ApprovalfortheIndiabasedNeutrinoObservatory(INO)ProjectinTheni,TamilNadu,islikelytobeannouncedsoon,
highlyplacedsourceshavetoldTheHindu.
TheINOisaRs1,600crorescienceprojectconceivednearly15yearsagoandcanputIndiaontheworldmapinthe
fieldofneutrinophysics.Itwillhouseamassiveirondetectorwhichwillbeplacedmorethanakilometrebelowthe
surfaceoftheearth.Withaweightofnearly50,000tonnes,itwillbethelargestparticledetectorintheworld,by
presentstandards.Scientistsfromnearly25institutionsacrossIndiaareinvolvedinthisproject,anditpromisesto
engageengineersandtheindustryasthemassivedetectorandtunnelwouldbebuiltupindigenously,thesourcesaid.
Infact,settingupthisobservatorywouldmeanarevivalofalostopportunityforIndiabecausein1965pioneering
IndianscientistsattheKolarGoldField(KGF)observatorywereamongthefirstintheworldtodiscovertracesofthe
atmosphericneutrinos.
WiththeclosureofKGFminesinthemid1990s,experimentalresearchonneutrinoscametoanendinIndia.
