A workshop took place at the Norwich and Norfolk Scope Associations (NANSA)
Bowthorpe Centre on 7 August 2013. In the spring of that year, some of the students
from the Centre visited an exhibition about Japanese papermaking at the
Norwich University of the Arts in March/April. At the same time, an exhibition
of contemporary papermaking artists took place in two Norwich galleries.
I worked with
Richard Shepherd, the
Bowthorpe Centres art
tutor, to develop a
programme for the students
to help them gain a better
understanding of the skills
involved. This was made
possible with funding
& assistance from
Prue Dobinson of the
International Association of
Hand Papermakers and
Paper Artists (IAPMA).
We worked on the theme of
Self Portraits. Richard took
photos of everyone first thing
that morning. These were then
printed out in two formats.
To start with ,we made papers
in which everyones face
appeared as a small postage
stamp-sized image. The
papers looked like a floating
group portrait. The second
image we used was larger,
and was a close up of each
students face.
