Introduction

“’Hear, O Israel: The Lord our God, the Lord is one. Love the Lord your God with all your
heart and with all your soul and with all your mind and with all your strength.’ The second is
this: ‘Love your neighbor as yourself.’ There is no commandment greater than these.”
(Mark 12:29-31)
You are invited to attend the “Growing Disciples through the Gospel of Mark Bible
Study” on Wednesdays from February 25 through March 25. There are two options for you to
attend this Bible Study which include a Brown Bag Lunch (Bring your own) at 12:00PM at New
Bloomington UMC and a “Souper Supper” at Meeker Fellowship Hall at 6:00 PM with the Bible
Study from 6:45 PM to 8:00PM. The “Souper Supper” meal will include soup, sandwich, dessert
and beverages each week.
Our challenge is to find clarity of God’s mission in the world. I have heard many people
tell me that they are trying to get a better understanding of what God wants for their lives in the
midst of these challenging times. These Lenten Bible Studies are designed to get a fresh
perspective on the Gospel of Mark and the meaning of discipleship in the time of Jesus and in
our times. Mark was the first Gospel written that gave an account of the life, teachings, death,
and resurrection of Jesus Christ. The author quickly gets to the point in sixteen chapters of what
it means to be an effective witness of the Gospel as God sends us out to be in mission with the
world.
In this fast paced world, we rarely have an opportunity to read a whole book of the Bible
at a time. We are accustomed to getting short bits of God’s Word in the form of sermons,
devotionals, and other media. A journal with daily scripture assignments, commentary, and room
to write your own personal reflections will be provided. My hope is that you will build
relationships with each other, and will be awakened to a new way of living in today’s world this
Lenten season. Please contact Pastor Ben at (419) 351-2010 if you have questions about this
Lenten Bible Study. I hope you will join us!
Yours in Christ,
Pastor Ben

Week One
Ken Collins said “Lent is a season of soul-searching and repentance. It is a season for
reflection and taking stock. Lent originated in the very earliest days of the Church as a
preparatory time for Easter, when the faithful rededicated themselves and when converts were
instructed in the faith and prepared for baptism.” 1 This week we remember the Baptism of Jesus.
We will hear the story of John who baptized with water and proclaimed that Jesus will baptize
you with the Holy Spirit. Jesus was tempted by Satan. The Gospel of Mark moves quickly,
skipping past the birth narratives to the Baptism and Temptation.

What were the implications of the text as it was written?
What is the meaning for us today?

What does it mean to be a Christian today?
Week Two
Robert C. Tannehill states:

“The way of Jesus leads immediately to confrontation with opposing powers. The Gospel writer
tells us of Jesus’ encounter with an unclean spirit in the Synagogue.”2
2 (A Mirror For Disciples- A Study of the Gospel of Mark 1977, 13)

5 | P a g e “Growing Disciples Through the Gospel of Mark”

Jesus will continually oppose the powers of the world in the Gospel of Mark. There are
forces of good and evil in the world. Jesus has the power for good in the world. When
we align our lives with Jesus, we commit to doing “good” in the world. The Holy Spirit
will empower us as we follow Jesus.

Week Three
Jesus spoke in parables so the common people in that day could understand the Kingdom
of God. The Aramaic word for “Parable” means a riddling or enigmatic saying.3 Those that are

opposed to Jesus teachings about the Kingdom of God found the parables to be incomprehensible
or offensive. Mark states, “With many such parables he spoke the word to them, as they were
able to hear it; he did not speak to them except in parables, but he explained everything in private
to his disciples.”4 Disciples must spend time reading and reflecting on the teachings of Jesus in
order to grow in faith and pave the way for the Kingdom of God in the world. As we gain
knowledge by studying the Gospel of Mark then we will gain God’s power to overcome the
world.

Week Four

9 | P a g e “Growing Disciples Through the Gospel of Mark”

The Gospel of Mark contains two feeding stories. I think the feeding stories remind us
that God’s power can be multiplied in the world. God abundantly provides all we need to do the
work of God in the world. There is an economy of God’s abundance. Pheme Perkins states:
“There is no Christianity without proclaiming the gospel. Teaching and learning the Word of
God are as essential to faith as prayer and belonging are to a Christian community. A community
that has the same compassion for the suffering that Jesus exhibited cannot be content with only
preaching the gospel to the already converted. Christians must also attempt to meet the pressing
social and material needs of others, even if few of those who receive such services become
members of the church.”5

Week Five

Many times in the Gospel of Mark, Jesus tells his disciples to tell no one. The disciples
witness a dazzling display of the power of Jesus. Jesus begins to outline what is to come. The

disciples are to hold onto the secrets of God’s kingdom until “after the Son of Man is risen from
the dead.”6 The passion is being foretold. Jesus needed time to fulfill what he came to do in the
world.

What is the text saying about the things to come?
What is God commanding the disciples to do?
How does this passage remind you of the Baptism of Jesus?

Week Six
John Wesley said, “I am not afraid that the people called Methodists should ever cease to
exist either in Europe or America. But I am afraid, lest they should only exist as a dead sect,

13 | P a g e “Growing Disciples Through the Gospel of Mark”

having the form of religion without the power. And this undoubtedly will be the case, unless they
hold fast to the doctrine, spirit, and discipline with which they first set out.”7
There is so much talk today about the decline of Methodism. When the church becomes
focused on itself and has lost the “heart” for the mission in the world, then it exists as a
dead sect and has lost its power.

you season it?
How effective are we today in being Disciples of Christ for the transformation of the

world?
Have we lost our salt?
What do we need to do to have “True Character?”

Week Seven
This is Pastor Ben’s life verse. I believe that we should dedicate our lives to loving God
and loving others. Being a disciple means to align one’s heart with Jesus and work to bring the
Kingdom of God into the world. N.T. Write said, “ Jesus really did believe that through his

15 | P a g e “Growing Disciples Through the Gospel of Mark”

kingdom-mission Israel’ God would enable people to worship God and love him, and love one
another, in a new way, the way promised by the prophets, the way that stemmed from renewed
hearts and lives. At another level, this comes as a considerable challenge to all contemporary
Christians, asking if our concern for our neighbor really exceeds our concern for what happens in
church on Sunday morning.”8 My hope is that you have grown as a Disciple of Christ and that
you will go out and makes a better world.

Principles for Bible Study
1. We will trust in the Holy Spirit working in and through our studying
community: illuminating, inspiring, convicting, provoking, comforting,
revealing, and transforming us as individuals and as a Christian

17 | P a g e “Growing Disciples Through the Gospel of Mark”

community.
2. We will be in prayer for each other and for our groups that we may grow
in our faith, knowledge of Scripture, and discipleship of Jesus Christ.
3. We will seek to be guided by Scripture and will regularly study it
together.
4. We will agree that no Christian has a monopoly on understanding either
God’s Word or the words of the Scripture. This includes biblical
scholars and the most unlearned Christian. All of us must listen to one
another and to the Holy Spirit in our midst as we seek to understand the
richness of God’s gifts.
5. We will assume everyone has Christian integrity and not accuse one
another of being unchristian, no matter how unusual the opinions.
6. We will further assume that we will arrive at different understandings of
portions of Scripture, and that will not disturb God as much as it
will some of us.
7. We will speak the truth with love, expressing ourselves with candor and
humility.
8. We will listen, endeavoring to understand each other, especially those
whose views seem to differ from our own, maintaining a spirit of
openness and vulnerability.
9. Different biblical understandings can remain between us, but we can
still be warm Christian friends. In fact, as we grow to better understand
our differences, we can grow in our appreciation of one another.9
