• The battle of Shiloh resulted in the frustration
in Johnston's plans of the joining of Union

Antietam

• Declared freedom of all slaves in any
state of the Confederacy by January 1 ,

• The Emancipation Proclamation
resulted in the freeing of nearly all
slaves.
Chancellorsville

• Andrew Jackson was most valued General for the
South and shot by own men on accident and died
from pneumonia 8 days later
• The battle of Chancellorsville resulted in a
Confederate victory and the North lost it's spirit.

Vicksburg

• Final major military action of Vicksburg
campaign
• Confederate surrender
• This yielded command of the Mississippi
River to the Union and Vicksburg did not
celebrate Independence Day for 80 years.
Battle of Gettysburg
• July 1 - 3 1863
• Gettysburg, Pennsylvania
• Largest number of casualties in Civil War
• Confederacy retreated
• Created Union enthusiasm
• The battle of Gettysburg was considered the turning point of the
war because the Union won and the South retreated from the battle.
• It proved to the Union that the Confederacy could be defeated and
the battle hurt the south politically which the South looked at as a
setback in the war.

• Dedicated to fallen soldiers
• The speech was given 4 1/2 months after the
Battle of Gettysburg
Lincoln's Reelection
• November 8, 1864
• Beat out George B. McClelland
• The reelection of Lincoln signified
that the Confederacy was probably
going to lose the war against the
North.

Appomattox Courthouse
• April 1865
• Lee surrendered the war to Grant
on April 9, 1865 at the Appomattox
Courthouse.
• Johnston (Confederacy) surrendered
to Sherman ( Union) on April 26th
