The Effects of the Preamble

Looking back at history, women have made great strides for equality and rights, but still
rights given to women are limited. Why is that? Even though rights are limited to women, the
Preamble has made more rights available by promoting the general welfare and securing the
blessings of liberty. The Preamble still has an impact on many things in society today and one of
them happens to be womens rights.
Overall meaning of The Preamble
According to www.kids.law.com, www.americanbar.org ,and
www.constitutioncenter.org , the Preambles meaning is to outline the framers general goals, to
help understand why the Constitution was written, and was also intended to introduce the
Constitution. Also, according to www.kids.law.com ,the Preamble explains reasons why the
Framers of the Constitution made our government a republic.
Deciphering the Preamble
As stated before, the Preamble is the introduction to the Constitution and was meant to
outline the general goals of the framers which was to ensure peace and a just government.
We the people of the United States, in order to form a more perfect union, establish justice,
insure domestic tranquility, provide for the common defense, promote the general welfare, and
secure the blessings of liberty to ourselves and our posterity, do ordain and establish this
Constitution for the United States of America. The first three words, We the people, means
the citizens of the United States. When the Preamble says in order to form a more perfect

union it is basically saying to make everything in our country as perfect as possible. The next
line, establish justice, means to make sure there is justice under the Constitution. When the line
insure domestic tranquility is stated, it is meaning or promising that everything in our country
will be peaceful. The next line is provide for the common defense which in other words means
give protection to everybody in our country. Promote the general welfare is something to
similar to the previous line, provide for the common defense, but instead is stating that citizens
are to be taken care of and are provided with things that are needed. The second to last line of
the Preamble says, and secure the blessings of liberty to ourselves and our posterity is saying
to make sure freedom and fairness continues for ourselves and all our children and their children
and every generation to come. The last line of the Preamble says, do ordain and establish this
Constitution for the United States of America. This last sentences meaning is to approve of and
begin the Constitution of the United States.

The Impact of the Preamble

There are many different ways to prove that the Preamble has left a big impact on society,
but one of the most important ways to prove the fact, is to address womens rights. According to
www.aclu.org, over time women have been prevented from making deeply personal choices in
their lives. There was a time where women did not have the option of taking birth control, when
women did not have the same educational and economic opportunities like men did, or when
women did not have a say in who they marry. Over centuries women have been limited to what
they can do and at times, had no rights. Many women were good for staying home and cooking,
and caring for their children, while men, took control of pretty much everything. Now, it is the
21st century, and women have had more career opportunities, economic opportunities, and rights
in general, than ever before. According to www.aclu.org, women were not given rights until the
late 1800s, but were still limited. Today there are still some limits to what women can do, but
not as many as in the past, so you can say women have come a long way. A quote by Malala
Yousafzai says, We cannot succeed when half of us are held back. Thanks to the Preamble,
women are able to do and say so many things that werent allowed until now. In the previous
paragraph, we decipher the Preamble, and there you were introduced to the lines: promote the
general welfare and and secure the blessings of liberty to ourselves and our posterity. These
two lines are very important key factors to womens rights today because not only did they help
get women the rights they deserved, but they opened up so many opportunities for them as well.

Conclusion
In conclusion, the Preamble still has an impact on many lives today in different ways and
continues to leave an impact. Even though some rights were and still are limited to women, the
Preamble has allowed women the rights that they rightfully deserve and that are equal to mens
rights. Over centuries of being told what to do and not having the upper hand, women finally do.:
Men and women have roles, their roles are different, but their rights are equal. This is a quote
by Harri Holken that has a true, important, and powerful message behind it: Everyone has their
different roles in the world, but all rights are equal.
