one student to repeat each step as you go. Then have
student recite one by one steps. (because the game board will be
5 minutes
drawn on the board, you can exemplify a lot of the steps). Once you
start, it will become easier to understand. If you have any questions
during the game, you can ask me or Barb for help.

2.

Consider:

Consolidation of Learning
Feedback from Students
Feedback to Students
Transition to Next Lesson

Get students to give you criteria on how they will respect the
people in their group and how they will play. If they do not play
respectfully, you reserve the right to take on of their friend cards
away and give it to someone else in the room. Once a sufficient list
has been compiled, divide students into groups and hand out the
game board (pre-organized for best use of time management.
3. After game is done, get students to quietly pack up their games and
bring them to the front. Then they may return to their desks. Ask
them some questions. What is one way we can make friends? Why is
that a good way? Give me an example. What are some ways we can
lose friends?
Closure
By show of hands (five to one), did this game help you realize some things
about respecting other people and making friends? Give me a five if you
learned a lot of new things, a four if you knew some things and learned some
new ones, a three if you didnt mind but didnt learn, and a one if you hated
the game and never want to make friends again.
