Typography analysis

Genre purpose

The purpose of a typography is to convey the

authors desired message through writing. This
specific typography piece is a poem by Dylan
Garity, a slam poet who advocates for the
implementation of bilingual education.
Throughout his poem titled Rigged game;
Garity describes the disadvantages by which
many students whose first language is not
english, have to go through. Garity focuses on
self-experience; he is a bilingual person himself,
and his sister is an ESL (English as another
language) teacher. Garity utilizes a variation of
parallels and similes to persuade his readers
about the injustices that he thinks are being
committed in the current education system.

Audience and Purpose

Questions

Garitys poem is intended to be read by all those

who undermine the importance of bilingual
education. He specifically quotes a senator who
thinks that throwing money at an urban
school is like feeding caviar to your dog. they
just don't know how to appreciate it. Garity
responds to this senators thoughts by stating
individual examples about actual students, who
struggle and still do their best to keep up with
their education; Well tell that to Ana who has
my sister translate newsletters aloud to her
father because he, too, was never taught how to
read. Tell that to Juan ,whose mother and baby
sister are still in Guatemala whose father works
three jobs(Garity 2013).
Garitys audience ties very well with the
purpose because not only is his poem trying to
persuade about bilingual education to all those
who oppose, but he is also reinforcing the idea
that something needs to be done to fix this
problem, this idea specifically directed to all of
those who may have been oblivious to this
problem before. We are leading these children
along a track built in circles as their lungs fill
with smoke telling them it is their fault they
cant find a way out(2013) By referring to all
those culpable of these kids failure as we he
includes himself, senators, and all readers. garity
then, stretches the need for action towards all his
readers.

Rhetorical Issues

ETHOS: In order to make his argument credible,

Garity utilizes experience as examples. Being a

Bilingual student himself, he seems to know
how bilingual programs have worked, and
giving the fact that his sister is an ESL teacher,
he seems to realize that these programs have not
improved, if anything they have gotten worse
through the years. she teaches ESL at an
elementary school in Boston and every week she
tells me stories about her students.(2013) I am
lucky enough to be one of the winners of this
game.I was handed a head start and a rulebook
in my own tongue (2013)
LOGOS: In order to make a logical argument,
Garity utilizes the individual stories that his
sister tells him, and makes the reader realize that
although every student has different
backgrounds, parents, circumstances, and
previous knowledge, they all share one thing in
common: the struggle to keep up with their
education after trying to learn in an unfamiliar
language or the first time. In 2001, No Child
Left Behind gutted bilingual education.Students
who have been in the country for one year are
now expected to perform at grade level on
standardized English tests if the kids do not
jump high enough, the school loses
money(2013) Garity then, proceeds to state
similes that parallel to the situation. Improving
a school by picking its pockets is like tuning a
guitar by ripping off the strings(2013)
PATHOS: The strongest appeal on Garitys
poem, is the emotional connection he manages
to create between the reader and the individual
stories he tells about different children, which
have been told to him by his sister. My sister
tells me school is the most stable place in these
kids lives Ana does not know how to read in
Spanish, much less English but she still wants to
be a writer when she grows up.Juan chooses to
stay inside and study at recess so that one day
hell be able to teach his own brother. These
kids are good organs in a sick body.(Garity
2013). In addition, Garitys utilization of similes
makes the reader realize how nonsense it sounds

Structure and Delivery

Garitys purpose was to demonstrate the need

for a better bilingual system in current
education. His poem, made the purpose clear for
all readers. Even though his only tools were
words, and experience, he managed to create a
peculiar imagery, which connected the reader
with the difficulties that many children in
america go through. The structure of this poem
is simple and informal, yet Garity manages to
convey a deep meaning and reflective essence
with his words.
