POEMS

for the

SPIRIT

2nd Edition

Original poems by Raymond J. Geraths Edited by Nolan A. Geraths

INTRODUCTION
My father was a poet. I discovered his writings in the last six years of his life. He started his poetry in 1949 and then wrote poems throughout his long life. All of these poems are original, written by my father. In addition to these poems we found 3 epic poems. We plan to publish these poems in the near future. I edited his poems because he is no longer around. He died in winter of 2004. I did not know of all his poems, and I believe it was his spirit that guided me to have these poems published. I hope you enjoy reading his poems as much I do. Nolan Geraths

TRUTH* Stradivarius chose a tree Sturdy as an oak And before chopping it down you see Thus to it he spoke: “Oh, violin material don’t you cry You’ve reason to rejoice Like the sorrowful Savior you must die Before the world will hear your voice And through time it will come about You will gain in quality Until all the world will seek you out And listen attentively” _________ *This poem, Truth, is the first poem in A Celebration of Poets, The International Library of Poetry, 1998.

TRINITY Our spiritual strength In breadth and length We proudly boast In Father, Son, and Holy Ghost In Faith, Hope, and Charity They are defined in clarity Power, wisdom, and Love Showered down from above Three in one Divided—none One in Three United completely

MARRIAGE* You’ve heard the adage daring Of the sage wise and bold? Sorrow in halved by sharing While joy is make two-fold But have you heard the one about True love as pure as gold? When shared with God, without a doubt Bears fruit a hundredfold ________ *This poem, Marriage, appears in America at the Millennium: The Best Poems and Poets of the 20th Century, by The International of Library of Poetry, 2000

PARADISE Heaven is---a place where there is: No unruly pride No lust can abide No gluttony or greed No envy can breed No covetous or jealousy No sloth to make time a fallacy No angry outburst or fear No cowering slave, far not near No body or soul No impurity to stain our goal No illness, stress or pain No worries about the brain No misfortune, loss, or tears No good thing wanting through the years No harmful deeds or woes No hateful thoughts, as joy grows No malicious sin or death No worries with every breath No gloom harm can bring No darkness---AND everything

THE GOOD SOIL Oh, Lord, Creator of all things good Teach us to live the way we should Make of us the good soil In humility and patience to toil Within us, let you take a good root And blossom into glorious fruit

WHO* Who started questions? Who started suggestions? Who said “Let their be light”? Who fought with all His might? Who created heaven and earth? Who gave all life its births? Who searched for the lost sheep? Who comforted those that weep? Who made the proud humble? Who quieted those that grumble? Who wiped the tears away? Who make the sad gay? Who will remove all the pain? And restore comfort again? Filled our hearts with love Grace and blessing from above Who will make things right? Fill the darkness with light Fill the skies with brilliant stars Create planets like Jupiter and Mars Who made the solar system? All the planets and list them? As His own to rule and guide Nothing good did He hide When all was said and done Everything did smoothly run Then friction did set in Who called it grievous sin? Run your course don’t delay I have planned a happier day When all things will be made anew All skies will be bright and blue Do your harm but don’t forget In the end you will regret All your kingdom will fall All your plans that shall stall

________ *This poem, Who, appears in Waves of Wonder, The International Library of Poetry, 2002

THE LORD WILL PROVIDE When grass is dry and we need rain The Lord will provide The showers to bloom the flowers again The Lord will provide Oh yes, the Lord will provide The Lord will provide He always has, He will again The Lord will provide When mothers pray for daily bread The Lord will provide Because the multitude He fed The Lord will provide Oh yes, the Lord will provide The Lord will provide He always has, He will again The Lord will provide When sorrow drowns out all our joy The Lord will provide The grace our troubles to destroy The Lord will provide Oh yes, the Lord will provide The Lord will provide He always has, He will again The Lord will provide When enemies press on every side The Lord will provide The strength to stem the wicked tide The Lord will provide Oh yes, the Lord will provide The Lord will provide He always has, He will again The Lord will provide

A SMILE PROVIDES GLADNESS To smile is to spread gladness To laugh is to make it grow To frown is pure madness To cry brings us low To resent makes a lonely heart To envy, drains our cup To hate, tears us apart To anger, burns us up To thirst and duty quaff To wear a wedding ring To live, to smile, to laugh To love: two of everything

TRUTH IS BEAUTY Truth is beauty, beauty is truth Wrote a poet long ago ‘Twas proven in Mary, proven in Ruth The Lord willed it so But in this modern age where youth Makes mockery the go Where can we find this hidden truth That makes true beauty glow? We found the answer this very day By altar’s candle light In gown and veil you knelt to pray Radiant beauty, truth, and might

A LIFE WITHIN A LIFE The glorious effects of prayer have shown That but to ask is to receive To adore, petition, thank, and to atone Shows that in Him we do believe God also had prayers for us That we might fill the bill And carry on without a fuss Doing His holy will First was His paternal prayer That His likeness in us might shine We bear His image everywhere A touch of the divine Then His maternal prayer of love To sanctify man and wife With constant guidance from above A life within a life Finally, His fraternal prayer That we might be His brother Free of worry and all care And have a heavenly mother Now, these prayers we heed Out destiny fulfill With every thought and word and deed Doing our Father’s will

SMILING THROUGH THE YEARS Your smile, badge of strength Keep renewing day by day Spreading cheer to every length Breadth and every which way Smiling through the beers Smiling through the cheers Smiling through the fears Smiling through the jeers Smiling through the leers Smiling through the tears Ever smiling though the years

FOR THE LOVE OF MY LIFE Heart of my heart, don’t you cry The storm will pass by and by Wind and rain, sun and dew Life and flowers do renew Trouble brews a bitter stew Sorrow adds some bitters too Time ferments the bitter to sweet Placing honey at our feet Floating clouds and passing rain Bring the sunshine again Brighter than you ever seen Shining on the fields so clean See your rainbow in the sky It cries in God’s eye He sent the gentle rain below Now He’s watching the green things grow As from the earth His glory rises In natures gay and green surprises To give us hope in the life to He Where will share His cool eternally In the names of the Father, Son and Holy Ghost We give credit for each victory we boast In this worldly strife For by Him, with Him, and in Him, we love life

REDEMPTION I love the way your love you show And how your dark eyes shine And how your face is all glows When you make yourself a clinging vine Love is truly the strangest thing We take in food to go on living But love is brought to its true ring By giving, giving, and giving I dare not ask you for your love It old spoils in the taking In silent admiration I’m sure of What words might turn to faking The depth of silence has no end And love can reach as far The way water reflections bend And beams reach us from a star We say the word “eternity” But said, it has an end. We say “I love you,” with amity And forever two souls blend Smile after smile brings unending joy As rain after rain sustains rivers Day after day makes time a toy As trees are made of slivers Darkness holds many shades And the light has rainbows In the light darkness fades In the dark clouds color glows So love mingles joy and sorrow Like the sunshine and the rain Today tears will blossom tomorrow Into joy again As rain sinks into the earth To refresh and liven it, so Tears fall to end the dearth Of parched hopes and woe

Water has a cleansing effect For body and for soul Bathing the body does reflect A soul’s cleansing as tears roll Oh, God’s generous gift of rain An endless cleansing game For joy and life to sustain And the wild clouds to tame Just over the hill and through the vale Our house in a meadow sits Right at the mouth of another dale Where a cool streams flits We’ve planted berry vines That grow up from either side In the center each entwines Under which we hide These extend down the hill Like a long high tunnel Reaching nearly to the rill With an outlet like a funnel Here we enter and go out And close a viny door Near the source of our daily trout Where we can always go back for more The lives give us shelter at night Find food throughout the day Now the berries are just right And fruit is on the way We’ll dine with trout and berry juice With dandelions for a salad Nature really has turned loose With a fruitful spring ballad Across the stream and up the hill Father built us a hut Cool and comfy and as still As quiet as a seed in a nut

There we’ll spend our marriage rise And start our life together Roam the valley day and night Through the clover and the heather Swimming, fishing, gaffing Catching food at play Singing, calling, laughing Willing our time away Gay as a bee all day long Gathering in the honey In the meadow with a song Every moment gay and sunny

SANCTIFICATION Shallow rivers roll Deep lakes are still Flowers worth the stole Are found high on a hill Fragrance is hidden Deep in the valley Fruit that is forbidden Is scattered nilly, nally Truth too is present In the beauty of a rose Where everything pleasant Grows and grows, and grows This wisdom and beauty Is protected by the thorns That faithfully fulfills their duty Making obnoxious the vine it adorns Precious is as precious does High grade crude is buried deep Coal fields lie where bees did buzz And abundant foliage did creep

THE GLORIOUS EFFECTS OF PRAYER The glorious effects of prayer have shown That but to ask is to receive To adore, petition, thank, atone Shows that in Him we do believe God also had prayers for us That we might fill the bill Carry on without a fuss Doing His holy will First was His paternal prayer That His likeness in us might shine We’d bear His image everywhere A touch of the divine Then His maternal prayer of love To sanctity man and wife With His constant guidance from above A life with a life Finally His fraternal prayer That we might be His brother Free of worry and of care And have a heavenly mother Now these prayers we heed Our destiny fulfill With every thought, and word, and deed Doing our Father’s will

FOR GAYLE I plucked a flower, it faded away I felt so sad and blue I planted a rose and day by day It grew, and grew, and grew It blossomed beautiful and red All fragments, sweet, and bright No longer sad and blue, instead I felt high as a kite My son said “I’m leaving you” It tore my soul apart Then I heard you say, “I do” It set up a Gayle in my heart
