FADE IN

INT. – BERNIE’S JUNIOR HIGH SCHOOL

HALLWAY

The school bell rings between classes signifying the end of

Soon after the bell rings, the hallway is filled with kids
between the ages of eleven through fourteen years old.

Within the mix are some boys throwing a football back and
forth to each other, and there’s also a few groups of girls
walking together gossiping with each other.

The last kid to leave one of the classrooms is BERNIE, a

cute, short, but very awkward eleven year old sixth-grader
with hair slicked to the side, wide eyes and coke-bottle
glasses.

He’s struggling to carry several books to his locker. Once

he gets to his locker, he notices his longtime crush,
BEATRICE, standing a few lockers down.

Beatrice is a tall skinny girl whose beauty is hidden

behind her braces, bad hair, wide eyes and coke-bottle
glasses. By all traditional definitions, she is awkward as
well.

Nervously, Bernie opens his locker and checks himself out

in the mirror hanging on the door inside.

He smiles in the mirror to check out his teeth and he

notices a piece of lettuce stuck in between one of them so
he picks it out.

As he’s concentrating on his teeth, a kid walks by him and

says something derogatory in his direction without losing
stride.

STUDENT #1
Hey dork.

Next Bernie gently blows into the mirror and takes a deep
breath so he can check out his breath.

Another kid walks by him and says something.

“My Imaginary Friends” – Original Screenplay by Jason Wiese 3

STUDENT #2
What’s up dork?

Bernie is so used to this behavior that he doesn’t even

realize people are saying anything to him.

BERNIE
(to himself)
Teeth are sparkling, breath smells
good…time to make my move.

Bernie grabs a stack of books for his next class, closes

his locker and approaches Beatrice.

Bernie tries his hardest to act suavely but it just comes

off geeky and he becomes increasingly nervous.

BERNIE
Sooo Beatrice, how are you this
fine day?

BEATRICE
I’m good.

BERNICE
(nervously)
You know, ummmm, the Fall dance is,
ummmm, coming up this weekend and I
just was, ahhh, wondering if you’d,
ummmm, like to go with me?

BEATRICE
You want me to go with you?

BERNIE
Yeah, it’d, ummm, be swell. My mom
could pick you up in her Volvo
station wagon, it’s quite the ride.

BEATRICE
Bernie I can’t go.

BERNIE
Oh do you have pre-existing plans
for that night?

BEATRICE
Oh no, I’ll be at the dance. I
(MORE)

BEATRICE (cont’d)
wouldn’t miss it. I just meant
that I can’t go with you.

BERNIE
(sadly)
Ohhh, I guess I understand. Well
maybe you can save a dance for me?
I do a mean cha-cha; my mom taught
it to me once.

BEATRICE
Maybe I will, but I can’t promise
you one.

BERNIE
Yeah I know, there will be a lot
of guys there and you can’t dance
with everyone. Hopefully I’ll be
one of the lucky ones.

BEATRICE
I have to run off to class now.

Beatrice politely brushes him off because she’s not really

in a rush to leave her locker.

BERNIE
Right, I got you. So, I’ll see you
later.

Bernie walks away dejected, his head slung down low.

As he walks down the hall, he gets tripped by the notorious

SCHOOL BULLY, a tough-looking fourteen year old kid.

Bernie falls face down on the floor, his books scatter

everywhere and his glasses fall off his face.

Everyone in the hall laughs at his misfortune.

SCHOOL BULLY
Ohhh, Bernard falls down and go
boom. What’s the matter, you having
problems walking?

Bernie struggles to find his glasses and get up.

“My Imaginary Friends” – Original Screenplay by Jason Wiese 5

SCHOOL BULLY
(menacingly)
Here buddy, let me help you.

The school bully picks up one of his notebooks, opens it

up, rips out a handful of pages that have already been
written on and throws them across the hallway.

After that, he has a big hearty laugh.

SCHOOL BULLY
Come on boys, let’s skip next
period.

The school bully walks away with three of his friends, all
tough-looking punks as well.

The school bell rings signifying the next period is

starting.

As kids go back to walking down the hallway, some of them

kick Bernie’s notebooks and school books around.

Bernie finally finds his glasses and puts them on. Then he
gets to his knees and scrambles to collect his school books
and notebooks.

Beatrice, who was watching all this go down by her locker,

feels bad and approaches him.

She gets down on her knees and helps him collect his books.

BEATRICE
Are you OK, Bernie?

BERNIE
(frustrated)
Don’t worry. I got everything,
you don’t have to worry about
little old me.

BEATRICE
I want to help though.

BERNIE
(frustrated)
No, that’s OK. What are you
going to do? Pick up my Algebra
book then just take it with you?
“My Imaginary Friends” – Original Screenplay by Jason Wiese 6

BEATRICE
Bernie, you know I’m not like
that.

BERNIE
(looks directly at her)
You’re all like that.

Bernie finally collects all his things then grabs the lone
book in Beatrice’s hands and walks off.

Beatrice is left in the middle of the hallway by herself.

BEATRICE
(to herself)
I’m sorry Bernie.

EXT. – RESIDENTIAL STREET BY SCHOOL – DAY

After school, Bernie is walking down the street looking

totally dejected. He’s sluggish and he constantly looks
down at the ground as he walks.

Up ahead of Bernie, a front yard is being watered with a

sprinkler which causes a puddle to form in the road.

As Bernie gets to the sidewalk in front of the house, a car

comes speeding by, runs through the puddle and splashes
Bernie. He gets soaked.

Bernie stops for a moment to fix his hair and wipe the
water off his books then he continues on like nothing
happened.

Once he gets to a cross street, he sees Beatrice walking

towards him from the other street.

He continues walking, pretending like he doesn’t notice

her.

He crosses the street before Beatrice is able to get to the

corner. She ends up crossing the street and walking about
ten feet behind Bernie on the sidewalk.

She calls out to him.

BEATRICE
Bernie! Bernie!
“My Imaginary Friends” – Original Screenplay by Jason Wiese 7

Bernie ignores her and keeps walking.

Beatrice speeds up until she catches him and she taps him
on the back.

BEATRICE
Bernie!

Bernie stops walking and turns around. He’s still

embarrassed from earlier in the day so he’s looking at the
ground and not directly at her.

BERNIE
(softly)
What?

BEATRICE
What’s wrong Bernie?

BERNIE
What do you think? I get picked on
all the time at school.

BEATRICE
Ohhh those kids don’t know any better.
They’re not good people. You are
though.

BERNIE
So why won’t you go to the Fall dance
with me?

BEATRICE
(sighs)
Ohhh Bernice. It’s complicated.

BERNICE
How complicated could it be?

BEATRICE
You wouldn’t understand.

BERNICE
Why wouldn’t I? I’m smart.

BEATRICE
I know you are, but it’s difficult
to explain.
“My Imaginary Friends” – Original Screenplay by Jason Wiese 8

BEATRICE (cont’d)
It’s just that…it’s just that I
don’t think it’d be good for me
at school if I showed up with you.
No offense and it’s nothing personal.

BERNIE
(dejectedly)
None taken.

BEATRICE
I just don’t want to be made fun of
more than I already am. I’d like
to be considered popular, just like
you would too.

Bernie continues walking followed closely by Beatrice.

BERNIE
Who says I want to be popular? I
like me just the way I am.

BEATRICE
I do too, but come on, doesn’t every-
one want to be popular?

BERNIE
I suppose most people do.

BEATRICE
So you see what I’m saying?

BERNIE
So you get made fun of too?

BEATRICE
All the time. Girls are brutal,
probably more so than boys.

BERNIE
Really?

Bernie slows down so that he and Beatrice are walking side

by side now.

BEATRICE
Oh yeah, for sure. The worst is
before and after gym class.
“My Imaginary Friends” – Original Screenplay by Jason Wiese 9

BERNIE
(inquisitively)
What do they say?

BEATRICE
Ohhh, the usual. They call me four
eyes and make fun of my braces. I
don’t know what they want me to do,
I need to see and I want straight
teeth.

BERNIE
I know what you mean.

BEATRICE
Plus I’m not really athletically
gifted; they always target me
first at dodge ball and I’m
always picked last in class.

BERNIE
That’s only because you don’t have
gym class with me.

Bernie and Beatrice stop in front of Beatrice’s house.

BEATRICE
Well, here’s my house.

BERNIE
Are you sure you don’t want to go
to the dance with me? It sounds
like we have a lot in common.

BEATRICE
I’m sorry Bernie, you’re a nice
kid, but I just can’t.

BERNIE
(dejectedly)
OK.

BEATRICE
Get home safe.

Beatrice playfully skips across her front yard and into her
house.
“My Imaginary Friends” – Original Screenplay by Jason Wiese 10

Bernie continues walking down the street, his head is slung

low again and he just looks at the ground as he walks.

INT. – BERNIE’S HOUSE

LIVING ROOM

Bernie walks into the house and places his backpack on the
floor right by the door.

His 3 year old younger brother, ANDY, is sitting in the

living room entranced by whatever he’s watching on TV and
doesn’t acknowledge him.

Bernie walks through the living room into the

KITCHEN

Where his MOTHER is busy preparing dinner.

She’s got her back turned to him as she’s reaching up into

a cabinet to grab a box, but nevertheless she hears him
enter.

BERNIE’S MOM
Hey sugarplum, how was school
today?

Bernie, still dejected, doesn’t answer, or even

acknowledge, her and continues walking through the kitchen
without hesitation.

BERNIE’S BEDROOM

Bernie enters his bedroom and shuts the door behind him.

He sits down on the edge of his bed and looks down at the
floor. He starts sniffling and a couple of tears fall down
his cheek.

He looks up at a bunch of stuffed animals sitting on a

chair by his bed.

Looking directly at three stuffed animals in particular – a

dog (Murray), a teddy bear (Theodore) and an African
elephant (Mr. Elephant) - he addresses them specifically.
“My Imaginary Friends” – Original Screenplay by Jason Wiese 11

BERNIE
(sniffling)
Theodore, Murray, Mr. Elephant,
you guys are my only friends.
(pauses)
Why do I always get picked on?
(pauses)
Why am I so different from the
other kids? I don’t mean to be,
and I don’t want to be, I just am.
(pauses)
I wish I wasn’t picked on, you
know what I mean?
(pauses)
At least you guys are always there
for me and you’d never hurt me.

Bernie lies down on his bed to try to fall asleep. He is

still a little bit teary-eyed but after a few moments his
eyelids start getting heavier and heavier.

Just as he is about to fall asleep there is a knock on the

door. His mom and dad enter the room before hearing a
response from Bernie.

BERNIE’S MOM
Hi Bernie!

BERNIE’S DAD
How’s it going champ?

Bernie’s mom is hiding something behind her back.

BERNIE’S MOM
Your dad and I talked and we thought
it’d be a good idea to give you an
early birthday present.

Bernie perks up and sits up on his bed.

BERNIE
Oh yeah! What is it?

BERNIE’S MOM
We went to Toys R Us the other day
and asked them what’s the hottest
new video game out for kids right
now. And you know what they said?
“My Imaginary Friends” – Original Screenplay by Jason Wiese 12

Bernie’s mom unveils what’s behind her back and gives him
the video game.

BERNIE’S MOM (cont’d)

The Chronicles of Prince Valor.

A huge smile covers Bernie’s face.

BERNIE
(excitedly)
The Chronicles of Prince Valor?!?
The Chronicles of Prince Valor!?!
Awesome!

Bernie takes the game and hugs his mom and dad.

BERNIE
Thanks mom! Thanks dad!

BERNIE’S DAD
Ohhh, you’re welcome son!

BERNIE
I’m going to play this right now.

Bernie stands up, runs over to his TV and turns it on. He

fumbles around with the video game packaging to try to open
it up.

He finally manages to open up the video game after a little

bit and he pops it into his game console.

Once he does that, he grabs his controller and sits down on

the floor only a few feet away from the TV.

BERNIE’S MOM
Well Bernie, I hope you enjoy the
game.

Bernie is still beaming from ear to ear.

BERNIE
I will, I will!

Bernie’s dad walks over to Bernie and pats him on the head.

BERNIE’S DAD
Have fun son.
“My Imaginary Friends” – Original Screenplay by Jason Wiese 13

Bernie’s parents walk out of the room.

Bernie starts up the game and is immediately in awe of all

the graphics. His eyes grow even wider than they already
are.

BERNIE
Whoooaaa.

LATER ON AT NIGHT

Bernie is still playing the video game in the darkness of

his room. The only light is coming from the glow of the
TV.

He is still practically entranced with playing the game.

BERNIE’S MOM (O.S.)

(yells)
Bernie! Dinnertime!

Bernie is so engrossed in the game that he doesn’t even

hear his mom.

After a few seconds she shouts out to him again.

BERNIE’S MOM (O.S.)

(yells)
Bernie! Dinner!

BERNIE
I’m busy! Can I eat my dinner up
here tonight?

BERNIE’S MOM (O.S.)

I guess, if you’d like.

LATER ON

Bernie is still sitting in the same place playing his video

game. Besides him is a near empty dinner plate.

Without skipping a beat in his game, Bernie eats the

remaining few forkfuls of food from his plate and finishes
off his dinner. All the while his eyes barely move off the
TV.
“My Imaginary Friends” – Original Screenplay by Jason Wiese 14

LATER ON

Bernie is still immersed in his video game.

BERNIE’S MOM (O.S.)

(yells)
Bernie, it’s time for bed!

BERNIE
Five more minutes mom!

BERNIE’S MOM (O.S.)

OK, but only five minutes.

BERNIE
Thanks mom.

LATER ON

While Bernie is still playing his game, his mom knocks on

his door and walks into the room.

Noticing that the only light in the room is coming from the
TV, she immediately turns on a lamp.

BERNIE’S MOM
Bedtime Bernie.

BERNIE
(sadly)
But mom.

BERNIE’S MOM
No buts this time mister. You asked
for five minutes and I was nice
enough to give you ten. It’s past
eleven o’clock.

BERNIE
OK, OK, I’ll stop for the night.

Even though Bernie said he’ll stop he continues playing,

trying to get in every last second of action.

Frustrated, Bernie’s mom stands right in front of the TV to

block his view.

BERNIE’S MOM
Bernard.
“My Imaginary Friends” – Original Screenplay by Jason Wiese 15

BERNIE
Mom!

Bernie tries to shift so that he can look around his mom to

continue playing but it doesn’t work out so well.

BERNIE’S MOM
You’ve played enough today.

Bernie gives up and shuts off the game and TV.

BERNIE
(dejectedly)
Fine.

Bernie stands up, marches over to his bed and gets in it.

Bernie’s mom tucks him in.

BERNIE’S MOM
Good night son.

BERNIE
Good night mom.

BERNIE’S MOM
I love you.

BERNIE
I love you too mom.

Bernie’s mom kisses him on the forehead then collects his

dinner plate from the floor, turns off the light so that
it’s now pitch dark in the room and walks out.

NEXT MORNING – BERNIE’S BEDROOM

Bernie is sleeping peacefully in his bed when suddenly his

mom yells out to him.

BERNIE’S MOM (O.S.)

(yells)
Bernie! Time to wake up for
school.

Bernie wakes up, rubs his eyes, stretches in bed then gets
up and immediately walks over to his TV.
“My Imaginary Friends” – Original Screenplay by Jason Wiese 16

He turns on his TV, sits back down in the same place he was
sitting in the previous day and continues playing his video
game.

LATER ON

Bernie is still playing his game when his mother walks into
his room. She’s shocked to see him not ready for school
and playing his video game instead.

BERNIE’S MOM
Bernard! You need to go to school
right now! You’re not even dressed?

BERNIE
OK, OK, I’m going. Give me two
minutes.

BERNIE’S MOM
Hurry up or you’ll miss your bus…
and I can’t drive you to school
this morning.

Bernie shuts down his game, stands up and turns off his TV.

BERNIE
I’m going, I’m going.

INT. – BERNIE’S JUNIOR HIGH SCHOOL

CLASSROOM

Bernie is sitting in the middle of a classroom filled with

fellow sixth grade students.

The older, gray-haired female teacher at the front of the

room is teaching math in a relatively boring style.

All the while, Bernie is doodling in his notebook.

MATH TEACHER
Class, today we’re going to learn
about the exciting world of
percentages.

The teacher turns to the chalkboard and starts writing on

it.
“My Imaginary Friends” – Original Screenplay by Jason Wiese 17

MATH TEACHER (cont’d)

What is 10% of 100?

The teacher looks behind her to the rest of the class and
waits for an answer.

EVERYONE
10.

The teacher turns back to the chalkboard and writes on it

again.

MATH TEACHER
Very good! Now for something a
little more difficult…what’s 10%
of 200?

She turns back around to the rest of the class to hear the
answer.

EVERYONE
20.

The teacher claps her hands in excitement.

MATH TEACHER
Excellent class, I’m so proud of
you all. Now we’re going to do one
even harder, what is 30% of 200?

Bernie further concentrates on his doodling in his notebook

which is a picture of him, as Prince Valor, slaying a fire-
breathing dragon with a sword while the princess is locked
up in a cage behind the dragon.

After a few moments of silence while the students try to

think of the answer, the teacher just goes ahead and gives
it to them.

MATH TEACHER
OK, I understand that might have
been too difficult at this point.
The answer children is 60.
“My Imaginary Friends” – Original Screenplay by Jason Wiese 18

INT. – BERNIE’S HOUSE

LIVING ROOM

Bernie walks into his house after school and puts his
backpack down right besides the front door.

Again, his brother, Andy, is sitting in the living room

entranced by whatever he’s watching on TV and doesn’t
acknowledge him.

Bernie walks through the living room into the

KITCHEN

Where his mom is busy preparing dinner.

She’s got her back turned to him as she’s cutting up

vegetables by the sink, but nevertheless she hears him
enter.

BERNIE’S MOM
Hey sugarplum, how was school
today?

On this day, Bernie actually answers her.

BERNIE
It was fine mom.

BERNIE’S MOM
Would you like a snack?

BERNIE
No time, I have to continue playing
The Chronicles of Prince Valor.

Without slowing down, Bernie walks right through the

kitchen.

BERNIE’S BEDROOM

Bernie enters his room and shuts the door behind him.

He turns his TV on, starts up the video game and sits down
on the floor in the same spot that he’s been sitting in
when he’s played the game before.

He immediately gets engrossed in playing the game again.

“My Imaginary Friends” – Original Screenplay by Jason Wiese 19

LATER ON

With dinner plates stacked up next to him, Bernie continues

to play the game at night in darkness, with the only light
in the room again emanating from the TV.

KITCHEN

Beatrice’s mom and dad are in the kitchen cleaning the

dishes.

BERNIE’S MOM
He’s been playing that video game
nonstop, all week. Should we be
worried?

BERNIE’S DAD
(laughs)
No, not at all. This is what boys
do. We should be excited. I
haven’t seen him this happy in a
long time.

BERNIE’S MOM
You’re right. It’s so good to see
him with a smile on his face.

LATER ON

BERNIE’S BEDROOM

Bernie is still sitting in front of his TV playing the

video game. He is nearing the end of game.

VIDEO GAME

Bernie is on the final stage. Controlling the Prince

character, he’s fighting a dragon, dodging the fire from
his breath and jumping around to avoid him until he finally
nails it with a sword that he’s thrown.

The dragon falls off a bridge and the cage that he was
guarding behind him opens up and a princess is released
from it.

The princess runs out of the cage and immediately hugs the
prince that so bravely got rid of the dragon and set her
free.
“My Imaginary Friends” – Original Screenplay by Jason Wiese 20

BERNIE’S BEDROOM

A wide smile covers Bernie’s face when he realizes he’s

beat the game.

BERNIE
(softly to himself)
Yeah! Wow!

Then the realization sets in that since he’s beat the game,
he has nothing else to do now. So he begins to doze off in
front of the TV, bobbing his head uncontrollably in the
process.

LATER ON

Bernie is lying down sleeping in front of his TV while it’s

still on.

His parents quietly enter his room. His dad picks him up
and carries him over to his bed. Bernie mumbles in his
sleep as he’s being carried.

Once his dad lays him down, his mom tucks him in. Then she
grabs his stuffed animal, Theodore, from the nearby chair
and gives it to Bernie.

Bernie instinctively hugs Theodore.

BERNIE
(barely awake)
Mom?

BERNIE’S MOM
(whispers)
Shhhh. Good night my love.

As he holds Theodore tightly in his arms, Bernie’s eyelids

get heavy again and he falls back asleep while looking at
his other favorite stuffed animals – Murray and Mr.
Elephant – on the chair close by.

Bernie’s mom walks out of the room as Bernie’s dad turns

off the TV, leaves the room as well and closes the door
behind him.

The room turns pitch black and Bernie begins to have a

vivid dream about the video game that he’s just beaten.

EXT. – PRINCE VALOR’S CASTLE, MEDIEVAL TIMES – DUSK

With the sun going down behind the castle, a series of

guards march up a bridge and through the front gate.

INT. – PRINCE VALOR’S CASTLE

LARGE READING ROOM

PRINCE VALOR, an eleven year old who looks and sounds

exactly like Bernie but is dressed in regal attire, is
sitting in front of a fireplace reading a book.

Suddenly, there’s the sound of barking in the distance.

The barking gets closer and closer until his faithful
servant, MURRAY, a small Jack Russell terrier, runs into
the room and up to Prince Valor.

MURRAY
Prince Valor! Prince Valor!

Prince Valor stands up to see what the commotion is about.

PRINCE VALOR
What is it buddy?

MURRAY
It’s Princess Adorable.

PRINCE VALOR
What happened?

MURRAY
I was outside, all the way down by
the apple orchid giving myself my
usual evening walk when I saw the
evil dragon from Gloomy Glen enter.

PRINCE VALOR
What’s he doing in this part of
the kingdom?

MURRAY
I don’t know. But it gets worse.
Princess Adorable was in there
picking apples.
“My Imaginary Friends” – Original Screenplay by Jason Wiese 22

PRINCE VALOR
(sadly)
Ohhh no, Prince Adorable.

MURRAY
The dragon took her and flew away.

PRINCE VALOR
(shocked)
What?

MURRAY
She’s gone. He picked her up in
his claws and flew away. I guess
back to his dungeon.

PRINCE VALOR
Oh no. This is terrible. Princess
Adorable is so sweet and innocent.

MURRAY
We have to alert the king!

PRINCE VALOR
We can’t. Don’t you remember that
he and my mom set sail for the Land
of Enchantment today to negotiate a
trade agreement?

MURRAY
OK, then it’s up to us.

PRINCE VALOR
What do you mean?

MURRAY
The only way we’ll get the princess
back and returned to her rightful
place at the Castle of Virtue is
if we confront the dragon.

PRINCE VALOR
Then I’ll notify the guards and they
can assemble a team to squash the
dragon.

Prince Valor tries to walk out of the room but is stopped

by Murray who bites down on his ankle.
“My Imaginary Friends” – Original Screenplay by Jason Wiese 23

PRINCE VALOR
Owww! That hurt Murray!

MURRAY
Prince Valor, according to legend
only a person with royal bloodlines
has the inner strength to confront
and battle the dragon of Gloomy
Glen. Anyone else that confronts
him will met an almost certain
demise.

PRINCE VALOR
(in awe)
Whoa! Really?

MURRAY
Yes. We need to do this, you and
me.

PRINCE VALOR
How about if I assemble a team of
guards to go with us?

MURRAY
Sir, you know the guards will never
let you go on a mission this
dangerous. The king would have
their heads if he knew they’d allow
you to get into harm’s way.
(pauses)
We need to do this, together.

Prince Valor starts pacing around the room and wringing his
hands nervously.

PRINCE VALOR
(worriedly)
Ohhh, I don’t know about this.

Murray follows behind him back and forth as he paces around

the room.

MURRAY
What don’t you know about? She’s
a princess, you’re a prince.
You have to save her. It’s your
destiny.
“My Imaginary Friends” – Original Screenplay by Jason Wiese 24

PRINCE VALOR
I suppose. But that dragon lives
on the other side of the kingdom,
in a dark, distant land. They
say the sun never shines there and
the water breathes fire. And I
haven’t even talked about the
dragon himself yet.
(rubs his head in
distress)
Ohhh boy, he’s one scary fella.

MURRAY
That’s true but you can do it
Prince Valor.

PRINCE VALOR
My dad doesn’t even let me cross
the River of Purity and it’s only
down the road from the castle,
just over the hill.

MURRAY
Prince Valor, I’m your faithful
servant. I’m old and wise, 28
in dog years. I’ll protect you.

PRINCE VALOR
Still, it’s awfully dangerous
out there.

MURRAY
That may be so, but you can do
this. I have an unbelievable
amount of faith in you. All you
have to do is muster up all that
courage that I know you have inside
you. Focus that courage on the
one mission at hand – to defeat
the dragon and bring the young
princess home unharmed. You can
do this. I believe in you, now
you just need to believe in
yourself.

Prince Valor continues pacing around the room silently as

he thinks.

After a few moments, he stops and looks down at Murray.

“My Imaginary Friends” – Original Screenplay by Jason Wiese 25

PRINCE VALOR
OK, I’ll do it!

Murray barks in excitement.

MURRAY
That’s the spirit! What’s our
plan?

The prince walks over to a large table towards the opposite

side of the room, away from the fireplace. He clears
everything off of the table, grabs a map from the corner of
the room and spreads it out on the table.

Murray jumps up on a chair to get a better view.

PRINCE VALOR
OK, so this is a map of the entire
kingdom.

MURRAY
Is it to scale?

PRINCE VALOR
No, no it is not.

The prince points to two places on the map, directly

opposite each other.

PRINCE VALOR
OK, we are here…and the dragon
lives over here.

As he looks at the map on the table, the prince looks like

a General planning a military battle.

MURRAY
I’ll admit it. It looks far away.

With his finger, the prince traces a route from the castle
to the dragon’s dungeon on the other side of the kingdom.

PRINCE VALOR
I think this is the best route.
It’ll take us by the town square,
through a forest, across the plains
and finally to the dark land of
the dragon.

PRINCE VALOR (cont’d)

Yeah, I think that’s our best
path. What do you think?

Murray studies the map intensely before rendering his

decision.

MURRAY
Yes, I concur.

PRINCE VALOR
So now that we have our route,
ummm, how are we going to defeat
the dragon?

MURRAY
Well again, legend has it there
are two ways to defeat the dragon.
One, ironically enough, is with
fire.

PRINCE VALOR
Wait, fire? But doesn’t he breathe
fire?

MURRAY
Yes, that’s why I said it was ironic.
Apparently he can breathe it, he
just doesn’t like to feel it.

PRINCE VALOR
What’s the second way?

MURRAY
The other way to defeat him is with
the Sword of Alchemy.

PRINCE VALOR
(in awe)
The Sword of Alchemy? What’s that?

MURRAY
It’s a special sword, it’s said to
have mystical powers.

Murray walks over to a bookcase and looks through the books

until he finds the one he’s looking for.

He grabs the book, puts it on the table and opens it up.

“My Imaginary Friends” – Original Screenplay by Jason Wiese 27

MURRAY
There’s a picture of it somewhere
in here.

Murray starts thumbing through the book until he finds a

page that shows the picture of the sword.

MURRAY
Here, here it is. Look.

Prince Valor takes a look at the picture of the sword.

It’s a rather small sword but it’s very majestic with
jewels encrusted around the base.

PRINCE VALOR
(in awe)
It’s beautiful!
(pauses)
So where is the sword?

MURRAY
That’s a mystery.

PRINCE VALOR
How come?

MURRAY
Up until recently, the sword was
guarded in the sacred Celestial
Temple by three knights. But one
night it was stolen right from
the temple.

PRINCE VALOR
Where were the knights who were
guarding the sword?

MURRAY
They were there, the sword was
stolen right from under them.
Whoever stole it was a very
cunning individual.

PRINCE VALOR
So how do we find the sword?

MURRAY
(thinking)
I don’t know, I don’t know.
“My Imaginary Friends” – Original Screenplay by Jason Wiese 28

PRINCE VALOR
Maybe we should just with fire.

MURRAY
Maybe. But the fire will be
tricky. The dragon can easily
turn the fire against us.

PRINCE VALOR
Oh boy. This should be interesting.

MURRAY
It should.

PRINCE VALOR
So when should we leave?

MURRAY
We have no time, we have to leave
now.

PRINCE VALOR
(worriedly)
But it’s getting dark out.

MURRAY
Prince Valor, you’re not acting
courageously. Every second we
wait means another second that
Princess Adorable spends in that
dragon’s lair. There’s no telling
what might happen to her the longer
she’s there.

PRINCE VALOR
Right, right. We’ll go tonight.

MURRAY
Good. I’ll stock up on provisions.

PRINCE VALOR
Now, our first problem though.

MURRAY
What’s that?

PRINCE VALOR
How are we going to be able to get

by the guards? I’m not allowed to
leave the castle premises after
dark.

MURRAY
Don’t worry, leave that to me.

LATER ON

LARGE HALLWAY IN THE CASTLE

A door opens in the hallway and out walks Prince Valor on

his tippy toes, trying his hardest not to make a sound. He
has a knapsack over his shoulder.

Prince Valor walks slowly and quietly down the hallway.

Murray comes up from behind him, wagging his tail.

PRINCE VALOR
(whispers)
Hey boy. So what’s the plan?

MURRAY
(whispers)
Just follow me. I’m going to
create a diversion.

Murray and Prince Valor continue walking down the hallway.

EXT. – CASTLE COURTYARD – NIGHT

Murray and Prince Valor hide by the front door of the

castle. They watch the front gate as it opens up slowly
and a group of guards march in.

MURRAY
(whispers)
I’ll meet you by the bushes in
front of the lake right outside the
castle. Try your best to stay in
the shadows.

Once the guards march in, Murray runs out of the castle
while Prince Valor stays behind inside, still hiding from
view.
“My Imaginary Friends” – Original Screenplay by Jason Wiese 30

Murray runs to the corner of the courtyard, away from the

castle and the front gate, and starts barking – loudly and
furiously.

This catches the attention of three soldiers that are

guarding the front gate.

CASTLE GUARD #1
Hey, what’s Murray barking at?

CASTLE GUARD #2
I don’t know, let’s check it out.

The three guards walk over to Murray to see what he’s

barking at.

One of the guards gets down on his knee and starts petting
him.

CASTLE GUARD #1
Hey pal, hey boy. What’s the matter?
What are you barking at? Do you
see a rat?

As the guards are occupied with Murray, Prince Valor is in

the background slowly walking alongside a wall under the
cover of darkness.

He makes it out the front gate just as it begins to slowly

start closing.

CASTLE GUARD #1
Ahh boy? Do you see something?

Once Murray sees Prince Valor walk out of the front gate
from the corner of his eye, he stops barking.

CASTLE GUARD #2
He just stopped?

CASTLE GUARD #1
Ahhh, it must’ve just been a shadow
or something.
(pauses)
Come on, let’s go back to our post.

As soon as the three guards turn their backs to walk away,

Murray hightails it over to the front gate and goes under
it just as it’s about to close.
“My Imaginary Friends” – Original Screenplay by Jason Wiese 31

CASTLE GUARD #2
Murray, would you like a doggy
biscuit?

The guard waits to hear a bark but there’s only silence.

CASTLE GUARD #2
Murray?

The three guards turn around and don’t see Murray anywhere.

CASTLE GUARD #2
Hey where did he go?

CASTLE GUARD #1
Ahhh, who knows. You know Murray,
he probably ran back into the castle
to eat.

CASTLE GUARD #2
That little dog is always hungry.

EXT. – OUTSIDE THE CASTLE’S WALLS - NIGHT

Prince Valor is sitting behind a bush by a lake that is

sparkling under the moonlight.

Suddenly Murray comes running out of the darkness and into

Prince Valor’s open arms.

PRINCE VALOR
Hey boy! Good job boy! Good job!

Murray licks Valor’s face as the prince laughs then he

jumps around in his lap.

PRINCE VALOR
(laughs)
OK boy, OK. Stop it!

MURRAY
Sorry, I was excited.

Prince Valor stands up and takes a map out of his knapsack.

PRINCE VALOR
OK, thanks for getting us out of
the castle. I’ll take it from

here.
(points towards the
east)
Let’s starting walking.

Prince Valor and Murray start walking around the lake, then
through an open field as they head to a large forest up
ahead.

EXT. – OPEN FIELD – NIGHT

Prince Valor and Murray are walking along a large open

field that is lit only by the moonlight.

As they’re walking, Murray hears something behind them in

the distance so he stops walking which makes the Prince
stop too.

MURRAY
What’s that?

PRINCE VALOR
What? Do you hear something?

MURRAY
I think so. It’s coming from the
distance, behind us.

Murray and Prince Valor turn around and look.

MURRAY
Hear that?

PRINCE VALOR
Yeah, I do.

MURRAY
It’s getting closer.

Suddenly the sky is filled with literally thousands of bats

and they’re flying right towards Prince Valor and Murray.

PRINCE VALOR
Bats!!!

The prince and Murray turn around and run as fast as they
can towards the forest which can provide them cover.
“My Imaginary Friends” – Original Screenplay by Jason Wiese 33

The bats gets closer and closer to them as they run.

Prince Valor trips over a rock and falls down. Once he

falls he’s surrounded by about 10-12 bats.

PRINCE VALOR
Oh no!

Murray, who is still running, turns his head and notices

that the prince has fallen.

He turns around and runs back to the prince. Once he gets

back to him, he jumps up a few times to scare the bats
away.

This gives the prince enough time to stand up.

PRINCE VALOR
Thanks Murray!

Once he’s up, him and Murray continue running towards the
forest.

The bats have grown in numbers and are flying lower and
lower, closer to the prince and Murray.

EXT. – FOREST – NIGHT

As they get to the forest’s edge, they both hit the ground
and land on their stomachs.

RPINCE VALOR
Get down!

The bats fly right into the trees of the forest and
disappear.

Once all the bats are gone, the prince and Murray stand up.

PRINCE VALOR
Whew! That was close.

MURRAY
I know.

The prince and Murray wipe the dirt off of themselves.

“My Imaginary Friends” – Original Screenplay by Jason Wiese 34

PRINCE VALOR
Thanks for fighting off those bats
for me back there.

MURRAY
That’s what man’s best friend is
for.

PRINCE VALOR
OK, well here’s the forest.

MURRAY
Yep, this is the forest.

PRINCE VALOR
I guess we should, ahhh, go in.

MURRAY
Yeah, I guess we should.

Prince Valor and Murray stand at the dense forest’s edge

and think about going in.

PRINCE VALOR
It sure is dark in there.

MURRAY
I know. We need a torch or
something.

Prince Valor puts down his knapsack and takes out a

lantern.

PRINCE VALOR
Luckily I came prepared and brought
a lantern.

MURRAY
Great, now we just need to light
a fire for it. I’m assuming you
don’t know how to light a fire?

PRINCE VALOR
Why would you say that?

MURRAY
Prince Valor, you’re a prince.
Hence you’re name. I can’t imagine

you know anything about roughing
it.

PRINCE VALOR
See Murray, that’s where you’re
wrong. My dad takes me camping
once a year during the summer.
I’m quite adept at roughing it.

The prince takes a couple steps into the dense forest and
finds two sticks.

Then he steps back out to the edge of the forest, kneels

down and starts rubbing the two sticks together to create a
fire.

After a few seconds, the sticks begin to smolder then a

fire is created.

PRINCE VALOR
See it wasn’t that hard.

MURRAY
I stand corrected. I’m impressed.

The prince lights the lantern.

PRINCE VALOR
OK, let’s go in.

The prince and Murray both take a deep breath then slowly
walk into the forest.

They walk along a small path that is surrounded by brush

and trees. Prince Valor is leading the way with the
lantern.

There are sets of spooky eyes showing up everywhere

intermittently within the darkness of the trees.
After walking for a while, the prince finally gets the
feeling that someone or something is watching them.

PRINCE VALOR
Murray, I feel like we’re being
watched.

MURRAY
You think?
“My Imaginary Friends” – Original Screenplay by Jason Wiese 36

PRINCE VALOR
Yes. You don’t get that feeling?
You’re supposed to be the observant
one.

MURRAY
It’s just your imagination; it’s
all in your head.

PRINCE VALOR
I supposed you’re right.

The two continue to walk along the path as the spooky eyes
continue to follow them.

LATER ON

Prince Valor and Murray continue walking when suddenly they

both fall down a hole in the middle of the path. It was
covered with leaves and branches which is why they didn’t
see it.

INT. – HOLE

The prince and Murray fall down a hole that seemingly goes
on forever. They’re both shouting out as they fall.

INT. – CAVE

Finally they hit the ground hard. The prince hits first
then Murray lands on him.

PRINCE VALOR
Owww, that hurt.

MURRAY
That’s an understatement.

The two stand up and wipe off the dirt again.

PRINCE VALOR
My bum really hurts.

MURRAY
I’m OK, actually.

PRINCE VALOR
Well you did land right on me.
“My Imaginary Friends” – Original Screenplay by Jason Wiese 37

MURRAY
Yeah, your stomach provided me
with plenty of cushion.

PRINCE VALOR
Hey, my mom has me on a diet and
I exercise two times a day. Pretty
soon I’m going to have abs of
steel. You watch.

MURRAY
I believe you.

The prince and Murray look around the dark cave. Valor
holds up the lantern and turns it in all directions to get
an idea of how big the cave is.

PRINCE VALOR
So what do you think this is?

MURRAY
I don’t know, a cave of some sort.
How are we going to get out of
here?

Prince Valor looks at his map.

PRINCE VALOR
I don’t know. This isn’t on my
map.

MURRAY
I figured it wouldn’t be.

As the prince moves the lantern around he sees an opening

in the corner.

PRINCE VALOR
I see a little opening over there.
Let’s check it out.

Murray heads towards the opening first, followed by Prince

Valor.

They walk slowly down one corridor, then another one. The
corridors are lit by torches hanging on the wall.

As they walk into another corridor they see some old bones
scattered about.
“My Imaginary Friends” – Original Screenplay by Jason Wiese 38

PRINCE VALOR
(worriedly)
Ummm, what are those?

MURRAY
They’re bones.

PRINCE VALOR
Who do you think they’re from?

MURRAY
It’s probably best if we don’t
know. It’s probably best if we
don’t even think about it.

PRINCE VALOR
I’m scared.

MURRAY
There’s nothing to be scared about.

The two walk into another corridor which leads to a big

room. Standing in the corner of the room is a huge, scary-
looking SPIDER.

MURRAY
OK, I think it’s time to be scared
now.

PRINCE VALOR
Oh my god, that’s a big spider.

The spider is hissing at them as it walks back and forth on

the other side of the room.

MURRAY
Let’s make a break for it.

As the prince and Murray try to run towards an exit in the

room, the slow moving spider suddenly sprints to block
their escape.

The two are blocked into a corner by the spider. The huge
spider comes right up to Prince Valor’s face and hisses
loudly in it. Drool from the spider hits the prince’s
head.
“My Imaginary Friends” – Original Screenplay by Jason Wiese 39

After a few tense-filled seconds, Murray quickly grabs the

lantern from Valor’s hand, puts it in front of one of the
spider’s legs and blows on the fire.

The fire temporarily spooks the spider which gives them

enough time to escape.

The prince and Murray run through corridor after corridor

to get away, but they’re closely followed by the spider who
is still hissing loudly.

The two take a quick turn into another corridor, as soon as

they turn they find that there is a web blocking the
pathway.

The prince and Murray get down on the ground and crawl
underneath the web to get to the other side.

As soon as they make it under, the spider scurries around

the corner into the corridor and immediately gets stuck in
the web. He’s unable to free himself.

The two stand up and look at the spider helplessly stuck in

the web, they are a mere inches away from him.

The spider tries to reach out its’ legs to grab them but to
no avail.

PRINCE VALOR
Whew! That was close.

MURRAY
You said it.

PRINCE VALOR
Let’s find our way out of here
now.

The prince and Murray continue walking down corridors until

they come to a vine hanging from a hole high up.

PRINCE VALOR
Look, a vine.

MURRAY
Do you think it’s sturdy?

Valor gives the vine a hard tug.

“My Imaginary Friends” – Original Screenplay by Jason Wiese 40

PRINCE VALOR
It seems pretty sturdy.

MURRAY
I’ll go first to test it out.

PRINCE VALOR
You just want to go first so that
you have something soft to land
on in case we fall.

MURRAY
You got me.

Murray jumps up on the vine and climbs up it, he’s followed

closely by Prince Valor.

EXT. – FOREST – NIGHT

They both climb all the way up the vine and out of the
hole.

As soon as they’re up, they lay down on the ground, clearly

exhausted.

PRINCE VALOR
Awww Murray, I’m exhausted.

They’re both breathing heavily, trying to catch their

breath.

MURRAY
I guess I’m not in as good of shape
as I thought.

Prince Valor stands up and tries to help Murray up.

PRINCE VALOR
Come on buddy, let’s go. We have
a lot of ground to cover.

MURRAY
OK, I’m up, I’m up.

The two continue walking along the path further into the
forest.

LATER ON
“My Imaginary Friends” – Original Screenplay by Jason Wiese 41

The prince and Murray come to a river that cuts right

through the middle of the forest.

MURRAY
This looks like a good place to
set up camp for the night. A good
water supply, a little bit of an
open, flat area for us to build
a fire.

PRINCE VALOR
I agree. Let’s get to work.

Valor drops his knapsack on the ground and starts emptying

it out.

LATER ON

The two are sitting around a campfire by the water’s edge.

The spooky eyes continue to pop up intermittently in the
darkness of the trees.

PRINCE VALOR
What do you know about this dragon?

MURRAY
I’ve heard many stories about him.

PRINCE VALOR
(intrigued)
Oh yeah? Like what?

MURRAY
Prince Valor, you don’t want to
hear the stories.

PRINCE VALOR
Come on, yeah I do.

MURRAY
Well, there’s not much story to
tell. Just as you’d think, the
dragon is evil, pure evil. He’s
been known to kidnap people from
the villages surrounding the castle.
He usually attacks at sundown or
at night under cover of darkness.
“My Imaginary Friends” – Original Screenplay by Jason Wiese 42

PRINCE VALOR
What usually happens to them?

MURRAY
I don’t know.

PRINCE VALOR
You don’t know?

After a dramatic pause.

MURRAY
They’re not heard from again.

PRINCE VALOR
They’re not?

MURRAY
No, they disappear. They either
live the rest of their lives at
the dragon’s dungeon or worse.

PRINCE VALOR
(naively)
What could be worse than living
in the dungeon?

Murray thinks about explaining himself for a moment then he

decides to let it go.

MURRAY
It’s late, let’s get some sleep.

Valor and Murray sit quietly for a few seconds until Valor
breaks the silence.

PRINCE VALOR
How come no one’s stopped the dragon
yet?

MURRAY
Come on prince, get some sleep.

PRINCE VALOR
I’m not tired.
(pauses)
So how come no one’s managed to
stop the dragon yet?
“My Imaginary Friends” – Original Screenplay by Jason Wiese 43

MURRAY
Well, a couple of reasons. The
first one, in all honesty, is that
the dragon has usually kidnapped
lowly peasants…people that the
king doesn’t care about.

PRINCE VALOR
(interrupts)
Hey, that’s my father you’re talking
about.

MURRAY
I know, I’m just telling you the
truth.

PRINCE VALOR
Fine.

MURRAY
This is the first time that the
dragon has ever captured a member
of the royal family. He’s getting
bold.

PRINCE VALOR
And what’s the second reason?

MURRAY
It’s too dangerous. The dragon
lives all the way on the other side
of the kingdom in a fortress-like
castle. It’s a dark, foreboding
place. Also he’s got a dungeon
below his castle that offers him
extra protection too. And he can
fly too, which allows him to come
just as quickly as he goes; and
the sky gives him an automatic
escape route.

PRINCE VALOR
If it’s too dangerous, why do you
think we can do this?

MURRAY
Because we have the element of
surprise.
“My Imaginary Friends” – Original Screenplay by Jason Wiese 44

PRINCE VALOR
OK.

MURRAY
And we’re small. If the dragon
is ever going to be confronted,
he thinks it’s going to come from
the king’s army. He’s not thinking
that he’d have to battle a tiny,
eleven year old prince and his dog.
Thus he won’t be prepared for us.
We can sneak into his castle and
maybe we can even set the princess
free without him knowing.

PRINCE VALOR
I see.

MURRAY
Trust me we can do this.

PRINCE VALOR
I have faith. I believe now, I
know we can do this.

MURRAY
Good.

The prince and Murray sit quietly for a few more seconds,
then Valor breaks the silence again.

PRINCE VALOR
What do you think we can expect
when we confront the dragon?

MURRAY
I don’t know, but I can tell you
that the troubles we just had with
that spider down there will pale
in comparison with the trouble we
can expect from the dragon.

PRINCE VALOR
(sarcastically)
Oh great.

Prince Valor and Murray sit quietly on the ground until

they fall asleep.
“My Imaginary Friends” – Original Screenplay by Jason Wiese 45

EXT. – FOREST - MORNING

With the two still sleeping and the fire dead, a snake
slithers out of the trees of the forest, down the path and
over to their camp.

The snake slowly climbs up on Prince Valor, slithering all

around him.

Murray wakes up and, in his grogginess, he’s startled to

notice a snake crawling around the prince.

Murray kicks the prince to wake him up, he doesn’t budge so

he kicks him again, this time even harder.

The prince finally wakes up and screams immediately when he

notices a snake slithering around him.

PRINCE VALOR
Oh no!

MURRAY
Prince Valor, don’t move.

PRINCE VALOR
That’s easy for you to say, you
don’t have a python around your
neck.

MURRAY
Calm down, drama prince, it’s not
a python.

PRINCE VALOR
A snake is a snake to me. I order
you to do something about it!

MURRAY
OK, OK, let me think for a moment.

Murray looks around the campsite for ideas but can’t figure
out a plan.

MURRAY
Hmmmm.

The snake starts slowly constricting around Prince Valor.

“My Imaginary Friends” – Original Screenplay by Jason Wiese 46

PRINCE VALOR
(impatiently)
Hurry Murray!

MURRAY
I’m thinking! I’m thinking!

Murray sees a big branch on the ground by the path so he

runs over to it, grabs it in his mouth and runs back to
Valor.

He takes the branch and starts hitting the snake. A few

swings accidentally hit Prince Valor on the arm.

PRINCE VALOR
Owww, stop hitting me!

MURRAY
Sorry Prince, I’m just trying to
get the snake off of you.

PRINCE VALOR
Well, hit him, not me.

The snake finally relinquishes his grip from Prince Valor

and slithers off of him.

Prince Valor grabs his throat and coughs.

MURRAY
Are you OK Prince Valor?

PRINCE VALOR
(coughing)
Yes, I’m OK.

The snake slithers back down the path, when he gets to the
edge of the trees he turns and looks back at the prince and
Murray.

SNAKE
You didn’t have to hit me with a
branch so many times. I have
feelings too you know.
(pauses)
You could’ve just asked nicely to
get off.
“My Imaginary Friends” – Original Screenplay by Jason Wiese 47

MURRAY
(perplexed)
Sorry.

PRINCE VALOR
(perplexed)
Yeah, ummm, sorry.

The snake heads back into the trees.

PRINCE VALOR (cont’d)

That was a little bit odd.

MURRAY
You got that right.

PRINCE VALOR
Let’s pack up and continue on our
way.

MURRAY
How are we going to cross the
river? It’s not like we have a
boat.

Prince Valor takes out his map and studies it for a bit.

PRINCE VALOR
Looking at my map, it looks like
the river thins out towards the
east. So let’s just walk along
the river until it gets small
enough to walk across.

The prince and Murray start packing up their camp.

LATER ON ALONG THE RIVER

The two are walking along the river until they get to a
point where it’s only 15-20 feet across.

PRINCE VALOR
OK, I think this is the skinniest
part of the river. I think.

MURRAY
I wonder how deep it is.

Prince Valor surveys the river.

“My Imaginary Friends” – Original Screenplay by Jason Wiese 48

PRINCE VALOR
Yeah, me too, especially since I
can’t swim.

MURRAY
How come you don’t know how to
swim again?

PRINCE VALOR
I don’t know, I guess I’ve just
been busy with my chess lessons
lately.

MURRAY
Ahhh, I see.

PRINCE VALOR
So, there’s only one way to find
out how deep this river is.

Valor looks at Murray.

MURRAY
OK, fine. Once again man’s best
friend to the rescue.

Murray sticks his paw into the river.

MURRAY
Ohhh, it’s a little chilly.

PRINCE VALOR
Come on buddy, get in there.

MURRAY
In a second. I have to get used
to the water temperature. It’s
cold you know.

PRINCE VALOR
OK, when you’re ready.

Murray takes a deep breath then gets into the river. He

swims across and stops half way.

PRINCE VALOR
Can you feel the ground?
“My Imaginary Friends” – Original Screenplay by Jason Wiese 49

MURRAY
No, not really. I’m going to see
how deep it is.

Murray sinks down into the water then he pops up after a

couple seconds.

MURRAY
It’s about two and a half feet,
no more than three.

PRINCE VALOR
Good.

Prince Valor grabs his knapsack and gets into the water.
He screams out after feeling the coldness of the river.

PRINCE VALOR
(screams)
Owwww! It’s cold!

MURRAY
I told you.

Murray continues treading water in the middle of the river

as he waits for the prince.

The prince slowly walks across the river. As the water

gets deeper, he holds his knapsack high over his head so
that it doesn’t get wet.

Valor meets up with Murray in the middle of the river then

they head to the other side. Murray’s leading the way
swimming as Valor continues walking behind him.

As soon as they get out on the other side of the river,

Murray shakes the water off of him.

Valor watches then mimics Murray by trying to shake the

water off of himself, to no avail.

PRINCE VALOR
I’m soaked.

MURRAY
I’m fine.
“My Imaginary Friends” – Original Screenplay by Jason Wiese 50

PRINCE VALOR
You’re lucky. You can just shake
the water off your fur. I don’t
have that luxury.

Murray turns around and sees that there is another forest

in front of them.

MURRAY
(sarcastically)
Oh great, another forest to go
through.

Prince Valor takes his map out and looks at it again.

PRINCE VALOR
Yeah, we’re only half way through
the forest. So let’s get going!

The prince picks up his knapsack and runs into the forest
followed by Murray.

LATER ON IN THE FOREST

Prince Valor and Murray are walking along the path in a

particularly dense part of the forest.

Suddenly a bunch of tree branches behind them start to

shake.

Murray stands still to listen for it again.

MURRAY
Prince Valor, did you hear that?

PRINCE VALOR
I don’t know, I don’t think I heard
anything.

Prince Valor stops walking and looks around the forest with
Murray.

The forest is silent.

PRINCE VALOR
See, it was nothing. Let’s go.

The prince and Murray continue walking.

“My Imaginary Friends” – Original Screenplay by Jason Wiese 51

After a few more paces, another set of branches shake.

Murray stands still again, looks into the forest and sniffs
around.

MURRAY
There it is again.

Murray focuses on a particular part of the forest. He sees

a shadowy figure hiding behind a few trees.

MURRAY
I think we’re being watched.

PRINCE VALOR
You think?

MURRAY
Yes. Over there, in the trees.

Prince Valor walks over to the trees to take a deeper look.

MURRAY
See it?

The prince eyes the shadowy figure in the trees.

PRINCE VALOR
Yeah, I think I see something.

Suddenly, the branches shake again as the prince stands

right in front of them.

This sudden movement scares Prince Valor and he runs back

into the middle of the path, behind Murray.

PRINCE VALOR
There’s something definitely in
there.

Murray goes sniffing up to the trees.

Once the prince regains his composure, he shouts out to the

shadowy figure.

PRINCE VALOR

I brought my attack dog and he’s
not afraid to attack!

Murray looks back at Valor in a state of disbelief.

MURRAY
(whispers)
Really?

PRINCE VALOR
(whispers)
Shhh, just go with it.

Prince Valor waits for a response from the shadowy figure

for a few seconds, but all is quiet.

PRINCE VALOR
(shouts)
I mean it! I’ll send my dog in
to get you out.
(whispers to Murray)
Murray, start barking. Act
threatening.

MURRAY
I don’t know how threatening I can
be, but I’ll try.
(pauses)
Here it goes.

Murray starts barking at the trees but once again the trees
are quiet.

PRINCE VALOR
(shouts)
I’m going to give you five seconds
to come out from behind the trees.
(pauses)
1…2…3.

Suddenly THEODORE, a big teddy bear looking creature,

slowly approaches from behind the trees.

THEODORE
OK, OK, but please do not release
your attack dog on me.
“My Imaginary Friends” – Original Screenplay by Jason Wiese 53

He’s shaking, scared of being attacked by the dog, and

walks up to Prince Valor.

Murray watches Theodore very closely and follows him as he

walks over to Valor. He barks at him and nips at his
ankles.

PRINCE VALOR
Who are you?

THEODORE
(scared)
I’m Theodore.

PRINCE VALOR
What are you doing here?

THEODORE
Well I live here.

Prince Valor still looks skeptically at him.

THEODORE
Please your majesty, please tell
your dog to stop.

PRINCE VALOR
Murray, heel!

Murray stops barking and stands at attention.

THEODORE
Thank you sir!

PRINCE VALOR
I’m no sir. I’m an eleven year
old boy.

THEODORE
Thank you your majesty.

PRINCE VALOR
Why are you calling me your majesty?

THEODORE
Because you’re a prince.

PRINCE VALOR
How do you know I’m a prince?
“My Imaginary Friends” – Original Screenplay by Jason Wiese 54

Theodore points to an emblem on Prince Valor’s clothing.

THEODORE
Because of your royal emblem.

PRINCE VALOR
You recognize this?

THEODORE
Yes, I’d recognize it anywhere.
I’m pretty worldly when it comes
to things around the kingdom.

PRINCE VALOR
So you said your name is Theodore?

THEODORE
That’s right. I live out here in
the forest.

PRINCE VALOR
Where’s your family?

THEODORE
Sadly I don’t have any family.
I’m an orphan.

PRINCE VALOR
Why don’t you have any family?

THEODORE
The humans came and captured them
one day. I was down by the river
taking a bath, that’s why I wasn’t
caught. I came back just in time
to see my mom, my two sisters and
my younger brother being led away
in ropes and chains. I never did
see what happened to my dad.
(pauses)
I wish I was bigger because I
could’ve done something then. I
felt so helpless. I watched them
get taken from me and I didn’t do
anything about it.

PRINCE VALOR
I’m sorry to hear that.
“My Imaginary Friends” – Original Screenplay by Jason Wiese 55

THEODORE
You’re not here to capture me, are
you? Am I supposed to be another
trophy for the royal family?

PRINCE VALOR
No, not at all.

Theodore, who is relieved to hear that from Valor, wipes

the sweat off his brow and leans against a rock.

THEODORE
Whew, that’s a relief.
(pauses)
So what brings you to these parts
of the forest? I don’t ever see
humans around here. At least not
humans that just seem to be passing
by. And I definitely don’t ever
see royalty.

PRINCE VALOR
We’re going to save Princess
Adorable.

THEODORE
Ohhh dear, a princess is in trouble!

PRINCE VALOR
Yes, she was taken by the evil
dragon from Gloomy Glen.

THEODORE
Ohhh, that sounds awful.

PRINCE VALOR
Yeah, so we’re going to rescue her.

Theodore looks at both Murray and Prince Valor.

THEODORE
Just you two?

PRINCE VALOR
Yes, just us.

THEODORE
Do you think you’ll be able to
handle that?
“My Imaginary Friends” – Original Screenplay by Jason Wiese 56

PRINCE VALOR
I don’t know but we’re going to
try.

THEODORE
Do you need some more help?

PRINCE VALOR
Do you know who could help?

THEODORE
Me. I could.

PRINCE VALOR
Are you sure you want to get involved?
This could be dangerous.

THEODORE
That’s OK. I have nothing left here.
Besides, it’d be nice to feel like
part of a group again.

Prince Valor looks at Murray.

PRINCE VALOR
What do you think buddy?

MURRAY
Well, if he’s up to it, let’s do it.

PRINCE VALOR
OK Theodore, you can come with us.

THEODORE
Ohhh, thank you, thank you, thank
you!

PRINCE VALOR
I’m Prince Valor, and this is my
dog, Murray.

Prince Valor shakes Theodore’s hand and Murray jumps up on

Theodore as he wags his tail.

THEODORE
Nice to meet you both.

PRINCE VALOR
Do you need to grab anything?
“My Imaginary Friends” – Original Screenplay by Jason Wiese 57

THEODORE
Nope, I’m ready.

MURRAY
I like it, low maintenance.

The three of them start walking along the path.

THEODORE
So how long have you been walking
for?

PRINCE VALOR
About a day.

THEODORE
How much longer do you think it’ll
take to get to the dragon.

PRINCE VALOR
Probably another day or so.

MURRAY
We’re getting light on supplies
though.

PRINCE VALOR
Are we?

MURRAY
Yeah, I was looking through your
knapsack earlier today for a
biscuit. I didn’t see that much
food left in there.

PRINCE VALOR
Ohhh, that’s not good.

THEODORE
I know of a marketplace on the
edge of the forest. We can go
there and resupply.

PRINCE VALOR
Great, lead the way.
“My Imaginary Friends” – Original Screenplay by Jason Wiese 58

EXT. – MARKETPLACE – DAY

Prince Valor, Murray and Theodore emerge from the forest

and walk into a large open-air marketplace.

The marketplace is bustling with activity. There are

stands set-up everywhere with vendors hawking their goods –
everything from food to jewelry to rugs, etc.

The place is packed with people shopping.

The three slowly navigate through the marketplace.

Prince Valor walks up to one stand that has a bunch of

fruit on it. He picks up an apple and studies it, then he
picks up another apple and looks at it.

PRINCE VALOR
They’re bad. Spoiled. Most of
them anyways.

THEODORE
Oh, that’s not good.

PRINCE VALOR
We’ll keep looking.

The three continue looking through the marketplace. They

walk by many stands that are hawking well known direct
response products like Ron Popeil’s rotisserie oven, the
Sham Wow, Proactiv, Bumpits, Iron Gym, OxiClean, Tool Band-
it, Pocket Fisherman, Hairspray Paint, etc.

Theodore, who’s walking behind the other two, goes off by

himself to a stand while Valor and Murray continue walking.

After a few steps, Prince Valor notices that Theodore is

missing.

PRINCE VALOR
Hey, where did Theodore go?

Murray looks around.

MURRAY
I don’t know.

PRINCE VALOR
Well, let’s go look for him.
“My Imaginary Friends” – Original Screenplay by Jason Wiese 59

Valor and Murray start looking around for him.

SNUGGIE STAND

Theodore is in front of a stand being pitched to buy a

Snuggie by a VENDOR. The vendor is holding a Snuggie and
showing it to him.

SNUGGIE VENDOR
It keeps you warm during those pesky
cold winter nights in hibernation.
No longer do you have to gather up
leaves and branches for a makeshift
coat, you can just use this. And
the best thing is it has sleeves!
So when you’re reading a book or
eating a bowl of porridge, you
don’t have to worry about your
blanket falling off you.

THEODORE
It does look like it’s very practical.
Can I feel it?

SNUGGIE VENDOR
Yes, of course.

Theodore reaches out and feels the Snuggie.

THEODORE
Oh, it feels so soft.

SNUGGIE VENDOR
It is.

Prince Valor and Murray walk up behind Theodore.

PRINCE VALOR
There you are Theodore. What are
you doing?

THEODORE
Prince Valor, feel how soft this
Snuggie is!

Prince Valor feels the Snuggie just to make him happy.

“My Imaginary Friends” – Original Screenplay by Jason Wiese 60

PRINCE VALOR
Yes, it’s very soft. Come on,
Theodore we don’t have time for
silly things like this, we have
to go.

THEODORE
OK.

Prince Valor grabs Theodore’s arm and drags him away.

SNUGGIE VENDOR
Shall I wrap this up for you?

THEODORE
I guess not. I have to go.

CENTER OF THE MARKETPLACE

The three of them are standing in the marketplace looking

around.

Prince Valor notices a large stand with all types of goods

being sold at it. There’s a group of people standing
around it.

PRINCE VALOR
Let’s go check out that stand over
there. It looks like they have
some good stuff.

Valor, Murray and Theodore walk over to

THE EVIL VENDOR’S STAND

The three are rifling through the different products on the

stand. Then the EVIL VENDOR, a very tall, slender,
menacing-looking middle-aged man, walks over to them.

The vendor towers over them from behind the stand. When he
talks, he even sounds scary.

EVIL VENDOR
Can I help you boys?

The evil vendor just stares at the three with a devilish

smirk on his face.
“My Imaginary Friends” – Original Screenplay by Jason Wiese 61

PRINCE VALOR
(scared)
Ummm, we’re just looking for
right now.

EVIL VENDOR
OK, well, just remember…

The vendor turns around and points to a sign hanging behind

him.

EVIL VENDOR (cont’d)

You break it, you buy it.

The vendor stares at the three for a few moments longer

then walks away.

THEODORE
Wow, he’s scary.

MURRAY
I know.

THEODORE
Prince Valor, let’s go. We can
shop somewhere else.

Prince Valor is still rifling through the stand.

PRINCE VALOR
No, wait. There’s a lot of good
stuff here though.

THEODORE
Maybe so, but this place gives me
the creeps.

PRINCE VALOR
Relax. Don’t be such a nervous
Nelly. Everything will be just
fine.

THEODORE
OK, I trust you.

Valor picks up an apple, studies it and then shows it to

Murray.
“My Imaginary Friends” – Original Screenplay by Jason Wiese 62

PRINCE VALOR
See Murray. The vendor might be
a bit strange but he has really
good apples.

The vendor comes back over to Prince Valor.

EVIL VENDOR
Say, you look like you’re dressed
in royal clothing.

PRINCE VALOR
(naively)
Well I am, I’m Prince Valor.

EVIL VENDOR
(menacingly)
Ohhhh, a prince!

PRINCE VALOR
(naively)
That’s right, my dad is the King.

EVIL VENDOR
Ohhh how wonderful! I have the
king’s very own son right in front
of me at my little stand. What a
special day!

The vendor stays quiet for a few moments as he thinks up a

plan.

EVIL VENDOR
Come, come to the backroom. I
have a lot of items for sale back
there that are not available to
the general public. It’s the least
I can do for a prince.

The vendor walks over to the curtain behind the stand and
opens it up to reveal a small room filled with food and
clothing.

EVIL VENDOR
Come young prince.

Prince Valor walks over to the curtain, he’s followed by

Murray and Theodore.
“My Imaginary Friends” – Original Screenplay by Jason Wiese 63

The vendor lets the prince in but he stops Murray and

Theodore.

EVIL VENDOR
Ohhh, this is a special room,
reserved just for VIPs like Prince
Valor. You two will have to wait
outside.

Prince Valor looks at Murray and Theodore to reassure them.

PRINCE VALOR
It’s fine boys, I’ll be OK.

Murray and Theodore walk back in front of the stand as

Prince Valor walks into the back room followed by the
vendor.

Once they’re in the room, the vendor closes the curtain

behind him.

EVIL VENDOR’S BACKROOM

Prince Valor is looking at all the products that are lining

the walls.

PRINCE VALOR
So can I buy anything back here?

EVIL VENDOR
(menacingly)
Prince Valor. You’re awfully far
away from home. Does your father
know you’re here?

PRINCE VALOR
Ummm, not exactly.

EVIL VENDOR
He doesn’t?

PRINCE VALOR
No.

EVIL VENDOR
Well what are you doing in these
parts of the kingdom?
“My Imaginary Friends” – Original Screenplay by Jason Wiese 64

PRINCE VALOR
I’m on a top secret mission.

EVIL VENDOR
Top secret? So mysterious. What’s
the mission?

PRINCE VALOR
I can’t tell you. It’s top secret.

The room fills with awkward silence for several moments

until it’s broken by the vendor.

EVIL VENDOR
Tell me. How much do you think the
king would pay for the safe return
of his son, the prince?

PRINCE VALOR
(confused)
What?

The vendor reaches behind his back and takes out a small
sword from his waistband.

EVIL VENDOR
I wonder how much you’re worth to
the King.

Prince Valor is surprised to see that the sword is the

magical Sword of Alchemy.

PRINCE VALOR
(surprised)
The sword!

EVIL VENDOR’S STAND

Murray and Theodore are standing in front of the stand

waiting for Prince Valor to come out.

THEODORE
What’s taking Prince Valor so long?

MURRAY
I don’t know. But while we’re
waiting we should at least load
up on supplies.
“My Imaginary Friends” – Original Screenplay by Jason Wiese 65

Murray grabs a few empty bags from the counter. He keeps

two and gives one to Theodore.

MURRAY
Let’s grab some stuff. We’ll pay
when they come out of the backroom.

Murray and Theodore start packing their bags with items

from the stand.

THEODORE
They’re still in there. I’m getting
worried, do you think we should
check it out?

MURRAY
It’s probably a good idea.

Murray and Theodore put down their bags. Then Murray looks
around the stand to see if there is any common item that
they could use as a weapon.

He points to a small wooden bench sitting next to the

stand.

MURRAY
Here, break a leg off of that bench.

Theodore walks over to the bench, flips it over and breaks

a leg off of it.

EVIL VENDOR’S BACKROOM

The evil vendor is blocking the exit as he holds his sword.

PRINCE VALOR
Where did you get that sword?

The vendor looks down at his sword.

EVIL VENDOR
Ohh, this little thing? It was a
present from my mom.

PRINCE VALOR
No it isn’t, it’s the Sword of
Alchemy.
“My Imaginary Friends” – Original Screenplay by Jason Wiese 66

EVIL VENDOR
So what if it is?

PRINCE VALOR
It doesn’t belong to you.

EVIL VENDOR
You don’t either, but that’s not
going to stop me from taking you.

The evil vendor slowly walks towards Prince Valor with his
sword held high.

PRINCE VALOR
What?

Prince Valor backs up until he’s in the corner of the room.

Once in the corner he sits down on the ground.

EVIL VENDOR
I wonder what the King would do
if I mailed him a finger or an
ear of his beloved son. Would he
pay whatever ransom I ask of him?
(pauses)
I think he would.

Prince Valor looks more scared as the vendor gets closer to

him.

Just as the evil vendor hovers right over him and grabs the
prince’s ear, Murray and Theodore come running into the
room.

Murray immediately attacks the evil vendor, biting his leg,

as Theodore hits him behind the other knee with the wooden
piece from the bench.

After Theodore hits him, he runs over to help the prince.

The vendor screams out in pain and drops the sword. He

tries to shake Murray off of him but to no avail, he has a
firm grip on his leg.

EVIL VENDOR
Get off me you stupid dog!

The vendor tries to swat the dog away but it doesn’t faze
Murray.
“My Imaginary Friends” – Original Screenplay by Jason Wiese 67

Theodore helps Valor stand up and rushes him towards the

exit.

Once at the exit, the prince turns back to Murray.

PRINCE VALOR
Murray, grab the sword, it’s the
Sword of Alchemy!

Murray releases the vendor then grabs the sword in his

mouth. All three of them run out of the backroom.

The vendor goes down on one knee to quickly re-cooperate

from his injury. He limps out of the room and tries to
chase the three of them.

Before running off, Prince Valor and Theodore collect the

bags that they left by the stand.

CENTER OF THE MARKETPLACE

Prince Valor, Murray and Theodore run through the middle of

the busy marketplace. They’re dodging all the other
shoppers, bobbing and weaving and jumping over and crawling
under things when necessary.

Murray is still running with the sword in his mouth.

The evil vendor is chasing them but since he’s limping

around he’s far behind.

THEODORE
Is he still chasing us?

Prince Valor turns to look behind him to see where the

vendor is.

PRINCE VALOR
He’s still back there, but he’s
getting farther and farther away.
(pauses)
Keep running!

The three off them finally make it out of the marketplace

and run off into an open field.

Several seconds later, the evil vendor makes it to the edge

of the marketplace too.
“My Imaginary Friends” – Original Screenplay by Jason Wiese 68

Very exhausted, he leans up against a small shack to catch

his breath. He is breathing very heavily.

The vendor watches as Valor, Murray and Theodore run

through the open field. They’re getting further away with
each passing second.

EVIL VENDOR
You’re lucky kid. Very lucky.

EXT. – OPEN FIELD – DAY

The three are still running as fast as they can.

Prince Valor looks back behind him again and notices that
the evil vendor is not chasing them anymore, so he stops
running.

PRINCE VALOR
OK boys, we can stop. He’s gone.

With that, Murray and Theodore stop running as well. All

three are out of breath and breathing heavily.

Murray finally drops the sword from his mouth.

MURRAY
That’s a relief.

PRINCE VALOR
We got it Murray! We got the sword
of Alchemy!

MURRAY
Unbelievable, what are the chances.

PRINCE VALOR
I don’t know and I don’t care. I’m
just happy that we got it.

THEODORE
What’s so special about this sword?

PRINCE VALOR
This sword will help us defeat the
dragon. This is the only kind of
sword with the power to be able
to do that.
“My Imaginary Friends” – Original Screenplay by Jason Wiese 69

Theodore takes a closer look at the sword and picks it up.

THEODORE
So it has magical powers?

MURRAY
You could say that.

Murray looks around the open field.

MURRAY
So, where are we?

Prince Valor takes his map out and looks at it.

PRINCE VALOR
I’m not exactly sure. This area
isn’t called out on the map.

Valor takes out a compass, lifts it up in the air then

points in a direction.

PRINCE VALOR (cont’d)

But according to my compass, we
should continue heading this way,
east.

Murray puts the sword back in his mouth and he continues

walking in the open field along with Prince Valor and
Murray.

LATER ON IN THE OPEN FIELD

The three come upon a steep hill at the end of the open
field.

PRINCE VALOR
I think we’ll have to navigate
this hill since this is the
direction we’re supposed to head
in. It doesn’t look like there’s
any other way.

MURRAY
It’s awfully steep.

PRINCE VALOR
That’s OK buddy, jump on my back.
I’ll give you a ride.
“My Imaginary Friends” – Original Screenplay by Jason Wiese 70

Murray jumps on Prince Valor’s back and he and Theodore

walk up the hill.

Once they make it to the top of the hill, they look out and
are in awe to see a large savanna for as far as the eye can
see.

Murray climbs off of Valor’s back and all three of them

stand next to each other in silence.

THE GREAT SAVANNA

The grassy plains are filled with groups of lions and cubs
playfully running around, giraffes feeding from trees,
hippos staying cool in a shallow lake, zebras walking
around in their herds and monkeys swinging from tree to
tree.

THEODORE
(in awe)
Whoa. What is this place?

Prince Valor takes out his map and looks at it again.

PRINCE VALOR
Well, according to my map this is
the Great Savanna.

THEODORE
(in awe)
It’s amazing.

PRINCE VALOR
Look at all the animals. There’s
giraffes…

THEODORE
Ohhh, there’s some zebras over
there…

PRINCE VALOR
…Those hippos have the right idea,
cooling themselves down in the lake.

THEODORE
…The little lion cubs are cute.
“My Imaginary Friends” – Original Screenplay by Jason Wiese 71

PRINCE VALOR
…And look at those monkeys swinging
from the trees.

THEODORE
They’re all looking like they’re
having so much fun. I want to
play with them.

Theodore runs down the hill.

PRINCE VALOR
Wait Theodore, hold up!

Theodore doesn’t listen and continues running, he’s

followed by Prince Valor and Murray.

PRINCE VALOR
Theodore!

Once Theodore gets into the grassy plains he starts

playfully running with a group of zebras. He’s laughing as
he tries to keep up with them.

THEODORE
Weeee! Weeee!

Prince Valor and Murray try their best to keep up with

Theodore but he’s a faster runner.

PRINCE VALOR
OK, OK, zebras are fine. Just
stay away from the cubs. They
may be cute but their parents
certainly are not.

The zebras speed up and run off, leaving Theodore behind.

He stands there and watches them run off.

THEODORE
(disappointedly)
Awww, come back friends!

With Theodore standing still, this allows Valor and Murray

to catch up to him.

They are both hunched over, simultaneously out of breath

but still breathing heavily.
“My Imaginary Friends” – Original Screenplay by Jason Wiese 72

THEODORE
Are you OK?

MURRAY
(coughing)
Theodore, what are you doing?

THEODORE
What?

MURRAY
You could’ve gotten hurt.

THEODORE
I was just trying to have some
fun.

PRINCE VALOR
Theodore, try to keep in mind our
goal. We’re out here to find the
dragon, to find the princess. We
can’t be wasting time running
around with zebras.

Theodore is embarrassed that Prince Valor scolds him so he

looks down at the ground when he answers.

THEODORE
(ashamed)
You’re right, I’m sorry.

PRINCE VALOR
That’s OK, Theodore. Just try to
stay with us from now on.

THEODORE
You got it Prince Valor.

PRINCE VALOR
OK, let’s carry on.

The three of them walk through the grassy plains – past a

bunch of gazelles grazing, koala bears sitting in a tree,
cubs running around, wildebeests roaming about and vultures
flying overhead.

Prince Valor looks up to the see vultures flying over them.

“My Imaginary Friends” – Original Screenplay by Jason Wiese 73

PRINCE VALOR
(scared)
There are vultures circling above
us. It’s a little scary. Don’t
they hang out around dead animals?

MURRAY
Have confidence and act like you
belong here then you’ll be fine.

PRINCE VALOR
I just hope we don’t become one
of those dead animals.

MURRAY
Prince, we’ll be fine.

THEODORE
I’m thirsty.

PRINCE VALOR
Well maybe you shouldn’t have been
running around so much then you
wouldn’t be so thirsty.

MURRAY
Prince Valor, I could use some
water too.

Prince Valor looks around the grassy plains.

PRINCE VALOR
OK, well it looks like there’s a
lake up ahead. Let’s head over
there.

The three of them head to the lake up ahead.

LAKE IN THE SAVANNA

They walk to the edge of the lake, get down on their knees
and start drinking water by grabbing handfuls of it and
putting it to their mouths.

Suddenly, a small, young ELEPHANT walks up besides them, he

puts his trunk in the lake and starts drinking as well.

After a while, Prince Valor notices that an elephant is

hanging out right next to them.
“My Imaginary Friends” – Original Screenplay by Jason Wiese 74

PRINCE VALOR
Hey little guy, what’s your name?

The young elephant is startled by Prince Valor and runs a

few yards away.

PRINCE VALOR
Hey friend, I didn’t mean to startle
you.

The elephant walks back to his spot as soon as he settles

down.

PRINCE VALOR
So what’s your name?

MR. ELEPHANT
(proudly)
I’m Mr. Elephant!

PRINCE VALOR
(perplexed)
Mr. Elephant?

MR. ELEPHANT
That’s right.

PRINCE VALOR
That’s funny.

MR. ELEPHANT
How so?

PRINCE VALOR
Such a formal name for such a young
mammal.

MR. ELEPHANT
I’ve always been really small in
life so my mom thought that by
naming me Mr. Elephant I could
gain the respect that I couldn’t
get through my size.

PRINCE VALOR
That’s nice.
“My Imaginary Friends” – Original Screenplay by Jason Wiese 75

MR. ELEPHANT
Yeah, my friends used to kid me
and call me a dwarf but my mom
always made me feel better by
saying that my unique size made
me God’s special gift to her.

PRINCE VALOR
That’s so sweet, I know exactly
how you feel Mr. Elephant. I
get picked on by the kids at
school because of my size too.

THEODORE
(surprised)
You get picked on too Prince
Valor?

PRINCE VALOR
You sound surprised?

THEODORE
I just wouldn’t expect that a
prince such as yourself would
be picked on by other kids.

PRINCE VALOR
It doesn’t matter who you are
though, kids will pick on anyone
they think is different from
them.

MR. ELEPHANT
Isn’t that the truth.

PRINCE VALOR
So Mr. Elephant, where is your
mom now? It’s quite unusual to
see an elephant, such as yourself,
away from the herd.

MR. ELEPHANT
My mom is dead.

PRINCE VALOR
(shocked)
She’s dead? But you’re so young?!?
“My Imaginary Friends” – Original Screenplay by Jason Wiese 76

MR. ELEPHANT
It was a couple years ago.
Poachers were looking for ivory
to trade. They took her tusks,
she didn’t survive.

Mr. Elephant starts tearing up over the memory of his

mother.

PRINCE VALOR
Sorry about your mom. How about
the rest of your family? Like
your dad?

MR. ELEPHANT
I never knew my dad, but I’ve heard
the stories about him though
through the different herds.
Apparently he was quite the cow’s
bull.

PRINCE VALOR
Any siblings? Brothers? Sisters?

MR. ELEPHANT
Yes, I have fourteen of them, but
I haven’t seen them in over a year.

PRINCE VALOR
Why not?

MR. ELEPHANT
My herd lives on the other side
of the plains and we had a bad
drought about a year and a half
ago. I left the herd in search
of food and water. I asked my
brothers and sisters to come with
me but they didn’t want to leave
their home. I went anyways.

PRINCE VALOR
By yourself?

MR. ELEPHANT
Yes.

PRINCE VALOR
But you’re so young.
“My Imaginary Friends” – Original Screenplay by Jason Wiese 77

MR. ELEPHANT
I was forced to grow up fast though.
The Savanna will do that to a mammal.
(pauses)
I don’t know if my siblings survived
the drought.
(pauses)
Ever since I left them I’ve been a
loner, just trying to survive.

PRINCE VALOR
Do you want to come with us?

MR. ELEPHANT
Where are you going?

THEODORE
We’re going to fight a dragon!

MR. ELEPHANT
Fight a dragon, huh?

THEODORE
And save a princess!

MR. ELEPHANT
(skeptically)
Ohhh and save a princess.

PRINCE VALOR
It’s true, we’re on a mission to
save Princess Adorable from the
evil dragon of Gloomy Glen. We
could use your help.

Mr. Elephant takes a few moments to think about the offer.

MR. ELEPHANT
You all seem like good folks and
I’d like to help but I don’t want
to leave here. My home is the
Savanna. I’m sorry.

PRINCE VALOR
Are you sure? We could use a
fourth. You’d be very valuable
to us.
“My Imaginary Friends” – Original Screenplay by Jason Wiese 78

MR. ELEPHANT
I’m sorry, I can’t.

Mr. Elephant starts walking away, then he turns back around

to them after a few steps.

MR. ELEPHANT
Good luck though.

PRINCE VALOR
(dejectedly)
Thanks, you too.

Mr. Elephant continues to walk away. Even though it was

his decision to not go he still has a look of
disappointment in his eyes.

PRINCE VALOR
(disappointedly)
Come on boys, let’s move on.

Prince Valor, Murray and Theodore gather their things then

walk away from the lake, in the other direction from Mr.
Elephant.

IN THE MIDDLE OF THE SAVANNA

Mr. Elephant is moping around across the plains, his head

is looking down at the ground as he walks.

Suddenly, Mr. Elephant hears and feels the ground rumbling.

He looks up and his eyes grow incredibly wide upon seeing
what’s in front of him.

MR. ELEPHANT
(yells)
Stampede!

Herds of elephants as far as the eye can see are stampeding

towards Mr. Elephant. The ground is shaking violently.

Mr. Elephant turns around and runs towards Valor, Murray

and Theodore.

He finally catches up to them.

MR. ELEPHANT
(panicked)
Stampede!
“My Imaginary Friends” – Original Screenplay by Jason Wiese 79

Prince Valor turns around to where Mr. Elephant came from

and sees the elephants coming on the horizon.

PRINCE VALOR
He’s right.

THEODORE
(worriedly)
Oh no! What are we going to do!

MR. ELEPHANT
Get on!

MURRAY
(confused)
What?

MR. ELEPHANT
Get on, I’ll save you!

Mr. Elephant gets down on one knee to let Prince Valor,

Murray and Theodore climb on his back.

As soon as they get on his back, the stampede converges on

Mr. Elephant.

MR. ELEPHANT
Hang on!

Mr. Elephant starts running in the middle of the stampede

across the plains.

He’s very careful to not bump into any of the other

elephants while also maintaining the pace of the stampede.

Prince Valor, Murray and Theodore are flailing about on top

of Mr. Elephant as they struggle to stay on him.

After awhile in the stampede, Mr. Elephant sees an opening

off to the side and is finally able to escape.

He runs out of the stampede and stops only when he’s safely
away from the other elephants.

Mr. Elephant lets Valor, Murray and Theodore off. He’s

completely exhausted and out of breath.
“My Imaginary Friends” – Original Screenplay by Jason Wiese 80

PRINCE VALOR
You did it Mr. Elephant! You saved
us!

Murray barks in appreciation.

MR. ELEPHANT
Like I said, you all seem like
good folks. I couldn’t watch you
get trampled.

PRINCE VALOR
See, you care about us, don’t you?
Now that you realize this, do you
think you’d reconsider joining
us?

Mr. Elephant thinks for a few moments before answering.

MR. ELEPHANT
OK, I’ll come along with you all
on your adventure.

THEODORE
Yippie!

Theodore gives Mr. Elephant a very awkward high and low

five, which they have to do a few times before they
actually get it right.

PRINCE VALOR
Good.
(pauses)
Let’s keep moving. It’s getting
late and it’ll be dark soon.

MURRAY
Yeah, we should get out of the
Savanna before he have to set up
camp tonight.

PRINCE VALOR
True, I have no intentions of
being some animal’s midnight meal.

THEODORE
Neither do I.
“My Imaginary Friends” – Original Screenplay by Jason Wiese 81

PRINCE VALOR
OK, everyone lend a helping hand
and grab something.

Prince Valor, Murray and Theodore all grab a bag while Mr.
Elephant struggles to pick up a bag sitting on the ground
next to him.

The other three watch as Mr. Elephant struggles to pick up

the bag.

MR. ELEPHANT
(embarrassed)
Sorry, I don’t have any opposable
thumbs.

PRINCE VALOR
(laughs)
Here, I’ll help you Mr. Elephant.

Prince Valor picks up the bag and puts it around Mr.

Elephant’s trunk.

All four of them continue walking through the plains.

EXT. – OPEN FIELD - NIGHT

Prince Valor, Murray and Theodore are sitting around a

campfire roasting marshmallows. Mr. Elephant is standing
on his four legs right by them.

The sounds of various animals in the distance echo

throughout the night.

THEODORE
How much further do we have?

Prince Valor takes out his map and looks at it.

PRINCE VALOR
According to my map, we’re not that
far away. Probably only a half a
day left.

THEODORE
That’s good.
“My Imaginary Friends” – Original Screenplay by Jason Wiese 82

PRINCE VALOR
I wonder what Princess Adorable will
think when she sees us show up to
rescue her.

MURRAY
What do you mean?

PRINCE VALOR
I’m just saying, she’s always known
me as the awkward, shy prince.
She’d never think in a million
years that I’d have the courage to
do this. I still can’t believe
that I have the courage to do this.
I hope I don’t chicken out.

MURRAY
You won’t Prince Valor. I have
faith.

PRINCE VALOR
But what if I do?

MURRAY
You won’t.

PRINCE VALOR
But what if I do?

MURRAY
(agitated)
Prince Valor, you have to start
believing in yourself. Sometimes
you can be so ridiculous. I mean
you’re smart, funny, witty and
caring but no one would ever know
these great qualities about you
if they only heard you talk. Get
some confidence. You obviously
have a lot going for you, if you
didn’t you wouldn’t be my best
friend.

MR. ELEPHANT
What’s up with all the self-doubt?
You’re a prince. You should be
strong and brimming with confidence.
“My Imaginary Friends” – Original Screenplay by Jason Wiese 83

PRINCE VALOR
I know. But look at me, I’m short,
I have ridiculously big glasses
because I wouldn’t be able to
see otherwise and I just think
I look goofy in general.

MURRAY
No you don’t.

THEODORE
It’s not what’s on the outside
that counts, it’s what’s on the
inside. And granted, I don’t
know you that well, and I just
met you in fact, but I can tell
that you have an unbelievable
heart.

PRINCE VALOR
Thanks Theodore.

THEODORE
And I mean that sincerely.

All four of them sit silently around the fire, watching it

as it slowly dies out.

Prince Valor speaks up just as it’s about to die.

PRINCE VALOR
Time for bed.

Mr. Elephant walks over to the fire and kicks dirt on it to

completely extinguish it.

EXT. – OPEN FIELD – SUNRISE

The sun is rising behind the camp as Valor, Murray,

Theodore and Mr. Elephant are still sleeping.

A bunch of red ants are crawling all over the four of them.

Suddenly, Prince Valor starts scratching himself in his

sleep and eventually wakes up.

He looks at his arms and sees bites and red ants all over
them, then he looks at his legs and sees red ants all over
them as well.
“My Imaginary Friends” – Original Screenplay by Jason Wiese 84

Prince Valor screams out, waking up everyone else in the

process.

Prince Valor points to Murray to let him know that he has

red ants on him, Murray points to Theodore and Theodore
points to Mr. Elephant. All four of them start screaming
together.

THEODORE
What are they?!?

MURRAY
Red ants.

THEODORE
Get off me, get off me!

All four of them start swatting the red ants off of

themselves.

Then they stand up and run and jump around to get the ants
off.

Theodore runs to a stream nearby with a bucket, fills it

with water, comes back and throws it on Prince Valor.
Valor gets completely drenched in the process.

PRINCE VALOR
Theodore!

THEODORE
(innocently)
What? I wanted to help you get
the ants off.

PRINCE VALOR
I’m all wet now! Thanks a lot!

THEODORE
Sorry.

PRINCE VALOR
Let’s pack up and get moving.

All four of them start packing up their things.

“My Imaginary Friends” – Original Screenplay by Jason Wiese 85

EXT. – JUNGLE – DAY

Prince Valor, Murray, Theodore and Mr. Elephant are walking

through a jungle-like forest with dense trees and high
grass.

They emerge out of the jungle and into the barren world of
the dragon’s castle.

EXT. – DRAGON’S CASTLE – DARK

Periodic lightning fills the sky which has a reddish glow

to it.

The ground is just dirt and stone, there is no grass or

trees.

The dark, foreboding castle is about 1,000 yards away from

them as they come out of the jungle.

A menacing-looking volcano rises on the horizon behind the

castle.

All four of them stay very close to each other since

they’re scared of their surroundings.

THEODORE
This place is s-s-scary.

MR. ELEPHANT
Yeah, it looks like the sky is
breathing fire.

PRINCE VALOR
If anyone wants to turn back, now’s
your chance.

There’s silence for a few moments as Prince Valor waits for

a response from any of the others.

THEODORE
No, I’m good. I’m here for you
Prince Valor.

MR. ELEPHANT
Yeah, me too.

PRINCE VALOR
Good.
“My Imaginary Friends” – Original Screenplay by Jason Wiese 86

Prince Valor reaches into his knapsack and takes out his
sword.

PRINCE VALOR
OK, let’s go…slowly. Stay close
to me.

Prince Valor starts walking very cautiously, followed

closely by Murray, Theodore and Mr. Elephant.

As they approach the dark, scary-looking castle, vultures

start flying high above them.

After much trepidation, the four finally make it to the

moat that surrounds the castle.

Theodore looks down in it and sees lava flowing through the

moat, instead of water.

THEODORE
Why does the water glow orange?
And why is it hot?

MURRAY
It’s not water. It’s lava.

THEODORE
(in awe)
Lava?

MURRAY
Yeah, you know lava, like what
comes out of a volcano.

THEODORE
(still in awe)
Ohhh, lava.

Theodore leans his head over to get closer to the lava.

Then suddenly, some lava shoots up in the air from the moat
and gets dangerously close to him.

This startles Theodore and he instinctively runs backwards

a few feet.

THEODORE
Wow, that is hot!
“My Imaginary Friends” – Original Screenplay by Jason Wiese 87

PRINCE VALOR
Come on, let’s stop playing around.

The four of them, led by Prince Valor, walk over to a

rickety, fairly unstable bridge with several wooden planks
missing.

The bridge shakes when the wind blows and fireballs

randomly shoot up from the moat below, hitting the bridge.

MR. ELEPHANT
(in disbelief)
We have to cross this?

Prince Valor looks around for an alternative path but

doesn’t see one.

PRINCE VALOR
Looks like we have to.

THEODORE
(scared)
Oh dear.

PRINCE VALOR
Murray.

MURRAY
I know, I know. I’ll go first,
I know my lot in life.

PRINCE VALOR
(laughs)
Thanks pal.

Murray goes on the bridge and carefully tries to cross it,

one plank at a time.

He avoids the fireballs that shoot up from the moat and

jumps up and down on a couple of planks to check out their
sturdiness.

When the planks don’t crack, he turns back to Prince Valor

and gives the thumbs up signal.

After a while, Murray finally makes it to the other side,

right in front of the castle.
“My Imaginary Friends” – Original Screenplay by Jason Wiese 88

PRINCE VALOR
Theodore, you’re up next.

THEODORE
I don’t know if I can do this.

PRINCE VALOR
Come on, it looks fine.

THEODORE
I’m heavier than Murray though.

Prince Valor bends over in front of Theodore.

PRINCE VALOR
OK, climb on.

THEODORE
What?

PRINCE VALOR
I’ll carry you over.

THEODORE
But that’ll just make us heavier.

PRINCE VALOR
We’ll be OK, come on, get on.

Theodore climbs onto Prince Valor’s back and once he’s on

him Valor walks onto the bridge.

Like Murray, Prince Valor takes his time to cautiously

cross the bridge.

Fireballs shoot up in the air close to them, scaring

Theodore.

THEODORE
Ohh boy, that was close.

When Prince Valor steps on a loose plank, it cracks and he

almost loses his balance.

They’re about to fall but the prince is able to grab a hold

of the rope that acts as the railing.

PRINCE VALOR
Hold on Theodore!
“My Imaginary Friends” – Original Screenplay by Jason Wiese 89

THEODORE
Ohhh no, this is it.

PRINCE VALOR
No it’s not. Just hold on tight.

Prince Valor regains his balance and continues to cross the

bridge.

He finally manages to make it to the other side of the

moat.

Theodore gets off of Prince Valor’s back. Prince Valor

stands next to Murray as they both look back at Mr.
Elephant on the other side of the moat.

PRINCE VALOR
Looks like we have a problem.

MURRAY
Yeah, about a 2,000 pound problem.

PRINCE VALOR
How are we going to get Mr. Elephant
over here?

MURRAY
Good question.

PRINCE VALOR
Well let’s think. Everyone think!

Prince Valor, Murray and Theodore all stand there quietly

as they try to think of a solution.

PRINCE VALOR
Mr. Elephant you’re a deceptively
speedy runner right?

MR. ELEPHANT
Yes, I can run fast.

PRINCE VALOR
See if you can build up enough steam
to jump over the moat.

MR. ELEPHANT
(skeptically)
Ohhkay.
“My Imaginary Friends” – Original Screenplay by Jason Wiese 90

PRINCE VALOR
Come on, I bet you can do it.

MR. ELEPHANT
I’ll try.

Mr. Elephant backs up about 20 yards and starts running

full steam towards the moat.

He stops abruptly only inches in front of the moat when he

realizes that he won’t be able to jump over it.

MR. ELEPHANT
I’m sorry Prince Valor, I can’t do
it.

Prince Valor, Murray and Theodore look deflated. After a

few moments of silence, Valor stares at Mr. Elephant’s
floppy ears.

PRINCE VALOR
Hey, I have an idea.
(points to Mr. Elephant’s
ears)
Have you ever tried to fly with
those things?

MR. ELEPHANT
What, my ears? No.

PRINCE VALOR
They look like wings. I bet you
can use them like wings too.

MR. ELEPHANT
(skeptically)
I don’t know about that.

PRINCE VALOR
Try it. Build some steam and flap
your ears while you’re running.

MR. ELEPHANT
Ohhhkay.

Mr. Elephant backs up 20 yards again and starts running

full steam towards the moat. This time he’s flapping his
ears as he’s running.
“My Imaginary Friends” – Original Screenplay by Jason Wiese 91

As he gets to the edge of the moat, he jumps up and

actually starts flying over it.

MR. ELEPHANT
It’s working, it’s working!
I’m flying! I’m flying!

PRINCE VALOR
Ha! I knew you could do it!

Mr. Elephant lands on the other side of the moat right by

Prince Valor.

PRINCE VALOR
There you go buddy!

Prince Valor pats him on the head for a job well done.

MR. ELEPHANT
I never knew I had that in me.

Now that all four are over the moat, they turn and look
straight up at the dragon’s castle. The outside of the
castle is covered with scary-looking gargoyles.

THEODORE
Whoa, scary.

PRINCE VALOR
It is. Let’s go though.

All four of them approach the castle.

INT. – DRAGON’S CASTLE

GRAND FOYER

The large front door is pushed open by Prince Valor. The

four of them cautiously enter the large foyer.

It’s almost completely dark inside, with the only light

coming from the torches hanging up along the corridor.

THEODORE
(yells)
Hello! Anyone home?

Prince Valor quickly moves to cover Theodore’s mouth.

“My Imaginary Friends” – Original Screenplay by Jason Wiese 92

PRINCE VALOR
(whispers)
Shhhh! What are you doing Theodore?
Stay quiet or else we might lose
the element of surprise.

THEODORE
(whispers)
Sorry Prince.

The four of them continue walking through the foyer.

PRINCE VALOR
Where do you think the dungeon is?

MURRAY
Downstairs.

PRINCE VALOR
Ahhh, right. That makes sense.

They continue walking until they see a flight of steps

leading downstairs.

PRINCE VALOR
Here, here are steps.

Theodore takes a peek down the stairs.

THEODORE
It’s awfully dark down there.

Prince Valor grabs a torch from the wall to light the way
as they walk down the stairs.

DUNGEON

From the stairs, they enter a huge dungeon that has a river
of lava flowing right through it from the moat.

The ceiling of the dungeon is very high, about 40 feet

high.

MURRAY
Well this certainly looks like a
dungeon.

Prince Valor looks around to survey the room.

“My Imaginary Friends” – Original Screenplay by Jason Wiese 93

PRINCE VALOR
Where do you think the princess
is?

Murray looks around as well.

MURRAY
I don’t know.

Prince Valor finally spots a small cell built into the

rocky wall on the other side of the room and points to it.

PRINCE VALOR
There! Over there! She’s over
there!

Prince Valor rushes across the room. He walks over to an

area where the river of lava is pretty narrow, so that
everybody, even Mr. Elephant, can jump over it.

He approaches the cell.

In the cell sits PRINCESS ADORABLE, who looks remarkably

like Beatrice.

She is sitting in a shadow towards the back of the cell,

looking out of a very tiny window. Her back is to Prince
Valor.

Prince Valor looks at her for a second before speaking up.

PRINCE VALOR
Princess Adorable.

Princess Adorable turns to look over at the cell’s

entrance. She’s shocked to see that Prince Valor is
standing there, she can’t believe it actually.

PRINCESS ADORABLE
(shocked)
Prince Valor?

PRINCE VALOR
That’s me…in the flesh.

Princess Adorable stands up and approaches the cell door.

“My Imaginary Friends” – Original Screenplay by Jason Wiese 94

PRINCESS ADORABLE
What are you doing here? How did
you find me?

PRINCE VALOR
Murray saw you being kidnapped by
the dragon, so we mounted a rescue
effort.

PRINCESS ADORABLE
You did?

PRINCE VALOR
Yes.

PRINCESS ADORABLE
But we’re so far away, how did
you manage to get here.

PRINCE VALOR
It wasn’t easy, but I had some help
from my friends.
(pauses)
Are you OK?

PRINCESS ADORABLE
Yes I’m fine.

PRINCE VALOR
Has the dragon hurt you at all?

PRINCESS ADORABLE
No, not yet.

Princess Adorable looks around behind Valor and only sees

Murray, Theodore and Mr. Elephant.

PRINCESS ADORABLE
So where is this rescue effort?

PRINCE VALOR
You’re looking at it.

PRINCESS ADORABLE
Really?

Prince Valor looks behind him at his newfound friends.

“My Imaginary Friends” – Original Screenplay by Jason Wiese 95

PRINCE VALOR
Yes. You know Murray. And this
is Theodore and Mr. Elephant.

Theodore bows to the princess and Mr. Elephant gives her a

curtsey.

MR. ELEPHANT
How do you do princess.

PRINCESS ADORABLE
Well, nice to meet you all.
(pauses)
Prince Valor, you should get out
of here, the dragon will back any
moment. He just went out to find
some food.

PRINCE VALOR
We’re not leaving here without you.

PRINCESS ADORABLE
Prince Valor, that’s sweet and all,
but you’ll be no match for the
dragon.

PRINCE VALOR
Maybe so, but we came here to rescue
you and rescue you we will…somehow.

Suddenly there is a roar in the distance. Everyone’s

startled.

PRINCESS ADORABLE
That’s the dragon.

PRINCE VALOR
Then we don’t have a lot of time.

PRINCESS ADORABLE
Prince, save yourself, leave.

PRINCE VALOR
No way, not without you.

Prince Valor looks back at Mr. Elephant.

“My Imaginary Friends” – Original Screenplay by Jason Wiese 96

PRINCE VALOR
Mr. Elephant, you’re up. We need
you to ram the door to get it
opened.

Mr. Elephant situates himself a few feet in front of the

cell door. In preparation, he digs his hind legs into the
dirt floor.

Then suddenly he runs into the cell door, ramming it at

full speed.

The door is damaged but it doesn’t open.

PRINCE VALOR
Again.

Mr. Elephant backs up and rams the door again. He creates

more damage to the door but it still doesn’t open.

As he backs up again, the DRAGON appears by the stairs in

the dungeon on the other side of the room.

In one quick move, the tall dragon jumps up, flies over to
the cell and lands right by Prince Valor, Murray, Theodore
and Mr. Elephant.

As the dragon lands, he shakes the ground with his massive

weight and everyone, including the princess, loses their
balance and falls to the ground.

The dragon lets out another big roar, then he breathes fire
in the direction of Prince Valor.

The prince rolls over on the ground to avoid the fire.

The dragon walks back and forth in front of the river of

lava, he’s blocking their escape.

As the four try to re-group, the dragon periodically

breathes fire towards them.

THEODORE
What are we going to do?

PRINCE VALOR
I don’t know, I guess we should’ve
devised a plan before we got here.
“My Imaginary Friends” – Original Screenplay by Jason Wiese 97

MURRAY
Prince Valor, you have the sword.

PRINCE VALOR
I know, but I can’t get close to
him.

MURRAY
We’ll create a distraction so that
you can get close to him.

PRINCE VALOR
OK. What kind of distraction are
you going to create?

MURRAY
We’ll all do what we do best.

Murray runs straight for the dragon, dodges fire in the

process, and attacks him by biting his leg. Since the
dragon is so big, this is only a minor distraction.

Then Mr. Elephant runs towards the dragon and rams him in
the other leg. He falls down, stands up and rams him
again.

Theodore walks over to a corner of the room, picks up a few

rocks and starts throwing them at the dragon, occasionally
hitting him in the stomach and chest. The rocks aren’t
nearly big enough to cause any damage though.

As Murray, Mr. Elephant and Theodore have the dragon

distracted, Prince Valor runs towards him with the sword.

When Prince Valor finally gets close, the dragon kicks him
and he goes flying across the room.

Prince Valor gets up and tries again while avoiding the

fire being shot at him.

This time the dragon leans over and swats him across the
room.

PRINCE VALOR
This isn’t working. Time for a
new tactic.
“My Imaginary Friends” – Original Screenplay by Jason Wiese 98

Prince Valor runs towards the dragon again, but this time
he stops halfway there. As soon as he stops, he throws the
sword at the dragon.

The dragon jumps up and stays in the air by flying, the

sword misses him and lands on the other side of the room.

PRINCE VALOR
Ohhh no.

The dragon lands back on the ground, kicks Murray with one
foot and kicks Mr. Elephant with the other foot. Both of
them go flying across the river.

The dragon blocks a rock being thrown by Theodore and the

rock ricochets and hits him, he falls to the ground.

Prince Valor sees the sword on the other side of the room,
across the river of lava, and tries to run for it.

The dragon blocks him from getting there and kicks him into
a wall.

After a few seconds, Prince Valor stands up, screams and

runs over to the dragon. He’s not even sure what he’s
going to do.

The dragon trips Prince Valor and he falls on his face,

reminiscent of Bernie being tripped in school by the bully.

PRINCE VALOR
(yells)
I’m tired of you bullying me!

With Prince Valor, Murray, Theodore and Mr. Elephant all

laying on the ground hurt, the dragon approaches the cell.

He leans down in front of the cell door and looks directly

at Princess Adorable. She is scared and tears are falling
down her cheeks.

The dragon rubs the princess’s face with one of his hands
and breathes heavily on her, with no fire.

Prince Valor stands up and rushes over to Murray, Theodore

and Mr. Elephant to re-group.

PRINCE VALOR
Theodore, how’s your aim?
“My Imaginary Friends” – Original Screenplay by Jason Wiese 99

THEODORE
I’m pretty good.

PRINCE VALOR
OK, I want you to take some rocks
and aim for the wings.

THEODORE
I can do that.

Theodore runs off to another corner of the room where there

are more rocks.

Seeing that they’ve re-grouped, the dragon turns his

attention back to them. He turns around and tries to hit
them with fire, but they manage to avoid it.

Since the dragon went over to the cell, this creates an

opening and allows Prince Valor, Murray and Mr. Elephant to
head to the other side of the room, crossing the river of
lava again in the process.

Prince Valor rushes over to the sword and picks it up. The
dragon notices this and flies over to them.

Valor chucks the sword at him but the dragon evades it by

jumping up and flapping his wings to stay in the air above
the river.

The sword goes beneath the dragon and lands in the river of
lava.

PRINCE VALOR
(yells)
Now Theodore, aim for the wings!

Theodore picks up several rocks and starts throwing them at

the dragon.

One rock goes through one of the dragon’s wings then

another rock goes through the other wing.

His wings are heavily damaged and he flaps them desperately

to try to stay in the air.

It doesn’t work though and he falls down, directly into the

river. As he hits the river he lets out one final roar
then he begins to sink slowly until he’s fully submerged in
the lava.
“My Imaginary Friends” – Original Screenplay by Jason Wiese 100

PRINCE VALOR
We did it! We did it!

All four of them converge and give each other awkward high
and low fives.

PRINCE VALOR
Theodore, nice shot! You did it!

THEODORE
You did it, Prince Valor, you did
it.

PRINCE VALOR
We all did it.

MURRAY
Good teamwork everybody.

PRINCE VALOR
Come on let’s set the princess
free.

They all rush back over to the cell, Mr. Elephant rams the
door again. The door doesn’t open so he does it one more
time.

PRINCE VALOR
Come on Mr. Elephant, you can do
it!

Finally on the second attempt, the door opens.

Princess Adorable rushes out and gives Prince Valor a big

hug.

PRINCESS ADORABLE
My hero!

MURRAY
And all it took was some confidence.

Mr. Elephant is sitting on the ground rubbing his head. It

clearly hurts after he’s used it as a battering ram so many
times.

MR. ELEPHANT
Owww, my head.
“My Imaginary Friends” – Original Screenplay by Jason Wiese 101

Princess Adorable walks over to Mr. Elephant and gives him

a sweet kiss on the top of his head.

PRINCESS ADORABLE
Thank you Mr. Elephant.

PRINCE VALOR
Yeah, thanks buddy!

Upon the dragon’s death, the river of lava turns into

crystal clear water, the dirt floor turns into marble and
the walls turn from rock to beautiful bricks with portraits
of old royal family members hanging up.

THEODORE
Check out the river…and the floor…
and the walls.

PRINCESS ADORABLE
It’s beautiful.

PRINCE VALOR
That it is.

All five of them take a moment to appreciate how the

dungeon has changed for the better.

MURRAY
Can we go home now?

PRINCE VALOR
You don’t have to ask me twice.

Prince Valor grabs Princess Adorable’s hand and they rush

up the stairs, followed closely by Murray, Theodore and Mr.
Elephant.

EXT. – DRAGON’S CASTLE – DAY

As soon as they walk out of the castle, they’re amazed to

see how the area around it has turned from a dark,
depressing, bleak place to a bright, vibrant land filled
with lush trees, plants, flowers and grass everywhere.

The outside of the castle is sparkling clean, the windows

are shiny and the gargoyles have been replaced with spires.
“My Imaginary Friends” – Original Screenplay by Jason Wiese 102

The sun is shining without a cloud in the sky. The rickety

old bridge with planks missing is now a sturdy, steel
bridge.

Beneath the bridge, the river of lava has been replaced by

crystal clear water.

The five of them run across the bridge. Theodore stops

halfway across the bridge and looks down into the moat. He
can see his reflection in the water.

THEODORE
Wow, look at this, I can see my
reflection in the water.

Theodore looks at himself in the water, then he hides his

face from the water, then he looks at his reflection again.
He’s laughing during all of this as he’s clearly enjoying
himself.

Prince Valor walks back to Theodore and grabs him.

PRINCE VALOR
Come on Theodore, there will be
enough time to play later.

OPEN FIELD

All five of them look around to get a full view of the

land. They see that the volcano behind the castle has now
turned into a lush, colorful, snow-capped mountain.

A rainbow develops over the castle.

Princess Adorable notices a colorful strawberry field not

too far away.

PRINCESS ADORABLE
Look, strawberries! It’s beautiful
over there. Let’s go check it out!

Princess Adorable grabs Prince Valor’s hand and runs off

towards the strawberry field. They are followed closely by
Murray, Theodore and Mr. Elephant.

STRAWBERRY FIELD

In celebration, the prince and princess dance in the middle

of the strawberry field as they’re surrounded by Murray,
“My Imaginary Friends” – Original Screenplay by Jason Wiese 103

Theodore and Mr. Elephant who are all dancing with

themselves.

PRINCESS ADORABLE
Thank you Prince Valor for saving
me, you’re so brave and courageous!

PRINCE VALOR
No problem, I just did what I felt
I had to do.

Murray walks up to Prince Valor while he dances. Valor

bends over slightly to hear him.

MURRAY
(whispers)
See what you’re capable of when you
just believe in yourself? You can
do anything you want.

PRINCE VALOR
(whispers)
Thanks for believing in me.

MURRAY
(whispers)
It wasn’t me, it was you. Confidence
is a wonderful thing, isn’t it?

PRINCE VALOR
It sure is.

Murray walks away as Prince Valor continues to dance with

Princess Adorable.

A bunch of doves fly overhead.

INT. – BERNIE’S HOUSE

BERNIE’S BEDROOM

Bernie wakes up from his dream on Saturday morning, the sun

is shining brightly through his window.

After rubbing his eyes and stretching his arms, he stands

up, grabs his glasses from his nightstand and starts to get
dressed.
“My Imaginary Friends” – Original Screenplay by Jason Wiese 104

EXT. – RESIDENTIAL STREET OUTSIDE BERNIE’S HOUSE – MORNING

Bernie walks out the front door of his house and marches
confidently down the sidewalk of his street to Beatrice’s
home, which is about five houses down.

BEATRICE’S HOUSE

He approaches the front door, runs his fingers through his

hair to fix it then rings the doorbell.

After a few moments, BEATRICE’S MOM, a gentle woman in her

late thirties, answers the door. She’s surprised to see
him so early in the morning.

BEATRICE’S MOM
Ohhh, hello Bernie! It’s certainly
early in the morning to see you
here.

BERNIE
(confidently)
Good morning Mrs. Alexander, is
Beatrice home?

BEATRICE’S MOM
Sure, let me go find her.

Beatrice’s mom walks away from the front door, leaving

Bernie still standing outside. A few moments later,
Beatrice approaches the door.

BEATRICE
Bernie? What are you doing here?

BERNIE
Beatrice, I know you told me twice
that you wouldn’t go to the dance
with me. But hear me out.
(pauses)
I like you, I think you’re a really
cool girl and I’d treat you so well
at the dance. If you were thirsty,
I’d cut the line to get you more
punch. If you were hungry, I’d
run to the 7-Eleven across the
street from school to get you a
Go-Go Taquitos. And if you were

tired, I’d fold out the bleachers
in the gymnasium just for you.
That’s how much I like you and I’d
be honored to take you to the dance.
I’d take my glasses off, fix my hair
a different way or buy new clothes
from JC Penney’s if it’d help to
get you to say yes.

Beatrice is silent for a moment then gently puts her hand

on his shoulder.

BEATRICE
Bernie, you don’t have to do any
of that.

BERNIE
I don’t?

BEATRICE
No, I wouldn’t want to change
anything about you. I like you
just the way you are.

BERNIE
(smiles)
You do?!?

BEATRICE
Yes. What you just did took real
courage. If anything I don’t
deserve to go with you.
(pauses)
But I’d be honored if you took me
to the dance tonight.

BERNIE
(shocked)
You would?

BEATRICE
Yes, I would.

BERNIE
(ecstatically)
Oh boy! I’m so happy!

Bernie gives Beatrice a quick kiss on the cheek which

catches her by surprise, but she manages to smile anyways.

BERNIE
Me and my mom will pick you up at
6 o’clock sharp!

With that he speeds off from her house, seemingly worried

that she might change her mind if he stays around.

BERNIE
Yippie!

Excited, Bernie jumps up and down repeatedly and dances

down the sidewalk all the way back to his house.

LATER ON

INT. – BERNIE’S HOUSE

BATHROOM

There is a montage of Bernie getting ready for the dance:

Bernie is looking at himself in the mirror fixing his hair,

then brushing his teeth, flossing and buttoning up his
shirt.

Next he tries four times to tie a tie but each time he’s
unsuccessful – it’s either too long, too short or doesn’t
even knot.

Before the fourth time, Bernie’s dad walks by the bathroom

and notices that he’s having problems with his tie.

He laughs playfully at his son’s misfortune, then enters

the bathroom and offers a helping hand.

BERNIE’S DAD
Here son, come here, I’ll help
you.

Bernie’s dad ties his tie for him perfectly, he even

straightens it out for him too.

Bernie turns, looks in the mirror and straightens it one

more time to make sure it’s absolutely perfect.

EXT. – BEATRICE’S HOUSE – DAY

Bernie, dressed in a nicely pressed blue suit, rings

Beatrice’s doorbell with his parents, and Andy, in toe
behind him. He’s grinning from ear to ear.

Beatrice’s mom answers the door.

BEATRICE’S MOM
Hello everyone! Well, Bernie,
don’t you just look so handsome!

BERNIE
Thanks Mrs. Alexander.

BEATRICE’S MOM
Come in! Come in!

Bernie’s family enters the house.

INT. – BEATRICE’S HOUSE

LIVING ROOM

Along with Bernie’s family, the room is filled with

Beatrice’s family too – parents, siblings and grandparents.

Beatrice makes her grand entrance into the living room.

Bernie’s eyes grow bigger, if that’s even possible, after
seeing how beautiful she looks.

Her hair is done up nicely and she’s wearing a very pretty,

long purple dress.

BERNIE
(in awe)
You look great!

BEATRICE
(laughs)
Thanks. So do you.

Bernie puts a corsage gently on her wrist.

BERNIE’S MOM
Picture time you two!

BEATRICE’S MOM
Yes, get together by the window
so we can take a ton of pictures.
We have to capture your first
dance, for memory’s sake.

Bernie and Beatrice walk to the side of the room, in front

of a window, and poise for pictures for both sets of
parents.

INT. – BERNIE’S MOM’S CAR

Bernie and Beatrice ride in the backseat of the car as his

mom drives them to the school dance. Both are quiet, just
looking out their windows.

INT. – BERNIE’S JUNIOR HIGH SCHOOL

The two enter the crowded school gym and walk to a corner
of it that’s less crowded.

For the first moments that they’re in the gym, there’s no

music playing and the only noise is the buzz of
conversation from everybody else.

Bernie and Beatrice just stand there awkwardly, not sure

what they should do, or what they should say to each other.

Finally a song comes on but the two just continue to stand

their silently. After a little bit, Bernie breaks the ice.

BERNIE
Would you like to dance?

BEATRICE
Sure.

Bernie and Beatrice begin to dance to the beat. After

several seconds, Beatrice puts her hands on his shoulders
then he puts his hands on her hips and they continue
dancing.

Bernie has a huge smile covering his face as does Beatrice.
