By the end of this section, you should be able to:
1.Identify the role of the LMS in ODL.
2.Use the main functions in the WOU LMS.

As an ODL you need the support of various

resources to help you progress.

That is the LMS.

ODL = a learning process or system in which the

teacher is separated geographically or in time
from his or her student.
Learning achieved via the implementation of
computer and electronic technology to connect
teacher and learner as when required, in either
real time (synchronous) or delayed time (
The LMS = a software package that allows the
management and delivery of content and
resources to students.

The LMS technology an integral part of teaching

and learning in ODL cos it is extremely flexible
in its customisation and its ability to support
multiple learning environments.
Most LMS are web-based and learners able to
access anytime and anywhere
LMS allow students self-service facilitating
registration for courses & providing access to
course materials.
Even can find virtual live classes and resourcesbooks & instructors.

Via LMS, learners able to read course materials,

complete assessments, quizzes and tests from
the convenience of their PC while contributing to
live discussion forums and chat sessions.
In ODL, the LMS provides a place:-

1. For learners expression.

2. To connect with other learners.

3. To dialogue with the tutor and Course Coordinator.
4. To seek mentoring and live help.
5. For content interaction among learners and/or tutor and Course
Coordinator. (CC)

The function of the WOU LMS - WawasanLearn

LMS in WOU = WawasanLearn

Sample question : Do you think 21 weeks is enough to
cover all the materials?

You are required to complete 2 tutor-marked

assignments (TMAs)
WawasanLearn is one avenue to submit these
You must submit TMAs online.

assign call number to all books and
other library materials. Except for
WOU course materials and vertical
file collection.

A call number is a sequence of letters and

Internet search startegies differs from OPAC search

engines and subject directories.

If you know the web address you go

directly there.
Just type the URL address, press enter,

Some of the most popular search engines are

Blogs offer alternative viewpoints on news
and other subjects.

Now go back to the topic you chose earlier.

Choose any three tools (meta search engine, DLs
or blogs) discussed above and locate info on the
topic Open Distance Education. Write down the
tools you used in the left-handed column and the
info in the right-hand column. Once you have
cmpleted your search, compare the results you
obtained with your course mates who used the
same tools.
