Editorial
ast October the European Taekwondo family reelected Mr
Athanasios Pragalos President of the European Taekwondo
Union ( ETU ). The successful reelection of Mr Athanasios Pragalos
at the ETU General Assembly was held in the beautiful city of Pafos
( Cyprus ) on the 5th October 2011.

Almost 75% of the European voters entrusted Mr Athanasios Pragalos to be for the fourth consecutive time President of the European Taekwondo Union ( ETU ). Mr Athanasios Pragalos really
managed during the 12 ( twelve ) years of his Presidency to provide successfully solutions to a
lot of serious problems which prompted the smooth functioning and development of the ETU.
The strong leadership, the sincere cooperation, the open mind and especially the good understanding that Mr Athanasios Pragalos has successfully displayed during his service as a President of the ETU was one of the reasons for his great success and majority election. Mr
Athanasios Pragalos received congratulations letter by the President of the World Taekwondo
Federation ( WTF ) Dr Chungwon Choue. Similar letters have been sent to Mr Pragalos and by
many sport personalities of the world and by many Presidents of National Taekwondo Federations / Associations members of the ETU.
Really I will never forget as a Chief Editor of the ETU Magazine, ( official Organ of the European
Taekwondo Union ) the sincere messages of the President of the ETU Mr Athanasios Pragalos,
which have been officially published many times in the ETU Magazine:
We have to keep reforming and working together. Together we fight, together we achieve. We
gathered here not to go backward, but to move forward. We must not stop here but we have
to keep moving forward .

The Message of
the ETU President
My wishes for the new year 2012 are even warmer
than the previous years
y wishes for the new year
are even more warmer
than the previous years, not only
because I feel great respect towards all of you, who believe in
human values that are developed through sports. The many
years of our cooperation have
made our relationship even
closer and has made us finally
one loving family.Year 2012 will
be unique due to the fact that
the world of sport will hold the
celebration of celebrations
where all social classes of the
world whether rich or poor will
come together. This celebration
is the Olympic Games which will
be hosted in one of the most
beautiful capitals of Europe,
London, United Kingdom.

I feel it is my duty and I am compelled to remind you of the

words of the president of the
WTF Dr Chungwon Choue
Taekwondo is the gift from
Korea to enhance the mind,
body and soul of the younger
generation of the World This
gift gives us the chance to show
our presence in this great celebration of 2012 in London, exceptionally in these difficult
times and the world crises.
The tasks and events of the
ETU have been productive in
the preparation of the young
people that fight for their country, or family, or teachers. The
many years of training in Taekwondo was the result of our

younger generation in arming

themselves with more power to
prepare themselves to tackle
the problems and decisions in
Life.It is not by luck that in Europe there are so many numbers of different sports and so
many choices for sports for men
and women, and Taekwondo is
the leader since more and more
of our young generation has
made Taekwondo their first
choice in sport. This is attributed
to the great training of not only
the body but of the mind that
Taekwondo offers.
The love we all have for Taekwondo has driven us to program and organize a series of
events, that in 2012 apart from
the Olympic Games will com-

prise the European Cadets

Championships, the European
Youth Championships and the
European Senior Championships in Manchester. I feel
that as long as you are there as
the heads of your countries you
are obliged and it is your duty to
continue and spread the traditions and values for the continuous wellness of mankind and
within the new ETU Executive
Board we will go forward. With
the opportunity of the upcoming
leap year and the 366 days to
follow, which come up every
four years, I wish that 2012 is a
good year for all of you.

The 2011 WTF World Taekwondo Championships have attracted a record number of

better serve humanity to

serve each other. This years
theme World Peace through
Taekwondo aims to stretch out
our hands to offer help and
hope to those in need around
the world in orphanages and
refugee camps. The beginnings
of these efforts can already be
seen
in
Thailand

have worked to bring the spirit
of taekwondo and Olympism to
youth in orphanages. It is my
hope that more work like this
can be done in other countries .

The 2011 General

Assembly of the ETU
Triumphant reelection of the ETU President
Mr Athanasios Pragalos
he General Assembly of the
European Taekwondo Union
( ETU ), which was held on the
5th October 2011 in the beautiful city of Pafos ( Cyprus ),
undoubtedly was the most historical, remarkable and successful General Assembly of the
ETU.

At the above Assembly, which

was held in a clear democratic
procedure of which 43 member
countries of the ETU took part,
Mr Athanasios Pragalos from
Greece has been reelected
triumphantly as President of the
ETU with 44 votes. Mr Metin
Sahin from Turkey, who was
candidate for the post of the
ETU President, received 14
votes.
It must be noted that the above
Assembly was attended by Mr
Corbin Min represented as an
official observer of the World
Taekwondo Federation ( WTF ).
During the Presidential campaign Mr Pragalos circulated the
following letter to all the National
Taekwondo Federations and to
all the members of the Executive Council of the ETU:
Dear friends, once again I have
the honor to ask your support
and help in strengthening Eu22

ETU

rope under my leadership. Only

with your support I can lead the
ETU into the future! With the
Olympic Games of London and
Rio de Janeiro ahead of us,
strong European leadership is
crucial. In this document I present my mission and plans for the
coming years. Now more than
ever Europe needs strong leadership to make sure that the
ETU remains its competitive and
leading position in the world.
Under my leadership I will protect Europes interests on a regional and global level.
Like in the past years with the
implementation of among other
things Poomsae, Junior and
Cadet Championships, innovation will be one of the key points
of my term as President. I will
seek financial support via the
European Union to finance a
new and inspirational Solidarity
Programme. In the near future.
I will present a proposal to the
Executive Council in which the
tasks and responsibilities of the
ETU Vice Presidents will be defined and tasks and responsibilities will be described .

Organizational
Plans of
Mr Pragalos
In the next term one of the first
things I want to realize is the full
adoption of the WTF Statutes as
ETU Statutes. In this process I
will work in close cooperation
with the WTF because I think
some additional provisions
could be of value for the quality
of the Statutes. In this respect, I
am thinking of proposing a
global Sanctions bylaw and
Elections bylaw.
In addition, I will propose to organize the General Assembly
annually in line with WTF. This
gives the Executive Council the

opportunity to be on an annual
basis accountable for the year
ended with regard to the followed policy as well as the financial position of ETU.
In close cooperation with the
General Secretariat I will present
to the Executive Council a proposal in which a variety of portfolios with specific tasks and
responsibilities are described for
the Vice Presidents. In addition,
I will appoint a Deputy Secretary
General and a Deputy General
Treasurer to assist the Presidium of ETU.

Close cooperation with other regional taekwondo unions will

give us the opportunity to explore partnerships which can
help our athletes in the future to
excel on the world stage. One of
the key points of my term will
therefore be the cooperation
with other regional unions. To
make sure that the communication with the WTF will improve,
quarterly meetings will be
arranged between WTF and
ETU.
The ETU working committees
will be further professionalized.

An important task lies in the

hands of the Chairman ( appointed by the ETU President )
as he is the person who will appoint the members of his Committee. Tasks and responsibilities
will be arranged between the
ETU President and the Chairman of the Committee. The
Chairman will be accountable
for the task that has been
arranged with the ETU President and has to file an annual
report to the Executive Council.
Finally, a tier system of membership fees will be introduced to
make sure the Member National

The ETU Championships

With regard to the entry fee of
ETU events, a fee per person
will be introduced instead of a
fee per team as is currently the
case. In the contract with the organizing Member National
Associations will be a nonnegotiable provision which
states that video replay will be
present during the Championship organized. In addition to
that, the Legislative Committee
will be asked to draft a standard
contract which can be adjusted
on the needs and wishes of ETU
and the organizing Member National Association.
Several Programmes
A new Solidarity and Educational Programme will be established. I will explore the
possibilities to get financial support for projects on this subject
via the several programmes of
the European Union. The aim of
the Solidarity Programme will be
to make sure that all ETU Member National Associations will be
able to develop themselves to a
high level of Taekwondo practice in order to qualify athletes
for the future Olympics.

Olympic Games of 2012

Will be held next August in London. Interesting
Interview with the Chairman of the British Taekwondo
Control Board Mr. Adrian Tranter
ext August all the Taekwondo competitors ( athletes ) who have been qualified
for the Olympic Games of London ( 2012 ) they are ready for
this great sport event of the
world, in which more than four
billion viewers ( TV spectators )
are expected from all the countries of the world.

London the capital of the United

Kingdom, the hosted city of the
Olympic Games of 2012 has organised successfully and the
Olympic Games of 1908 and of
the 1948.
The organisers with their big experience and with their excellent
sports installations in all the
cities of the United Kingdom,
they are ensuring the great success and of the Olympic Games
of 2012.
It must be noted that Taekwondo at the Olympic Games of
Seoul ( Korea ), Sydney ( Australia ), Athens ( Greece ) and
of Beijing ( China ) won the great
attention and appreciation of the
spectators and of the media by
calling it as Modern International Sport. Even though Taekwondo will be included once
again at the Olympic Games
with 4 categories instead of 8 as
accustomed, it will attract a
great number of audience.
The spectacular and dynamic
character of Taekwondo, guar26

antees definitely an event that

cannot be missed. Taekwondo
as a Modern International Sport
won the attention and appreciation of the spectators, compared to other sports at the
Olympic Games Sydney ( 2000 ),
Athens ( 2004 ) and of Beijing
( 2008 ). At this biggest sport
event will take part 128 Taekwondo athletes male and female.

The winners
2000 2008
At the Olympic Games of Sydney ( 2000 ) Asia won the first
place with 4 gold, 2 silver and 4
bronze medals: Korea won 3
gold and China 1. The rest gold
medals are for Greece ( 1 ), USA
( 1 ), Australia ( 1 ) and Cuba ( 1 ).
At the Olympic Games of
Athens ( 2004 ) Asia won
again the first place with 7
gold, 2 silver and 2 bronze
medals: Taipei won 2 gold,
Korea 2 gold, Thailand 1 gold
and Iran 1 gold. The rest gold
medal is for USA. Europe
won 4 silver medals with
Greece 2, France 1 and Turkey 1.
At the Olympic Games of
Beijing ( 2008 ) Asia won the first
place with 6 gold medals, 1
silver and 5 bronze medals.
America won the second
place with 2 gold medals, 3
silver, 5 bronze and Europe
the third with 4 silver medals
and 5 bronze medals. Africa
won the fourth place with 1
bronze medal, ( no medal for
Oceania ) .

Mr. Andrian Tranter

for the Olympic Games
of London 2012
The Chairmain of the British
Taekwondo Control Board Mr.
Adrian Tranter stated the following to the Chief Editor of the
ETU magazine Mr. Phivos Chris-

tou for the Olympic Games of

London 2012:
Having four qualification places
for London 2012 lets me enjoy
the European Qualification in a
different way to that of my colleagues on the ETU Executive
Council. They are obviously very
focused on achieving at least
one qualification place so as
they can be a part of the
Olympic Games in August.
It is a great spectacle to see the
joy and happiness of the players
and coaches when they get that
elusive ticket, but it is also very
special for the Presidents of
those countries and I thrilled to
see so many countries getting
the chance to come to London.
The Russian Taekwondo Union
and Mr Terekhov have done a
great job here in Kazan, its been
a pleasure to be here. Of

course, the expectation on the

Great Britain Team for success
is very high at home. I certainly
hope that we can live up to the
expectations. I am confident
that our athletes and staff will be
absolutely prepared and its certainly going to be a great competition.
This time I believe Europe will
secure more medals than in Beijing and I am hoping that of
course Great Britain will secure
a good proportion of them, as
home nation success is key to
our objectives.
My ETU colleagues are working
very hard to ensure Olympic
qualification here in Kazan,
though their work in ensuring
we stay as an Olympic sport is
at the core of their efforts.
Our unified approach to fairness

and fair play has been very obvious and we must thank our
WTF Referee Director Chakir
Chelbat and his team of referees for their dedication. I
firmly believe that WTF President Dr Choue continues to
lead us with a vision that will result in our being a core Olympic
sport for 2020, for that is the
biggest prize for all of us. Of
course we shall soon be welcoming all of the ETU family in
Manchester in May for the European Senior Championships.
We will I hope make your stay
with us very memorable and
give your athletes every opportunity to perform to the best of
their abilities.
I very much look forward to seeing everyone there and I wish to
all of them the very best of
luck.

The only European

Olympic Gold Medalist

The story of the Olympic Flame

began with the ancient Greeks
who, at the first Olympic
Games, kindled the Flame from
the suns rays and placed it in a
temple built to honor mythological goddess Hera, hoping to
decure her blessing for the upcoming competition.
The lighting of the Olympic
Flame from the rays of the sun
is a sacred tradition, dating
back to the first Olympic
Games in 776 B.C.

Awarded in 2000 to Michalis Mouroutsos

at the Olympic Games of Sydney
t the Olympic Games of
Seoul Korea ( 1996 ), of
Sydney Australia ( 2000 ), of
Athens Greece ( 2004 ) and of
Beijing China
( 2008 ) Europe won many silver and
bronze medals, but only one
gold medal. The only one gold
medal of Europe comes from
Michalis Mouroutsos from
Greece in category 58 kg at
the Olympic Games of Sydney
in 2000.

In the ancient times, the rekingling of the Flame every four

years symbolized the Olympic
truce, calling all people to lay
down their arms in the spirit of
friendly competition.
Each time we gather on the
same spot of Olympia, among
the ruins of the Temple of Hera,
we again rekindle the Olympic
spirit as the Flame bursts to life.

Europe is very optimistic for at

least another gold medal at the
Olympic Games of London next
August. The above European
Olympic gold medalist at a very
short interview with the Chief
Editor of the ETU Magazine Mr
Phivos Christou said the following:
I would like to wish all the best
and good luck to all the athletes
of Taekwondo who will compete
at the Olympic Games of London. I am very optimistic that
Europe at the Olympic Games
of London will have another one
gold medal

The tradition of the Flame was

revived at the 1928 Olympic
Games in Amsterdam, eight
years later.

The Olympic Flame

It symbolizes the very essence of
the Olympic Games. The Olympic Flame
began with the ancient Greeks.
he Olympic Flame is one of
the most recognizable and
sacred images of the Olympic
Movement and is enduring symbol of the Olympic ideals of
noble competition, friendship,
peace culture and education. It
symbolizes the very essence of
the Olympic Games.

From the day it is kindled in

Greece until it is extinguished,
signaling the end of the Olympic
Games, the sharing of the
Flame deeply touches everyone.
In ancient Greece fire symbolised the creation of the world,
as well as renewal and light. The
ancient Greeks explained the re-

sense of the fire on earth

through
the
MYTH
of
Prometheus, who stole fire from
the GODS to give to man.
Throughout the years the Torch
Relay has served as an emotional centerpiece to the start of
the Olympic Games.

The first modern Torch Relay

brought the Flame from
Olympia to the Olympic Stadium in Athens.

At the photograph the President of the International

Olympic Committee ( IOC ) Dr
Jacques Rogge holding the
Olympic Torch which was used
for the Olympic Games of
Athens ( 2004 ). It is worth
mentioning that Dr Jacques
Rogge has been serving the
Olympic Movement from the
position of the President of the
IOC since 2001.
