Client Problem Statement

Design, fabricate and test a mock-up of a hybrid
solid rocket/ramjet engine. Students will search
the literature to see what has been done
previously, then come up with a design to
combine a solid rocket motor with a ramjet
engine. A movable nose cone should be
incorporated as well as a separation system to
prevent the solid fuel from affecting the ramjet
fuel injection system.
-Dr. Crepeau Design Proposal

Stakeholders
Design might be of interest to the Department of
Defense as a cheap and effective cruise missile
motor.
The design shouldnt be limited to just a cruise
missile. The engine could also be implemented onto
an aircraft.
Potential Stakeholders: NASA, Boeing, SpaceX,
Sierra Nevada, Blue Origin.

Background
The idea of an integrated rocket ramjet has been
around since the 1950s.
Navy research and development produced a
working prototypes in the 1960s.

Parallel Rocket Ramjet

Uses liquid fueled rockets in intake to pressurize

combustion chamber for ramjet operation at M0

Uses separate combustion chambers and nozzle

paths for both fuels

Staged Motor

Has a solid rocket motor that separates from

ramjet engine when fuel is burned out

Intake cone on Black Bird engine is adjustable for
different speeds and atmospheric conditions,
much like our idea for the IRR.

Specific Impulse
Specific impulse is the
measure of thrust efficiency

This plot describes the

efficiency and capability of
different engines relative to the
Mach number
We would like to be sitting
within this range.

Revised Problem Statement

Focus: actuated intake system and control surfaces

Proof of concept for an intake system with actuated

control surfaces to optimize shock behavior and
effectively transition from rocket to ramjet
propulsion mode.

Clients Needs

Solid Rocket phase accelerates system to Mach-3

Smooth transition to ramjet phase
Actuated control surfaces: intakes and port covers
Minimal drop-off parts
Mach 3+ cruise speed

Objectives
Show proof of concept through models and simulation.

Design adjustable intake system for dynamic internal and

external flow conditions
Develop analytical program to optimize aerodynamic and
exergetic properties of intake
CFD analysis of internal and external flow characteristics of
intake system

Build scale model for wind-tunnel testing to validate

analytical and computational analyses.
Build interactive model and or simulation for expo
presentations.

Ideas and Decisions

House of Quality has been produced.
Compares Needs and Metrics
Results show emphasis on:
Control system for intake: pressure recovery
Efficiency at varying altitudes
Improving range of flight
Not as important:
Payload sizing
Weight of system

Design Specifications

Isp(ramjet) = 2,000 sec

Ability to carry payload (dependent on app.)
Transition at Mach 3
Control system to optimize inlet flow conditions
- Pressure Recovery
Maximum altitude of 80,000 ft
