Debbie and Chuck Nance
Debbie and Chuck Nance were long time residents of Colorado prior
to retiring to Arizona. Chuck had been a railroader for 37 years and
an engineer for 20 years running trains from Grand Junction, Colorado
to Salt Lake City, Utah. Chuck had also been an officer in Denver,
Colorado for 17 years. Debbie was a business manager and CFO for
a cabinet manufacturing company in Grand Junction, and then a real
estate developer in Denver, Colorado.
Debbie and Chuck have been married for 38 years and have one
daughter along with three grandchildren (two girls and one boy).
The beautiful weather and golfing brought Debbie and Chuck to
Arizona. They moved to Sun City Festival in October 2013 and enjoy golf, bowling, and short adventurous trips
around Arizona. Debbie and Chuck love Sun City Festival’s friendly atmosphere and have made many friends
since moving here.

Boost Your Brain!

by Chuck Eier, M.S. C.S.C.S.,
Fitness/Wellness Director

We all know regular exercise does great things for the body. Being active
keeps the cardiovascular system functioning effectively, maintains strength
and lean muscle mass and helps fight osteoporosis. In addition being
physically fit reduces risk factors for Type II diabetes, many forms of cancer,
heart disease and other chronic diseases. Equal to, or greater than, the
physical benefits of exercise are the benefits to the structure and function
of the brain.
Exercise, in people of all ages, promotes the process of
making new brain cells-also called neurogenesis. As
humans age, the hippocampus, part of the brain used for
forming and storing memory, shrinks in size. In research
with mice, time spent running on a wheel showed development of new cells in the hippocampus. In addition,
these active mice performed better on simple learning
tasks than sedentary cohorts. In humans, the hippocampus has been
found to be larger in those who are physically fit. And, exercise has been
shown to decrease the risk for dementia and even slow its progress.
Beyond just neurogenesis, exercise boosts the brain’s neurotrophic factors. Neurotrophic factors are small proteins which promote the growth and
survival of brain cells. Research has shown exercise causes the release of
brain-derived neurotrophic factors (BDNF) which, in turn lead to enhanced
memory and learning. Research also shows a genetic link to BDNF. This
may lead some people to get greater or lesser release of BDNF and see
more or less benefit from it.
Research by neuroscientist Kirk Erikson studied a group of 120 adults over
one year. With half the group performing a stretching program 3 times
per week and half doing aerobic exercise 3 times per week, subjects were
tested for memory function, BDNF levels and hippocampus size. After one
year the stretching group was found to have a decline in all measurements.
The aerobic exercise group actually showed an increase in all measured
Just as exercise boosts the body’s endurance, it also
boosts the brain’s endurance. In response to cardiovascular exercise, the body’s cells create additional “powerhouses” called mitochondria. This process is not limited
to working muscles. The brain’s cells also create more
mitochondria. As a result, the brain’s ability to operate at
peak levels may be extended to a greater period of time across the day.
A habit of regular exercise will build not just the body, but also the brain.
Keep moving and keep thinking.
