Developmental Disabilities
Presenter: Peter Gerhardt, Ed.D.; Dr. Gerhardt has more than 30 years’ experience utilizing ABA principles to
support adolescents and adults with autism.
Synopsis: Individuals with autism are sexual beings. However, individuals interest in sex, or in developing an
Intimate sexual relationship with another person, varies widely. Despite much discussion about decision-making
skills in the self-determination literature there continues to be lack of evidence [supporting the] effectiveness of
sex education and training for persons with developmental disabilities in general, and autism in particular. This
workshop will provide an overview of sexuality education, from the professional and personal points of view, for
individuals with autism, with an emphasis on safety, knowledge, values, and social understanding.
After attending this workshop participants will be able to:

Identify the components of sexuality education across the lifespan.
Discuss the implications of ABA in the development of sexuality education programs and interventions.
Discuss the process by which appropriate sexuality education materials can be developed.
Develop and implement programs designed to teach sexual safety.
