AutoPIPE Reference Information

Equivalent Tensile Stress - Fully Restrained Axially (CSA-Z662 - 2007)
For those portions of restrained pipelines that are fully restrained axially, the equivalent tensile stress (seq) is calculated per the
code in Section 4.7.1 as the maximum Tresca effective stress (refer to the discussions on Principal Stress and Maximum Shear
Stress in the General Stress Calculations section of the Appendix), excluding bending stresses and shear stresses.

For buried piping systems which develop stresses due to not being fully restrained axially, refer to the discussion of
Equivalent Tensile Stress - Freely Spanning or Above Ground for more information.

AutoPIPE reports seq, and the allowable stress (0.90TSy) under the stress category "Eq. Tens. 1." Results are
output for the operating load condition which produces the smallest margin (i.e. smallest value of (0.90TSy - seq)
at each point.

In order to obtain consistent results for seq, a pressure extension analysis should be performed (enable the pressure
extension analysis option in the Static Load Cases dialog. This type of static analysis insures that the "F/A"
pressure term (see Equation I.14-3), which can be substantial in axially restrained system, is included in the stress
calculation.

The default value for temperature factor T is 1.00. This default can be overridden by specifying the value in the
Result Model Options dialog.

Equivalent Tensile Stress - Freely Spanning or Supported Above Ground (CSA-Z662 - 2007)
For those portions of restrained pipelines that are freely spanning or supported above ground, the total stress (sT) is calculated
per code in section 4.7.2.1 as the maximum effective Tresca effective stress stress (refer to the discussions on Principal Stress
and Maximum Shear Stress in the General Stress Calculations section of the Appendix), including bending stress and shear
stresses.
AutoPIPE reports sT, and the allowable stress (TS ) under the stress category "Eq. Tens. 2."
