WINDOWS MOVIE MAKER : BASIC SKILLS

GETTING STARTED

Open Windows LIVE Movie Maker


Find the button marked Add videos and photos
ADD the Wildlife video from the sample videos on your computer
Under VIEW, zoom in 6 times. If needed, click on and delete the TITLE below the clip,
which reads Wildlife in HD.

SKILL #1 : CREATE CLIPS

Watch the video through. Notice the clips each shot of a new animal is a new clip.
Play the video through the horses. Pause it at 00:04.17 (right where the horses end and
the birds on the grassy knoll begin). You may need to use the mouse and manually move
the PLAY indicator to get to the right spot, just where the video changes between the
horses and the birds.
Under VIDEO TOOLS, on the Edit Tab, click on the SPLIT button. You have now created
TWO clips.
In the second, longer clip (after the horses), let the video play until 00:07.11 (just as the
birds end and the seals begin). You may need to manually move the PLAY indicator.
Under VIDEO TOOLS, on the Edit Tab, click again on the SPLIT button. You will now have
THREE clips.
Repeat the process again, this time creating a new clip at the start of the rusty-headed
birds at 00:11.83. You will now have FOUR clips.
Repeat the process again, this time creating a new clip at the start of the groundhog in the
field at 00:17.30. You will now have FIVE clips.
Repeat the process again, this time creating a new clip at the start of the panda at
00:20.79. You will now have SIX clips.
Repeat the process again, this time creating a new clip at the start of the flock of birds at
00:24.58. You will now have SEVEN clips.
Verify that you have 7 clips.
Watch the video from the beginning. As the play indicator moves between clips, do any
cuts or hiccups show in the view window, or do the clip transitions still look like they did at
the beginning?
CLEAN UP your clips. Under the VIDEO TOOLS, on the Edit Tab, under EDITING, you
have a TRIM TOOL. Select each clip of you video and choose the TRIM TOOL. If you see
that a new animal appears in the clip (meaning you did not cut it at the right spot) then
move the PLAY indicator to the exact moment. When you get it to the right spot, click on
SAVE TRIM. Repeat this until all your clips are CLEANED UP.
Ask Mr. Gerry to check that you have complete SKILL #1 before moving on to SKILL #2.

SKILL # 4 : TRANSITIONS:

SKILL #2 : WORKING WITH CLIPS

Now, let's MOVE a clip. Click on the FOURTH clip (the close-up of the rusty-headed birds).
Drag the clip and place it BEFORE the final clip (so it is now the SIXTH clip). Play it to
verify it should go from the close-up of the birds to a shot of the large group of birds on
the beach.
Now, let's COPY a clip. Click on the FIRST clip (the horses). Go to the HOME tab and click
COPY. Then click PASTE, so there are TWO horse clips. If you count the total number of
clips, there are now EIGHT clips.
Click on the FOURTH clip (the seals). Go to the HOME tab and click COPY. Then click
PASTE, so there are TWO seal clips. If you count the total number of clips, there are now
NINE clips.
Click on the SEVENTH clip (the panda). Go to the HOME tab and click COPY. Then click
PASTE, so there are TWO panda clips. If you count the total number of clips, there are
now TEN clips.
Verify that you have TEN CLIPS. Then, move on the SKILL #3.

SKILL # 3 : CHANGING SPEEDS

Click on the FIRST clip (the horses). Under the VIDEO TOOLS tab, in the ADJUST ribbon

tab, adjust the SPEED to TWICE as fast (2x).


Click on the SECOND clip (the second shot of the horses). Adjust the SPEED to HALF as
fast (0.5x).
Now let's slow down some clips. Click on the THIRD clip (the birds on the grassy knoll).
Adjust the SPEED to a QUARTER as fast (0.25x).
Click on the FIFTH clip (the second shot of the seals). Adjust the SPEED to HALF as fast
(0.5x).
Click on the SEVENTH clip (the first shot of the panda). Adjust the SPEED to TWICE as
fast (2x).
Click on the EIGHTH clip (the second shot of the panda). Adjust the SPEED to a
QUARTER as fast (0.25x).
Click on the TENTH clip (the shot of the large group of birds on the beach). Adjust the
SPEED to HALF as fast (0.5x).
NOTICE the total length of the video it is now about 01:13.39 long.
Ask Mr. Gerry to check that you have completed SKILL #2 and SKILL #3 before moving on
to SKILL #4.

CLICK on the ANIMATIONS tab at the top and notice the choice for TRANSITIONS on the
left. Notice there is also a tool to adjust the DURATION of the transition.
CLICK on the FIRST clip (the first clip of the horses). Under the ANIMATIONS tab, look on
the TRANSITIONS ribbon tab and choose the BLUR THROUGH BLACK option.
CLICK on the SECOND clip (the second clip of the horses). Under the ANIMATIONS tab,
look on the TRANSITIONS ribbon tab and scroll down to the CINEMATIC category, choose
the CINEMATIC - BLUR option. Change the DURATION to 2 seconds.
CLICK on the THIRD clip (the birds on the grassy knoll). Under DISSOVLES category,
choose the CROSSFADE option.
CLICK on the FOURTH clip (the first clip of the seals). Under DIAGANOLS category,
choose the FILLED V RIGHT option.
CLICK on the FIFTH clip (the second clip of the seals). Under DISSOLVE category, choose
the BLUR option.
CLICK on the SIXTH clip (the groundhog). Under REVEALS category, choose the FLIP
option.
CLICK on the SEVENTH clip (the first panda). Under DISSOLVES category, choose the
PIXILATE option.
CLICK on the EIGHTH clip (the second panda). Under DISSOVLES category, choose the
CROSSFADE option. Change the DURATION to 2 seconds.
CLICK on the NINTH clip (the close-up of the rusty-headed birds). Under SHATTERS
category, choose the SHATTERS RIGHT option.
CLICK on the TENTH clip (the shot of the large flock of birds). Under SWEEPS AND
CURLS category, choose the PAGE CURL TOP RIGHT option. Change the DURATION to
2 seconds.
NOTICE the TOTAL TIME of your video should now be about 01:02.44.
BEFORE CONTINUING under the VIEW tab, hit ZOOM OUT a few times until you can
view ALL TEN CLIPS in the viewing window simultaneously.
Ask Mr. Gerry to check that you have completed SKILL #4 before moving on to SKILL #5.

SKILL # 5 : ANIMATIONS

NOW, let's add some more ANIMATIONS. Click on ANIMATIONS and see the PAN AND
ZOOM commands on the RIGHT SIDE of the toolbar.
CLICK on the SECOND clip (the second clip of the horses). Under the ANIMATIONS tab,
look on the PAN AND ZOOM ribbon tab and scroll down to the ZOOM IN category; choose
the ZOOM IN BOTTOM - LEFT option.
CLICK on the THIRD clip (the birds on the grassy knoll). On the PAN AND ZOOM ribbon
tab and scroll down to the ZOOM IN category; choose the ZOOM OUT CENTER option.
CLICK on the FIFTH clip (the second clip of seals). On the PAN AND ZOOM ribbon tab
and scroll down to the PAN ONLY category; choose the PAN UP option.
CLICK on the EIGHTH clip (the second clip of the panda). On the PAN AND ZOOM ribbon

tab and scroll down to the ZOOM IN category; choose the ZOOM IN - CENTER option.
CLICK on the TENTH clip (the clip of the large group of birds). On the PAN AND ZOOM
ribbon tab and scroll down to the ZOOM IN category; choose the ZOOM IN TOP RIGHT
option.
Watch you video through to verify you have added you PAN AND ZOOM commands, then
move on to SKILL #6.

SKILL # 6 : VISUAL EFFECTS

Click on the VISUAL EFFECTS tab. If you notice in the LOWER RIGHT corner of the menu,
there is a small, downward arrow click on this. Now notice the menu choices are
arranged by categories and there is an additional option for MULTIPLE EFFECTS along the
bottom.
CLICK on the FIRST clip (the first clip of the horses). Under the VISUAL EFFECTS tab,
click the down arrow to view more options. Under the ARTISTIC category; choose the
POSTERIZE option.
CLICK on the SECOND clip (the second clip of the horses). Under the MOTIONS AND
FADES category; choose the 3D RIPPLE option.
CLICK on the THIRD clip (the birds on the grassy knoll). Under the ARTISTIC category;
choose the EDGE DETECTION option.
CLICK on the FOURTH clip (the first clip of the seals). Under the BLACK AND WHITE
category; choose the CYAN option.
CLICK on the SIXTH clip (the groundhog). Under the MOTIONS & FADES category;
choose the SPIN 360 option.
CLICK on the SEVENTH clip (the first clip of the panda). Next to the list of VISUAL
EFFECTS, click on the BRIGHTNESS option. Adjust the brightness ALL THE WAY TO the
RIGHT 100%.
CLICK on the EIGHTH clip (the second clip of the panda). Under the CINEMATIC
category; choose the CINEMATIC OVERLAY LEFT 2 option.
CLICK on the NINTH clip (the close-up of the rusty-headed birds). Under the MOTIONS
AND FADES category; choose the HUES CYCLE ENTIRE COLOR SPECTRUM option.
CLICK on the TENTH clip (the large group of birds on the beach). Under the MOTIONS
AND FADES category; choose the FADE OUT TO BLACK option.
Ask Mr. Gerry to check that you have completed SKILL #5 and SKILL #6 before moving on
to SKILL #7.

SKILL # 7 : ADDING TITLES

On the HOME tab, click on TITLE.


Change the TEXT to read : TEST VIDEO by (FIRST NAME)
Move the TEXT BOX to the upper right corner of the screen.
Change the TEXT to be Comic Sans font, 24 pt, blue.
Change the BACKGROUND COLOR to be RED.
Add and ANIMATION to the TITLE. Under the EFFECTS ribbon tab, click the down arrow
to reveal more options. Under the CONTEMPORARY category, choose
CONTEMPORARY FADE 3.
Change the START TIME to 1 second. Change the TEXT DURATION to 5 seconds.
Play your video to verify your title works. Then move on to SKILL #8.

SKILL # 8 : ADDING CAPTIONS

Click halfway through the the FIRST seal clip. On the HOME tab, click CAPTION.
CHANGE the text duration to 1 second.
Change the TEXT to read : SEALS!

Add an ANIMATION to the CAPTION. Under the EFFECTS tab, in the FLY category,
choose FLY IN LEFT.
Click on the SEALS! caption. On the HOME tab, click on COPY.
Move your PLAY INDICATOR to the 00:30.00 mark of the video. Click PASTE on the
HOME TAB.
Click on the NEW CAPTION. Activate the TEXT TOOLS tab if not activated. In the
ADJUST group, click on the EDIT TEXT button. Change it to read MORE SEALS! Also,
change the DURATION to 3 seconds, and change the EFFECT to SCROLL.
Play your video to verify your captions have been added. Then move to SKILL #9.

SKILL # 9 : ADDING CREDITS

Under the HOME tab, activate the drop-down menu next to CREDITS. Insert CREDITS.
Add your name. Change the FONT of your name to TIMES NEW ROMAN. Add an
ANIMATION of YOUR CHOICE. Under the VIDEO TOOLS tab, in the ADJUST group,
change the duration to 3 seconds.
Under the HOME tab, activate the drop-down menu next to CREDITS. Insert DIRECTED
BY. Add your name. Change the FONT of your name to A FONT OF YOUR CHOICE. Add
an ANIMATION of YOUR CHOICE. Under the VIDEO TOOLS tab, in the ADJUST group,
change the duration to 3 seconds.
Under the HOME tab, activate the drop-down menu next to CREDITS. Insert STARRING.
Change the text to read THE ANIMALS. Change the FONT of the text to A FONT OF
YOUR CHOICE. Add an ANIMATION of YOUR CHOICE. Under the VIDEO TOOLS tab, in
the ADJUST group, change the duration to 3 seconds.
Under the HOME tab, activate the drop-down menu next to CREDITS. Insert LOCATION.
Change the text to read COMPUTER SCIENCE, JHS. Change the FONT of the text to A
FONT OF YOUR CHOICE. Add an ANIMATION of YOUR CHOICE. Under the VIDEO
TOOLS tab, in the ADJUST group, change the duration to 3 seconds.
Ask Mr. Gerry to check you work on SKILLS #7, #8, and #9 before moving on to SKILL #10.

SKILL # 10 : ADDING MUSIC

Under the HOME tab, choose ADD MUSIC.


Select a FILE to ADD from the MUSIC folder on the computer.
Under the MUSIC TOOLS tab, choose FADE OUT SLOW.
Move on to SKILL #11.

SKILL # 11 : SAVING

SAVING YOUR PROJECT By saving your project, you can come back and make
adjustments later so you don't need to redo all of your work on the entire video. Under the
FILE tab, click on SAVE PROJECT AS. Choose your folder and type a name for your
project. Then SAVE it.
SAVING YOUR MOVIE By saving your movie, you are publishing your movie with all the
changes together so it is one movie from start to finish. You want to save your movie when
you have made sure it is exactly as you want it.
On the RIGHT of the tool bar at the top, locate the SAVE MOVIE button. Click on the
button to see the VARIOUS OPTIONS for saving your movie. Each option offers a different
quality for your movie and different file size.
SAVE your MOVIE as TWO VERSIONS to your folder. Save one version FOR EMAIL, and
save another version using the choice RECOMMENDED FOR THIS PROJECT.
Once it has saved the movie, locate the movie in your folder. Click on it to play and watch
your final movie.
Ask Mr. Gerry to check your movie once you have completed SKILL #11.
