Promised Prophet
Deuteronomy 18:15-19 and various NT texts
- Our passage begins as Moses gives His final speech/sermon to
Israel before they enter the Promised Land
ILLUSTRATION: Listening to my mom and my elders talk about how
sinful our culture is... i just want to say "DUH!"
#1: The Promised Culture
- V9: the nations there have sinful practices
o V10-11: child sacrifices, calling on demons/spirits, sorcery,
witchcraft, calling on the dead
- V12: God is driving them out of the Promised Land
o not attacking innocent people, but it is God's judgment on
their sin
- V13: But Israel is called to be BLAMELESS, COUNTER
CULTURAL
- V14: The Culture listens to fortune tellers and people who call on
dark spirits
o But Israel is not to do these things
- APPLICATION
o God's promise of wicked and sinful culture is not limited to
the Promised Land
o 1 John 2:16 "For all that is in the worldthe desires of the
flesh and the desires of the eyes and pride of lifeis not
from the Father but is from the world.
o Culture will always be sinful and wicked
As God's People, Christians, we are to be different
o Culture will listen to evil sources for wisdom and advice,
rather than God
Christians should not
- Just as Israel was called to be COUNTER-CULTURAL, we as
Christians are called to be COUNTER-CULTURAL

ILLUSTRATION: Bielema; the Hogs; "we're gonna win the SEC"

#2 THE PROMISED PROPHET
- V15: Moses is speaking
o we need to talk about Moses
o He had a relationship with God that very few EVER have
o Exodus 33:11 "Thus the LORD used to speak to Moses face
to face, as a man speaks to his friend."
o Moses was NOT the anointed High Priest of Israel, Aaron his
brother was.
however, Moses was the one who talked with God
Moses interceded on Israel's behalf in times of Trouble
God spoke to Moses when important information was
given
o Moses was greater than even the High Priest
- V15: "God will raise up a Prophet, like me, from among you"
o We need to Note
o Ever since that day, Israel has searched for a FINAL
PROPHET who is like or greater than Moses
- V18: "and I will put my Words in His mouth"
o God's Word will come from Him
- V19: "Whoever does not listen... I myself will require it of Him"
o every human being will be required to Obey the words of
God through the one who is like Moses or Greater than
Moses
- Application:
o Deuteronomy 34:10 "And there has not arisen a prophet
since in Israel like Moses, whom the LORD knew face to
face,"
o From the Time of Moses to Christ's Birth, there had not been
one to come who is like Moses or greater than Moses
none that meets with God face to face

The High Priests did their jobs, the prophets theirs, the
Judges theirs, the kings their jobs, but none were the
Promised Prophet
ILLUSTRATION: Star Wars; the One who will bring balance to the
Force
#3: THE PROMISED ONE
- V15: "Prophet"
o some translations of scripture indicate a capitalized P in
Prophet to denote that the coming one would be more than a
prophet, which is at other times Lower Cased
- Hebrews 3:3 "For Jesus has been counted worthy of more glory
than Mosesas much more glory as the builder of a house has
more honor than the house itself."
- We, as Christians, understand that the Promised One is Jesus
Christ
o God speaks "face to face" with Him because He is God the
Son
o He is greater than Moses
o He acts as Ruler, Prophet, Priest, Judge
o Of course we know that Jesus is MORE THAN A PROPHET,
He is the Messiah
Israel expected someone MORE THAN A PROPHET
TOO
They had prophets
- Matthew 12:6 "I tell you, something greater than the temple is
here."
o Jesus had just healed a man with a birth defected hand on
the sabbath
o then He rebuked those who rebuked Him for "not keeping
the sabbath holy"
o The Temple is the Holiest place EVER in Israel's eyes
nothing could be greater other than God

- Matthew 12:41 "Now someone greater than Jonah is here--but you

refuse to repent."
o Jesus just described how God spoke through Jonah and the
people of Ninevah repented of their wicked, sinful ways
o Jesus is the Promised One and He changes lives by bringing
them to repent of sin
- Matthew 12:42 "The queen of the South will rise up at the
judgment with this generation and condemn it, for she came from
the ends of the earth to hear the wisdom of Solomon, and behold,
something greater than Solomon is here."
o Solomon's Temple was beautiful and ornate and people
came to see it
o Solomon was one of Israel's greatest kings
o Solomon was the wisest man ever
o Yet, Jesus is greater than Solomon
- John 4:12-14 "12 Are you greater than our father Jacob? He gave
us the well and drank from it himself, as did his sons and his
livestock. 13 Jesus said to her, Everyone who drinks of this water
will be thirsty again, 14 but whoever drinks of the water that I will
give him will never be thirsty again.[a] The water that I will give him
will become in him a spring of water welling up to eternal life.
o Jesus is speaking with the woman at the well
o She asks if he is greater than the Namesake of Israel
"Jacob" whom God renamed Israel
o Jesus says yes, my water gives eternal life
- APPLICATION:
o Hebrews 3:7-11 "7 Therefore, as the Holy Spirit says, Today,
if you hear his voice,
8
do not harden your hearts as in the rebellion,
on the day of testing in the wilderness,
9
where your fathers put me to the test
and saw my works for forty years.
10
Therefore I was provoked with that generation,
and said, They always go astray in their heart;
they have not known my ways.
11
As I swore in my wrath,
They shall not enter my rest.

o Jesus is the PROMISED ONE from Deuteronomy 18:15

o He is not only like Moses, but GREATER
o Deuteronomy 18:19 said that whoever will not listen to His
words, God himself would require it.
o V8: Do not harden your hearts, listen to Jesus
Jesus' words is that He came and died so that your
sins can be forgiven
Jesus' words are that "no one comes to the Father but
through Him"
o V11: God requires you to listen to Jesus
or you will not enter God's Rest
that rest is life with God
- In a culture that is sinful and listens to things other than God, we
are called to listen to Jesus Christ for His guidance
o Moses and Israel in the OT only had a hope for Christ
o WE CAN HAVE JESUS
