SOLFEGE/NUMBERS PRACTICE
WELL-KNOWN MELODIES

Sing the following with solfege syllables or numbers and without the aid of a
piano. Perform slowly. The idea is to develop an ability to locate and aurally identify
individual scale steps using these familiar melodies. Before singing each note (since you
know aurally what it will be) concentrate its scale step identification. When you leap to a
pitch, focus on its place within the diatonic scale. These melodies are mostly diatonic,
though there are a few chromatic embellishments here and there. Some are quite easy,
other more involved. Do this with other favorite melodies (and feel free to add more to
the list). Later, we'll tackle more chromatic tunes.
