Word Study Lesson

November 18, 2014


Go in order: MORNING: Yellow, Green, Teal, & Blue AFTERNOON: Yellow, green,
blue (with teal words)
No more than 10 MINUTES!!!
Have students bring words, pencil, & word study/spelling notebook to back table

MORNING
YELLOW: Sort 45 (Plural endings S and ES)
Write on whiteboard: headings +S +ES
Say pull out the headings that are bolded
The letter s or es is added to nouns to indicate more than one but they are
also added to verbs (walk, walks)
Write wishes, wished, and wishing on the board. Underline wish in each word
and explain that this is the base word to which endings can be added.
Underline base word in each word. Ask students what is left over- the s or es.
Tell students that adding an s or es to a base word tells us there is more than
one.
ALL BASE WORDS SHOULD BE UNDERLINED
+s
-pull out the word eyes: eye (singular) or eyes (plural)
-sort/find all words that add only a s at the end of the word
-9 words
-have students say all the words they find and I will write them down on the
whiteboard
-GO OVER words they may not know: Badges
+es
-sort/find all words that add an es at the end of the word
-16 words
-have students say all the words they find and I will write them down on the
whiteboard

Ask students: how do you know when to add s and when to add es?
o Have students sort +es group by the final letter of the base word. They
should notice that all the base words end in sh, ch, s, or x.
o Have students sort words by final letter of base word: SH, CH, SS, X
Students will write the sort on next clean page in word study notebook
Then go back to seat

GREEN: SORT 8 (Unusual plurals) Ms. Smith will do this group


Write on whiteboard: headings fe>ves, vowel change, no change
Say pull out the headings that are bolded
Say, some words form plurals in unusual ways
Begin this sort by matching singular and plural forms

Example: Pull out the words: wife and wives. Show students where this
goes under the header fe>ves. Explain wife is singular, wives is plural.
Mention the LESS THAN SIGN
Pull out the words: foot and feet. Show students where this goes
under the header vowel changes.
o Have students match singular and plural forms
o Then have students put them under the right header.
o Fe>ves: 12 words, vowel change: 10 words; no change: 2 words
Have students say all the words and I will write them on the whiteboard
o Discuss what loaf or loaves mean (loaf of bread)
Students will write the sort on the next clean page in word study notebook
Then go back to seat

TEAL

(in morning but BLUE in afternoon): Sort 23


Write on whiteboard the headings: au, aw, al, oddball
Say pull out the headings that are bolded
All of these words have the same sound in them au, aw, al BUT the spelling is
different even though the sound is the same

Au
-find the word saucer. A saucer is a small plate.
-find all the words that have an au in the word
-10 words
-have students say all the words and I will write them on the board
-Address the words: August (first letter capitalized because it is a month),
auction (give away something for money), caution (being careful)
Aw
-find the word awful. Awful has a aw in it
-find all the words that have a aw in the word
-7 words
-have students say all the words and I will write them on the board
-Address the words: gnawed (chewed), gawking (to stare)
Al
-find the word also. Also has an al in it
-find all the words that have an al in the word
-5 words
-have students say all the words and I will write them on the board
Oddball
-All right is included because some students often misspell this as alright,
making it into a compound word when it should not be
-Laughed has the au pattern but does not have the sound
Students will write the sort on the next clean page in word study notebook
Then go back to seat
BLUE (MORNING ONLY): Sort 5 (Suffixes y, -ly, -ily)
Write on whiteboard the headings: -y, -ly, -ily

Say pull out the headings that are bolded


A suffix is something that is added to the end of the word. A prefix is
something that is added to the beginning of the word. And the root word is in
the middle. So there is a prefix at the beginning of the word, a root word in
the middle, and a suffix at the end of the word.
-Y
-find the word scratchy
-underline scratch (the root word)
-adding a y to the base word creates an adjective (a word that describes
something)
-find all the words that have a y added to the end of the word. Only a Y
-10 words
-have students say all the words and I will write them down
-REVIEW: squirmy (always moving), velvety (soft), shaggy (having long messy
hair)
-Underline all Base words/root words
-LY
-find the word silently
-underline silent (the root word)
-adding a ly to the base word creates an adverb. All adverbs end with a LY
-find all the words that have a LY added to the end of the word. Only a LY
-10 words
-have students say all the words and I will write them down
-REVIEW: rapidly (quickly), fluently (smoothly spoken), generously (giving a
lot)
-Underline all the base words/root words

-ILY
-find the word merrily (means happy) not a base word in this word
-adding an ily to the base word creates an adverb. All adverbs end with a LY
-find all the words that have an ILY added to the end of the word. Only an ILY
-4 words
-have students say all the words and I will write them down
-REVIEW: hastily (quickly)
-Underline all the base words/root words
Students will write down all of the words in a sort on the next clean page in
their spelling notebook
Then go back to seat
