RESPONSE FROM SANDRA GOSTANIAN (CHAIR SCAPE

)
MADERA COUNTY ADAPTED PHYSICAL EDUCATION
1..What assessments are out there for older medically fragile students?
[Sandra Gostanian] Limited “older” resources used/available…but use these:
KALMS-R (3-21); CARE-R (Birth-17); BOT-2 (4-21), but too rigorous for severe
population; APEASE-II is currently being revised as it was determined not to have
valid/reliable measures due to inconsistencies in percentile rank, etc.;
I believe there is a real need for an assessment tool written for the severe/fragile student.
2. Lesson plan ideas for medically fragile students?

[Sandra Gostanian] Three resources that I draw from besides collaboration (especially with
PTs and OTs) and Internet, in order of preference:
 Canales, L.K. & Lytle, R.K. (2011) Physical Activities for Young People With
Severe Disabilities, Champaign, IL: Human Kinetics

Rouse, P. (2004) Adapted Games & Activities, Champaign, IL: Human Kinetics

 Kasser, S.L. (1995) Inclusive Games, Movement Fun for Everyone! Champaign,
IL: Human Kinetics
3. Are there any data collection sheets that are simple and user friendly?

[Sandra Gostanian] Motor Skills Inventory
4. Are the standards we're using still the correct standards?(CCSESA/SEACO Curriculum Guide?

[Sandra Gostanian] Yes…PE/APE has not yet become a part of Common Core
5. Consulting issue: Are most districts still doing consulting? Are goals being written?

[Sandra Gostanian] Madera Co. Office of Education includes consultation in services. My
description on IEP Services page (approved by admin):
“Adapted Physical Education services will be a combination of Direct Service and
consultation/collaboration with site staff providing Physical Education instruction to
students.” If Consult only…goal is written if recommended by IEP Team
6. What is Specially Designed PE and how many hours are required?

[Sandra Gostanian] MCOE uses Specially Designed PE in self-contained Special Education
Classrooms at segregated sites or when students are not included in the GEPE instruction
7. Please summarize the main changes in APE in regards to the Guidelines for Adapted P.E.

[Sandra Gostanian] Updates of State and Federal laws required updates to APE Guidelines;
New guidelines provide excellent source for finding/knowing legal regulations/laws, reading
discussions, best practices. Excellent resource.
8. Do you have any new and innovative ideas for activities for APE and medically fragile kids in the pool?

[Sandra Gostanian] Only high school students have access to the swimming pool; medically
fragile students are at a separate, segregated site and therefore do not have access; excellent
means of movement without stress on joints; freedom in the water; wish it were more
accessible
