ATTENDANCE

(Normal School Hours - 8:00 – 3:00 Monday through Friday)
Regular attendance is a key factor in student success in school and is the responsibility of the
parent/guardian and the student. Research shows that most students who drop out of school or
fail classes have a history of attendance problems.
Absence Reporting.
When a student is absent from school for any reason, the
parent/guardian should notify the school either by phone (997-9302) by 9:00 a.m. or by written
note. If the school does not receive a parental call, it will be assumed by the school that the
parent/guardian is not aware of the absence. Thus, the parents will subsequently be notified of
the student’s absence by a phone call from the school office.
Absences for Less Than One Day. A student who must go home because of illness must first
be sent by the teacher to the office for clearance. If a student needs to leave school during the
day for a doctor, dentist or other appointment, the parent should notify the school office by
telephone or the student should bring a note from the parent before dismissal.
Calculating full or half-day absenteeism. In order to receive credit for a full day of
attendance a student must attend no less than 6 full class periods. In order to receive credit for
a half day of attendance a student must attend no less than 4 full class periods. If medical
appointments cannot be scheduled outside school hours then every effort should be made to
schedule them at either the beginning or the end (not the middle) of the school day. Exceptions
to this rule may be made by the administration under extenuating circumstances.
Extra-curricular Activities. Students not attending at least four class periods on the day of the
event. (See Athletic Handbook) are ineligible to play in a sports activity (including practices) held
on the day of an absence. Exceptions to this rule may be made by the Administrator/Principal in
extenuating circumstances. Any question on eligibility to participate in an event is determined
solely by the school Administrator/Principal prior to participation
Excused Absences.
Definition- Absences that the school has already predetermined as acceptable and the
student will be afforded the opportunity to make-up missed work without penalty.
Note-If an absence is considered excused, it remains the duty of the STUDENT to find out from
the teacher(s) what assignments have been missed. For an excused absence, a student may
make up classroom assignments, quizzes, or tests.
All pre-scheduled tests (tests that were previously scheduled to be given on the date of the
absence) should be made up at the convenience of the teacher, but no later than two (2) school
days following a student's return. Any test not completed within two (2) days will be counted as
a zero (0).
Examples of Excused Absences.
A. Health appointments- Excused absence contingent upon the student’s return to
school with note. If there is no note from the health professional the absence will be
counted as one of the student’s parent request days.

B. Sickness – Excused absence contingent upon the student’s return to school with
note. If there is no note from the health professional the absence will be counted as
one of the student’s parent request days.
C. Death in the family- Excused absence every time-No note required-Only need
phone call request from
parent.
D. Parent Request Days- Excused absence up to five per semester. These days are
totally at the parent’s discretion. (See above for default parent request days)
E. Senior Days – Each senior is permitted/allowed to have one additional excused
absence per semester without penalty. The thought behind this is to help with
college preview days but the additional excused absence is at the parents/students
discretion-No note required-Only need phone call request from
parent.
F. Special Board Approved Parent Request Days- Excused absence contingent upon
the following:
1-The parent will ask for and complete the Parent Request Form found in the
office at least two weeks prior to the next scheduled board meeting.
2- The completed form will be used to notify administration and will be
deemed by administration as a request to be placed on the next scheduled
board meeting’s agenda as a guest.
3- The parent/guardian will present their request to the board and the board
then reserves the right to approve or deny the request as being an excused
or unexcused absence.
Unexcused Absences.
Definition- Absences that the school has not predetermined as acceptable and the
student will not be afforded the opportunity to make-up missed work without penalty.
Examples
A. Absences that did not follow the guidelines set forth previously to be considered as
excused.
B. Disciplinary Suspension/Expulsion absences.
C. Non-Board Approved Absences of any kind.
Excessive Absences. Any absence above five (5) days in either semester will not be excused
without a physician's statement, notice of hospitalization, and/or meet the guidelines set forth as
Special Board Approved Parent Request Days. A student in violation of this requirement (a
statement or notice) will first be required to meet with the Administrator/Principal to discuss the
consequences of repeated violation of this rule. Thereafter, repeated violation of this rule will
result in a meeting with the student’s parents and, if repeated, with the School Board. Chronic
excessive absences could result in suspension or expulsion.
Chronic Excessive Absences totaling more than 10 consecutive days without written
notification by the parent/guardian will be considered an automatic withdrawal by the student
and an incomplete status will be placed on the final transcript.
* After an absence and upon the student’s return, all written notification(s) provided by health professionals
should be turned in to the office immediately. It should be noted that if the student fails to turn in the
notification (forgot) upon their immediate return, they will be provided one more school day to do so. Any

notifications received after the one day allotted grace period will not be considered and the absence in
question will not be excused.

Agape Christian High School
-Parental Request for Board Approved Excused Absence(s)Policy
Requests for extended time off should be made at least 2 weeks prior to the next
scheduled school board meeting. This time, if approved, will be counted as part of
the 5 days already allowed under the regular parental request day policy (see
Student Handbook). Absences during the last week of each semester are strongly
discouraged. Requests will be honored only as they conform to specific
administrative guidelines and receive board approval. Note: the parent should plan
on attending the next scheduled board meeting as a guest and present their
request before the school board for final approval.
