TED talk:
30-day challenges

Activity/Procedure/Stage

Interaction

Pre-Stage:
Look at the plans in your handouts. Are
T-Ss
they big plans or small plans?
We are going to watch a Ted talk on how
small plans in 30 days can change our
life. The title of the talk is: try something
new in 30 days.
Have you watched a TED talk before? (If
SS raise hands, let them share a bit about SS-T-SS
what they watched, in what language,
and how they felt.)
Listening to a TED talk is challenging; so
don’t be upset if you cannot understand
every word.
During Stage:
T gives Ss handouts.
T helps SS preview some important new T-SS
words in the talk.
T divides the listening into small parts.
(Every part lasts no longer than 25
seconds.)
T asks SS to preview the questions before SS-SS
playing each part.

feedback: filled handouts, peer oral
feedback in discussions & T written
feedback on handouts.
Materials: Textbook, Grammar book, handouts, markers

Anticipated Problems & Suggested Solutions:
Beginner level SS might have trouble keeping up with the speaker. So I will show SS the
English subtitles. The talk will be divided into 6 mini parts, so SS won’t have a cognitive
overload in deciphering the meaning. Giving SS one to two questions to focus on before
listening also helps.
Contingency Plans (what you will do if you finish early, etc.):
If we finish early, I could ask SS to write one specific 30-day challenge related to their
English learning experience. They could come up with plans like “I will read one English
article every day”.
