Winter Art Gallery Exhibit

Featured at Brukner Nature Center
Brukner Nature Center invites you to view their Winter Art
Gallery Exhibit Its About Wildlife. The exhibit showcases the
work of both adult and youth participants that have captured the
beauty of wildlife and their wild places. The exhibit will be open to
the public during Interpretive Center hours and will run through
Sunday, March 15.
A percentage of the sales of these works will support the mission
of Brukner Nature Center. FREE with paid admission to the building. The nature center is located at 5995 Horseshoe Bend Rd., Troy.

On Saturday, Feb. 7, Fields of Grace Worship Center will host a
Princess Ball at the Covington Eagles Hall from 6:30 til 8 p.m. This
event is for young ladies ages three and up.
Brad Hall, emcee, will provide music.
There will be a photo booth where the special young lady and her
escort can take pictures from the evening home with them.
Light refreshments will be served.
The Princess Ball is for dads, grandfathers, uncles, etc., to show
the special young lady or ladies in their lives a memorable, fun
evening.
There will be a $10 per family admittance fee.

Haiti Benefit Auction

Seeks Merchandise Donations
Five years ago last week, Haiti was hit with a major earthquake.
Cornerstone Dunkard Brethren Church organized a Benefit Auction
to raise funds to assist in recovery efforts and this will be their sixth
year to hold such an auction.
The mission of the Haiti Benefit Auction of Miami Valley is to
raise money for the needs of the Haitian people. One hundred percent of all the sale proceeds go to various missions that are Biblebased, Christ-centered, and work to directly serve the needs of
Haitian citizens. The missions involved are already established in
Haiti and have educational programs as well as medical services
But you cant have an auction without merchandise to sell.
Please consider donating new or slightly used, handmade or purchased items. Type of donations accepted are: Services rendered
(cater a meal, yard work, cleaning service, odd jobs, etc.), furniture,
sporting event tickets, new tools, coupons, handmade items, and
childrens toys. Contact: donations@haitiauction.org to donate
items.
This Benefit Auction will be held March 6 and 7 at the Darke
County Fairgrounds in Greenville. In addition to the general auction,
there will be a Childrens Auction and Silent Auction. Watch for
details!
Well over 300 people attended the 2014 auction, coming from
several surrounding states. Over 500 lots of merchandise were sold
and $48,000 was raised.

Again! Darke County musicians present a variety of musical styles in this hour of fun, entertainment,
and beautiful music.
This free concert for the community is scheduled for Sunday, Feb. 8, 3 p.m., at the First Presbyterian Church, 114 E. 4th St., Greenville.
Kim Bohler will play traditional celtic tunes on the flute with piano accompaniment. Paula Ulrich,
with Mike Hogg, will provide vocal selections that include Simple Song, The Prayer, and Just
a Closer Walk with Thee. Darrell Fryman will play a piano solo and then will join Terri Fryman in
a piano duet. Terri brings the sounds of the organ with a lively French composition. Topping off the
afternoon will be numbers by the Presby Trio, Don Lockhart, Jane Tester, and Terri Fryman, performing the bossa nova Desafinado, a gospel hymn medley, and then combining a foot-tapping
Tuxedo Junction and Take the A Train.
With performers leading, the audience is invited to join in the stirring When the Saints Go Marching In before everyone meets in the church social hall for refreshments following the concert.

FISH Banquet Held November 20

The Union Township FISH organization held their Annual
Meeting at the Milton-Union Senior Citizen's building on
November 20. The Union Township Council of Churches founded
this organization in October of 1971. It is made up of volunteers
whose basic philosophy is to help others. Their purpose is to get an
individual who has a need together with someone who wants to
help fill that need. The ancient Christian symbol of a fish was
adopted as its logo.
The food pantry is supplied through donations by individuals,
church and civic groups, food drives by scouts and school students,
etc. The last two years the Meijer Simply Give program has been a
tremendous help. Monetary donations from various sources provide JANET HESS & John Hutcheson were
assistance with various financial needs.

A catered meal was followed by the business meeting. Special recognition was given to Janet Hess and
John Hutcheson, who have been very active since the founding of the program. Each was given an
engraved crystal heart in appreciation for their 41 years of service. Carol Storer and Rev. Richard Martens
were elected to fill the Board of Trustees positions left vacant by Janet and John.
The program was an Open Forum to discuss questions and hear suggestions. A pleasant evening was
had by all, as this is an opportunity to actually get to know one another other than over the telephone.

The Newton FFA chapter hosted the Miami County FFA Parliamentary Procedure contest held
November 19. In the Advanced Division, in which teams must memorize the official FFA opening ceremonies, record minutes of the meeting, and learn to conduct over 15 different parliamentary procedure
abilities, Newton FFA competed and won the contest with a gold rating.
Team members included: Juniors, Atley King and Nick Hoover; sophomores, Windsor Rapp and Grant
Bayer; and freshmen, Cody Durst, Kylee Fisher, and Kristen Rappold.
The team did very well and members are anxious to add to the team and compete next year.
Special thanks to FFA members Holly Bucholtz, Marcy Alexander, and Eric Crowder for assisting in
the organization of the contest event. Thanks, also, to the judges, FFA advisors Mrs. Martin of MiltonUnion and Mrs. Carity of Miami East.

Miami Valley employment specialist Jeff Steele at the Milton-Union Public Library for a Community
Employment Workshop from 12-2 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 29.
Steele has a mental health background with an associate degree in Mental Health and a bachelors
degree in Human Development. He worked for Upper Valley Hospital for 16 years on the child, adolescent and adult units. He has since worked at the David L. Brown Youth Center in Troy and ran a homeless shelter called the Buckeye House before he took the job of Employment Specialist for the Goodwill
Easter Seals Community Employment Program.
Some of the information Steele will share includes:
Job leads pulled from Miami County, Vandalia, and Sidney from the last three weeks.
Information for any client with a criminal background that explains the Federal Bonding
Program and gives a list of employers who might be willing to hire them.
Free rides for job seekers to employers in Miami County looking for workers.
Resums created either from information that pertains to their work history or through oneon-one help with Steele.
Mr. Steele will also hold a question and answer session. Attendees can discuss topics such as: 1) How
a job seeker might enroll in school to help find a job; 2) How to present yourself in an interview; and 3)
What experience or knowledge Steele can personally provide.

Annual Spaghetti Dinner to be held at Zion Lutheran Church in Tipp

Covington donor Gary Lavey has a drawer full of blood drive Tshirts, but when it came to picking which one to wear on the night
that he might win a new Chevy Cruze, he said, It was a no brainer.
He picked the Community Blood Center (CBC) 50 Years of Saving
Lives anniversary T-shirt he received when he made the donation
that entered him into the Summer Cruze-In Blood Drive drawing.
It turned out to be his lucky shirt.
Gary was one of 10 computer-selected finalists in the Summer
Cruze-In campaign to encourage blood donations during the challenging summer months. The finalists were invited to the downtown
Dayton CBC Thursday, Oct. 23, for the tense, final drawing. They
each selected a sealed envelope from a table, and after a 10-second
countdown, opened them simultaneously. With a shocked look on
his face, Gary held up the winning golden ticket.
I opened this and saw that gold at the end and I said,
Incredible! After a round of handshakes from his fellow finalists
and a long hug from his wife Amy, he sat in his new Chevy Cruze
and talked about being a blood donor. I want to be able to help,
where I know its a needed thing, he said. I know a lot of people
dont give and they should. He then gave credit to his daughter
Kylie. My daughter really did get me started and she started a good
thing with me and I thank her for that. Just by going, just saying
Hey Dad, go donate with me and I said OK.
Dr. David Smith, CEO of Community Blood Center/Community
Tissue Services, said, I want to thank all 10 finalists. There are 10
heroes here.
