example, in drag racing, drivers need to be licensed to
compete in the various drag racing series. The
governing body of the sport may revoke licenses and
suspend participants who do not meet the required
performance or training. In addition, athletes may have
their licenses or certification suspended for
inappropriate activity.

must be extremely focused when competing. The
difference between winning and losing can often
be a result of a momentary in concentration.
Decision making skills: Athletes and sports
competitors often must take split second
decisions. Football quarterbacks, for example
usually only have seconds to decide wheter to pass
the football or run with it.
Dedication: Athletes and sport competitors must
practice regularly to develop their skills and
improve or maintain their physical conditioning. It
often takes years to become successful so athletes
must be dedicated to their sport.
Hand eye coordination: for many sports including
tennis and baseball, the need to gauge and stike a
fast moving ball is highly dependent on the
athletes hand eye coordination.
Stamina: Endurance can benefit athletes and
sports competitions, particularly those athletes
who participated in long lasting sports
competitors such as marathons.
Teamwork because many athletes compete in a
team sport, such as hocky or soccer the ability to
work with teammates as a cohesive unit is
essential for success.

Education: Firefighters need at least a high school


diploma or equivalent. Some firefighter positions may
require postsecondary education to obtain various
certifications, such as the EMT-Basic certification. EMT
requirements vary by jurisdiction.

Licenses, Certifications, and Registrations


Firefighters may need to be certified as emergency
medical technicians at the EMT-Basic level. In addition,
some fire departments require firefighters to be
certified as an EMT-Paramedic. The National Registry of
Emergency Medical Technicians (NREMT) certifies
EMTs and paramedics. All levels of NREMT certification
require completing a training or education program and
passing the national exam. The national exam has both
a written part and a practical part. For some firefighter
positions, EMT certifications are a requirement to be
hired; in others, they can be earned after being hired.
EMTs and paramedics may work with firefighters at the
scenes of accidents.
