Model that Muscle

Introduction:
Lets establish some standards!
Through the completion of this assignment, you will be working
toward certain applications of the following standards. I have
included three of the Colorado state life science standards. The
bolded areas are things that you will be directly applying in your
project and will help you give an overall idea of how the standard
applies to this subject, to science, and to life! Using all three
standards, I have created a learning target for your project. I have
also included one literacy standard, one numeracy standard, and
one democracy standard, as these are all important areas that we should work at every day in
order to become well-rounded citizens. Each of these also have correlating objectives. Please
dont regard them as strict instructions but as helpful guidelines as you create your project and
apply Anatomy and Physiology to other areas of your life.
State Life Science Standards:
2. 4. c. Explain how carbon compounds are gradually oxidized to provide energy in
the form of adenosine triphosphate (ATP), which drives many chemical
reactions in the cell
2.5. c. Diagram the cell membrane schematically, and highlight receptor
proteins as targets of hormones, neurotransmitters, or drugs that serve as active
links between intra and extracellular environments.
2.6. a. Discuss how two or more body systems interact to promote health for the
whole organism
Objective: Students will be able to identify how muscles receive ATP through the
muscle cell membrane, use it to drive the chemical reactions within the cells, and
identify how the muscle interacts with the circulatory and nervous systems to carry
out contractions BY completing the muscle model and presentation activity.

Numeracy Standard:
1.2 Understand and apply algebraic and geometric concepts and techniques
Objective: Students will be able to apply geometric and geometric concepts and techniques by
provide a brief written description or visual representation of scale as it pertains to levels of
organization within the muscle.
Literacy:
1.5 Employ standard English language properly and fluently in reading, writing, speaking, and
listening
Objective: Students will be able to employ standard English language properly and fluently in
reading, writing, speaking, and listening by working with a partner to create a muscle model
and presentation and then presenting their work to the class.
Democracy:
2.10 Demonstrate intellectual curiosity & 2.39 Cooperate for a common Purpose
Students will be able to demonstrate intellectual curiosity and cooperate for a common
purpose by working in pairs to create a muscle model and presentation for the purpose of
developing creativity, innovation, and collaboration skills.

Now, to get down to it!

Instructions:
You and a partner will work together to
create a model of skeletal muscle gross
anatomy and a presentation on its function!
You will decide what kind of materials you
would like to use for the model and the
presentation. You will have two weeks to
explore research, study class materials, and
look for interesting facts all about muscle to compile into a unique and interesting project! At
the end of two weeks, you and your partner will take five to ten minutes to present your work
to the class. Feel free to be as creative as possible!!

Your final project must include the following elements:

A labelled model of the muscle that resembles figure 7-1 included on the next page which
can also be found on page 179 of your book.
Include a brief written description for everything you label and attach it to your model or
connect them all together to make a cohesive essay-like description to accompany your
model.
A presentation (poster board, PowerPoint, Prezi, or any other form of presentation you
choose).
In your presentation, include the process of contraction at the level of the sarcomere,
including all relevant terms identified in class.
Include in your presentation a unique story about muscles and their function in real life
(think of sports, flexibility, energy requirements it can be specific or broad! This can
really be anything you want that is relatable to the muscle unit!).
Plan on taking five to ten minutes to present your work and your findings to the class!
Refer to the attached rubric for scoring.
Get creative and enjoy learning about your life!
