Discussion Directions
**Absent for the discussion? See special directions at the end of this document (p.4)**

Great job in class today! Some voices I heard for the very first time all year (in a class discussion)!
[Depending on how we left things in class, we may be continuing the discussion next class]
Assignment: Every student must post a minimum of two times to the sum-up discussion board. In
total, your posts must reach the minimum length requirement of eight lines of writing (or you could
break that into three postings of three lines each, etc.). This is bare minimum.
Be sure to read your classmates postings. (You might want to, if you are able, to post once, then return
later to see what activity has happened since before making your second post.)
[*Please be advised that a line is counted as your final post appears, and NOT as it appears in the smaller text-box as
you type it. If your finished post is short than youd thought it was, post again.]

Postings will be graded on quantity, quality, and originality.

This

is your time to:

Respond to a prompt that we did not get to cover in class today
Say anything you didn't have the chance to say in class
Solidify a point you were trying to get across
Counter or question anything said by a classmate
Share a new realization / reflection / point of view on a topic weve discussed
Sum up your closing thoughts

This is a sum-up to the Socratic Seminar as a whole your posts may respond to what
was or was not said in class, or to what is said on the discussion board.

[People who did not speak, or who only spoke in the last 10-15 minutes of class: while this will not
make up for not speaking in class, you really do need to take this opportunity to redeem yourselves. This
is not an equivalent to speaking in class, but doing well here might help to compensate for what did not
happen in class, in terms of demonstrating knowledge.]
While this is on the internet, it is an assignment, and is not anonymous please be mindful of spelling,
grammar, and mechanics. i.e I not i and you not u and could have not could of. Courtesy also!

discussion this will NOT make up for that zero. However, a stellar
performance here may help to compensate.

expected to at least double the posting minimums required of
classmates.
lease keep writing academic, diplomatic, and grammatically correct.

Absent for the Socratic Seminar?

Here is what you do
Like your classmates, turn in the typed prep work assignment with the required number of thesis
statements and selected quotes with page numbers.
For an excused absence you are excused from the class notes.
Like your classmates, you will join in the Post Socratic Seminar Sum-up on turnitin.com. [See directions
above]. You are expected to post meaningfully to the discussion a minimum of three times. With a total
minimum of 12 lines of writing.
To make up for missing the discussion: Select two of the seminar. prompts and type (in Times New

the topic and explain your reasoning with specific evidence (CDs) and your Commentary.
** If your absence is a cut, no work will be accepted.
