Ice axes not required and snow can be avoided at the divide. One must cross a couple
low angle snow fields down low enroute to the divide. Photo looking down Paintbrush

A few small patches of steep, compacted snow necessitating ice axes remains on the
Paintbrush side of the Divide. Ice axes continue to be recommended. Crossing
Paintbrush requires clmibing snow steeper than any snow encountered when ascending
the Grand Teton. Two weeks ago a hiker with an ice axe fell on steep snow on the Divide
and sustained life threatening injuries.
