It might seem crazy what I'm about to say
Sunshine she's here, you can take away
I'm a hot air balloon, I could go to space
With the air, like I don't care baby by the way
Because I'm happy
Clap along if you feel like a room without a roof
Because I'm happy
Clap along if you feel like happiness is the truth
Because I'm happy
Clap along if you know what happiness is to you
Because I'm happy
Clap along if you feel like that's what you wanna do
Here come bad news talking this and that
Yeah, give me all you got, don't hold back
Yeah, well I should probably warn you I'll be just fine
Yeah, no offense to you don't waste your time
Here's why
Because I'm happy
Clap along if you feel like a room without a roof
Because I'm happy
Clap along if you feel like happiness is the truth
Because I'm happy
Clap along if you know what happiness is to you

You know the bed feels warmer
Sleeping here alone
You know I dream in color
And do the things I want
You think you got the best of me
Think you had the last laugh
Bet you think that everything good is gone
Think you left me broken down
Think that I'd come running back
Baby you don't know me, cause you're dead wrong
What doesn't kill you makes you stronger
Stand a little taller
Doesn't mean I'm lonely when I'm alone
What doesn't kill you makes a fire
Put that thing on lighter
Doesn't mean I'm over cause you're gone
What doesn't kill you makes you stronger, stronger
Just me, myself and I
What doesn't kill you makes you stronger
Stand a little taller
Doesn't mean I'm lonely when I'm alone
You heard that I was starting over with someone new

Pupils will enjoy learning to play with language where poems and songs are constantly
utilized. Here, the teacher is the model for pupils. Pupils develop their oral skills through
listening to nursery rhymes, poems, songs, action songs and jazz chants, using and interpreting
non-verbal
actions
to
demonstrate
understanding.
The
poems
we
chose
are.. and song we chose are folk, blues, R&B and Pop songs.
(Refer Appendix 1)
The poems and songs selected are based on the pupils culture background as the
songs and the poems are related to their surrounding and pupils personal experiences. Besides
that, the selections are very much familiar to their world of knowledge in their daily life.
Furthermore, the content of the song or poem needs to be suitable, relating to what the pupils
need to learn. Teachers have to bear in mind that the selecting of the content must relevant and
able to deliver the content of the lesson and able to make the learning fun but yet very
meaningful. Apart from that, there is no point in trying to teach something that the pupils have no
interest in, something they are unwilling or unable to relate to. It is important to know the interest
of the pupils well and that will help the pupils to learn and participate actively in the teaching and
learning session. For example, the selection of R&B and Pop songs that we chose are really
interesting in the term of its melody, rhythm and music range which will be able to make pupils
participate actively and enjoy the lesson as well.
With young learners as our pupils, we will come across many unsuitable songs and
poems which are inappropriate their age or maturity. There are also moral and social issues
presented in songs and poems which should not be presented to young learners. Hence, the
selection of our songs and poems are suitable with our pupils values whereby it relates to their
personal life and daily routine. Moreover, we need to choose songs and poetry which are
sufficiently simple in terms of grammar and vocabulary for our young pupils to be able to
understand what they are about to learn, listen or heard. In the other words, the selection of the
songs and poems are must be based on pupils proficiency level. It simply means that there
should not be too many new items so that they are discouraged the
The simple language used in the songs and poems will help our pupils to respond to the content
as they able to make connection through the songs and poems selected. The other important
principle to be bear in mind by the teachers is they need to be able to resource their lesson
plans. Songs and poems need to be presented and practiced using resources that are readily
available and reliable. Readily and reliable resources help the teachers to convey fun and
meaningful lesson as well as the integration of technology which helps pupils to participate and
respond actively in the learning activity. For example, the use of video clip of song with lyrics
helps pupils to sing the song easily and fun. This will also help pupils to learn fast through visual
resources and remember well the content of the lesson.
There are great many good reasons for using songs and poetry in the classroom
because it is obvious role for songs and poetry is motivation for the pupils. Somehow songs and
poems tend to stick and are easier to remember than straight prose or talking. So the role of
songs and poetry in the ESL classroom is to both teach new material and to practice with
enjoyment. Obviously its role is very central and it should be used at every opportunity.
